Flirt versus Tease

Flirt: Banter and wordplay onboth sides that may or may not be leading anywhere.
Tease: Leading someone down the garden path and promising the world before turning to indifference.

It's a matter of hope.

When you're flirting, there's some hope that it will become more than word play.

When you're teasing, you take away that hope when you're done.

Nothing worse than having your hopes destroyed.

So, flirting HAS to be 2-sided?

If it's going to go anywhere.

(I agree with the others on the distinction between flirt and tease, btw)

Not necessarily, but it's going to be very short-lived if you're getting no response back.

With me it's a matter of intent.

Flirt: You do it because you're interested in where it might lead.
Tease: You have no intentions of following any leads but enjoy watching others follow yours.

Teasing is something that you do to someone.
Flirting is something that you do with someone.

Well said!

To me, the main difference is intent.

When you flirt, there may or may not be any intent for it to go farther than just harmlessly titillating someone. there is no implied promise of sex.

When you tease, you are deliberately arousing someone, allowing them to make assumptions about your avialability and interest, when you know you are going to stop well short of what you are imlying.

Funny, this is the only definition so far that I've agreed with. It all depends on one's definitions, I guess. I'm pretty much the opposite of everyone else here: Flirting can be completely meaningless fun, it doesn't have to be, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't tease unless I have every intention of following through...eventually. ;)

I agree with a lot of the answers here.

Flirting leaves you feeling pleased, appreciated, flattered and hopeful.

Teasing ends with the distruction of hope, leaving you feeling frustrated, angry, and mocked.

That's not teasing--that's foreplay.

I guess this is as close to what I feel it means as anything else I've heard....

Most of my flirting is just good natured fun with a sexual edge....

Tease??? don't think I ever did in a hurtful manner... now teasing to heighten arousal... that's a whole other story....

Just got it!

Flirting is done for the entertainment and fun of both people, whether it's intended to go anywhere or not.
Teasing is done solely for the entertainment of one person, at the expense of the other.

And your point is?

By George, I think you've got it.
