The Krystarian Empire is great for many reasons, but above all else, they are feared and respected for the sheer power the Imperial Sky Ranger Brigade embodies. They were the heroes of the decades-long Goblin Wars, diving out of their airships and unleashing unparalleled magical prowess. The Rangers helped bring an end to the long wars and return stability to the region, with many previously-independent kingdoms rushing to join the Empire. Within a few years, almost the entire continent of Duralma bent the knee to Krystaria, wanting the protection of the Sky Rangers and the massive wealth being a citizen of the Empire brought.
A new golden age ensued, gracing the Empire with a war-free century. Today is the start of the One-Hundredth Unification Ceremony, an annual week-long festival to celebrate the Continental Accords, when the final free kingdom of Duralma joined the Empire. That means today marks exactly one hundred years since the Accords were signed. Everyone assumes the golden age will last forever. With the entire continent united and no other land-masses having any significantly-developed civilizations, who's left to fight? Perhaps someone should have noticed the deep corruption that was silently working its way into the upper ranks of the Imperial government?
Our characters are young students at the Imperial Academy in Krystaria, the capital city of the Empire. All who enroll are able to study Alchemy, Enchantment, Transmutation, and many other types of magical disciplines with no financial obligation whatsoever, so long as they pledge to serve five years in the military upon graduation. The most skilled graduates may even be considered for the Sky Ranger Brigade. And this year, that's us -- we even get invited to celebrate the Unification Ceremony at a Royal Ball being held at the palace. We are able to meet with not only nobles and members of the Imperial Senate, but with the Emperor himself and his grown children -- one son and three daughters.
I will be playing the Prince and one of the students as my main characters, and other writers can play the princesses or other students. Your characters can be from noble families or whatever background for them you desire. The primary conflict comes into play when the Emperor is assassinated at the Ball, along with half the Senate as dozens of shadow warriors smash in through windows. Our characters get drafted into the Rangers ahead of schedule as we rush to get the Prince and Princesses to safety aboard an airship. Once away from the city, Captain Renaldus informs us that there are traitors within the government who are members of a cult known as the Brotherhood of Malsuphur, and they worship an ancient demon who's name their organization bears. Only senators who were members of the cult survived the attack on the palace, and they made sure those elected to refill the seats were all loyal to them.
Renaldus informs us that their plan was to kidnap the Prince and indoctrinate him, and that even the Lord Commander of the Sky Rangers was a cult member. The Captain had been feigning loyalty to the Brotherhood until the night of the attack, after which he sprung into action to rescue the Emperor and his children, though he was only able to save the latter. As long as he keeps all royal heirs out of the cult's hands, they can never have any real, public control over the Empire. Of course, the reformed Senate has now branded us as traitors and charged us with kidnapping and treason, as well as blaming the entire attack on us.
From here there are a lot of ways to play this out. I'm open to ideas
