Flesch-Kincaid grade levels

I've never taken any great notice of the box that comes up after I've finished spell-checking my stories... but I was wondering if someone could tell me what sort of grade level is considered acceptable here?

That depends on the category. Novels & Novellas usually require some College, Celebrity is Senior High School, and Interracial is either Junior High OR 35-year-old redneck.

WE had a long discussion on the subject of writing to a target grade level a month or so ago -- https://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=214439 -- but Literotica doesn't actually have an "acceptable grade level."

In general, you should write to the lowest grade level the material permits -- for Fiction and non-technical material, seventh or eighth grade level is the target most oftenmentioned as ideal.

The readability statistics in MS Word are only a rough guide and you should concentrate on maintaining a readable flow in your writing rather than relying on them as an absolute arbiter of readability.

You can write absolute gibberish that MS Word will rate as grade level one and 100% reading ease, because MS Word is only concerned about average word andsentence lengths and sentence structure.

Hello Pixie, the Weird guy has said it all as usual Write to your own abilities and that of your target audience. Don't try to be posh if you aren't, and don't try to be overly Earthy if it isn't your thing.

If you try to write outside your capabilities, that's up or down, the story will appear as false and forced as it truly is.

You'll find an adoring readership as you post a few more tales here, don't go looking too hard to force it.

I think you've made a great point pop; of all the stories I've written so far... the one I've had the most pleasure writing is one that had more feedback than all the others put together, completely written in my own voice so to speak.
