I've been reading a lot of blogs from people who know their stuff - it's a requirement of the program I'm on. Anyway, I think this guy, Dr. Sharma, really knows his stuff, and here's one of his blogs about motivation:

And for those of you who won't bother to click the linkie, here's some food for thought:

This is why I always discourage my patients from setting weight loss goals and am far more interested in hearing about and seeing what they are actually doing than worrying about any numbers on the scale.

This is why I care more about whether they are actually keeping a food diary, having breakfast, eating out less often, wearing a pedometer and walking additional steps, than I care about how close they are to their “dream weight”.

When behaviours change, health follows!

I do believe I have found my new mantra.

It will be 4 years in August since I joined the gym. Initially I joined to lose a bit of weight and get fit, because I didn't like what I was seeing in the mirror. I wasn't overweight, but I just didn't like the way my tummy looked or the fact that I got tired after only walking a short distance (less than a kilometre).

I've kept it up, because I was seeing results (lost over 6kg) and now I enjoy the social aspects of it as well. I started out doing things by myself and I had a personal trainer once a week, but found that I was more motivated if I went to fitness classes. I do two or three classes a week which I've found is enough to maintain my fitness level and by doing a weights class I am gradually building muscle by increasing my weights on the bar after a few weeks each time.

Regarding diet - I didn't change my eating habits all that much. I go for low fat versions of foods I normally eat and I've cut out most salty snacks. I found I didn't like fast food much anymore, although I do indulge in things like fish and chips occasionally  Once a week max.

My weight is in the healthy range and I can keep up with an hour of boxing class without conking out now! :D
