The mermaid had been human for a few hours now, and her exploration of this strange surface place had been interesting, if lacking in the variety of color and life that she had been accustomed to Now the sun was setting and she felt this strange sensation of cold, as the shreds of net that covered her failed to provide any protection from the elements.
She had seen other humans around, but they failed to impress her. They mostly stood at a distance and stared, several taking pictures with their cell phones, but no one had dared to approach her, to speak to her. A small band had hollered at her, and one deemed himself brave enough to rush her and smack her on the behind, getting her elbow in his face for his effort.
She followed the dirt road barefoot, and craned her neck to the sky to see the stars come out. Another new sight. She stopped and began to stare, wondering if she could count all of those little specks of light.
She was so lost in thought she couldn't see the red and blue flashes of light, but she heard the sound of the horn no problem.
She turned around and was caught in the headlights and searchlight of a police cruiser rolling up to meet her. The patrolman driving stepped out of the car, but stopped dead when he saw the sight of her.
