First snow of the season

It is going to be a white Christmas after all. The Nothwest has been having an unusually warm autumn. Finally, we are getting some much needed snow. Mt. Shasta Ski Park will be able to open next week for the Christmas rush and all those employess, who have been waiting to start work, will be busy.

I know Back East has been having a rough time with ice storms and I hope everyone gets their power back soon. This year's almanac predicted this year's weather almost exactly, so far. The author uses sun spot activity to make his predictions and he is right.

But, for a So Cal girl like me, watching those fluffy flakes float down and blanket the world in whiteness, bringing a sense of quiet like no other, it is wonderful even after 20 years of being here.

Anyone else get a big charge out of snowflakes, snow men and snow ball fights?

I love getting ready to leave the office, turning off the lights as I wait for the PC to shut down, and watching the snow fall out over the parking lot. Then when I walk out to my car, even with the traffic going by slowly on the highway, it is still so serene to stand and listen to the weather around me as I clean my car off.

I love the snow, and I welcome it with open arms.

I love when they are big snowflakes that fall slowly. You know the one that are not wet and kind of fall like tree leafs.

I love in the morning when averything is clean and the noises are muffle.

I love when it's -20c, sunny and the snow makes cruch cruch sounds.

Yes, the big, flat, floaters are the best. They swirl slowly around on the big lot next to mine and look like that scene in Fantasia.

Right now, they are small and falling pretty fast. Piling up nicely, though. We have food, warmth and electricity, so we are all set to watch it fall, bake some cookies and play a little Scrabble.

Our first snow of the season was lovely, with great big snowflakes. It was just enough to make things pretty, but not enough to cause serious damage or make the roads dangerous.

We're supposed to get ice tonight. I could do without ice.

Snowplow just came by and now I could go somewhere if I wanted to, but I don't. It is so beautiful looking out the windows, why go anywhere?

First snow came in November. By now, we have all turned to walking, breathing Michelin ads, and I have to dig out my car whenever I want to go somewhere. You get fined heavily if you drive around with a lot of snow on the roof of your car, because if its freezes into ice and then breaks off, it can hit someone you're passing.

I like the light that the snow creates, a welcome help these dark winter months over here, and the trees look lovely in their winter clothes, but I could do without the cold. I live on the coastside, so we have wet, chilly winds coming in from the sea, making even a moderate cold seem like we've been secretely transported to Siberia over night.

The coldest thing I ever experienced was freezing fog near Eugene, OR. I would rather take anything over that.

But moisture and freezing temp is tough. We built our house in the mountains knowing full well what the winters were like. For that reason, we chose radiant heat using a wood fired furnance. It makes life indoors during the winter very nice and cozy. And that makes all the difference in the world.

Warm floors, warm toilets, warm beds, warm everything.

Yup! It happens only occasionally here. There was a brief flurry of snowflakes yesterday and one today, but nothing much and nothing stuck. Alas.

We got over a foot of snow and more is predicted overnight. I will check in the am and let you know how we did. We had drought conditions before this storm. All or nothing it seems.

The temperature here is going up. On one hand, I think it is going to rain today, and I would rather have warm rain than cold rain. But on the other hand, I would really like to see it snowing instead.

Than again, I would rather it be summer again already

It looks like the North Pole out there! The evergreens are bent over with the weight of this snow, touching the ground in many places. Sometimes it rains and freezes them like this. Cloudy skies right now, but more snow is predicted.

About 18 inches all together in less than 24 hours. Not too bad. We will be shoveling the steps and the driveway in a while. The first deep snow always gets to me. I can't wait to get on my snowsuit and boots to go wander around, usually taking pics, before the work of shoveling begins.

Yeah, snow is magical. One of the many fascinations for those who aren't too busy to enjoy life. I had about half an inch on November 30th, so it confirmed what I've heard: that we'll see more of it this year than usual.

Three hours later, our little workforce of three has made our residence easy to get into and out of with street shoes. We shoveled all the way down to the ground. Easiest way when more snow is expected in the week.

It is the perfect snowball making snow. Light and fluffy, and yet easy to pack into a hard snow ball that stings when it hits the target. Fun stuff.

And we got another inch over the night. So, no more shoveling for today. Hooray!
