I'm writing a story where two middle aged women, already best of friends for many years, find themselves living together and sharing the same man. I thought it would be best if they were bisexual, but earlier stories have established these characters as straight.

Being a man, I'm struggling here. I need help to believably write their first sexual encounter with each other. I don't need them to become hard core lesbians, I just need them to be comfortable with bisexuality.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You're overthinking this, IMO. There are a lot of people who are straight at first but explore homosexuality and bisexuality in middle age. Why aren't your characters such people?

It could be a situation where the women have never seen each other nude before, and find themselves being surprised at the sudden attraction for each other. It's your fantasy, and they can do whatever you want.

If they've been friends for many years, with no interest in each other, I'm never going to buy that they suddenly want one another if they never have before. It just lacks credibility and seems contrived.

Perhaps it's the "shared man" who contrives to bring them together? It seems this is a popular fantasy among men...and then once the girls agree to try it just once to please him and shut him up, etc...;) Nothing you can write now will undo the former "straight" status, you'll have to be satisfied with some mostly believable set-up. But, people do in fact change...especially if it's just "experimenting" with bisexual stuff.

It happens.

"Dwyer Rigby offered some suggestions for therapists with clients who have experienced their first same-sex attraction, and don’t know what to do next. It happened to her when she was about 47, shortly after her mother died. A friendship with a close female friend — a fellow scout leader and mother — suddenly changed. “Our relationship just really just suddenly shifted and it felt much more like a romantic experience,” she says."

"Carren Strock, 66, is in a “redefined marriage” with her husband more than 20 years after falling in love with a female friend and realizing she was a lesbian. "
