First ever UK Member of Parliament in Civil Partnership

Australia has Penny Wong who is a Malaysian born Chinese/Australian woman. She is the Minister for water and climate change and is in the Federal cabinet. (Water is a crucial portfolio in dry Australia). She was a virtual unknown until the last election but so far has shone as one of the Labor government's most competent ministers.

However Oz does not have gay marriage so far although most social/financial impediments have been removed both major parties Labor and Liberals(who are conservatives) are reluctant to pursue it because about 40% of the population is Roman Catholic and some 25% of kids go to schools run by the catholic church.

The RC's here do not hesitate to use the political clout that gives them.

Interestingly when Penny Wong was appointed to federal cabinet it was very favourably reported in China despite the fact that the communist chinese are notorious for their prudity. I think they emphasised her Chinese background though!!

Good News, Mats... even if strangely never headlined on the BBC website :D

I had to do some searching, I honestly believe the BBC has different versions for different countries:D

I still find it awesome that the first male to enter into a Civil Partnership was a Tory. There may be some hope for them yet.

Tories have had overt gays for many years. I remember some gay MPs in the mid 60s. The party managers at that time just insisted that they remained apparently locked in the closet even though everyone knew that the "friend" was more than a friend. They even had "political" wives who went along with the charade for an expensive lifestyle.
