Finnish authorities say they have found around 160 tons of explosives and 69 Patriot surface-to-air missiles on a cargo ship bearing a British flag and ultimately destined for China.

Detective superintendent Timo Virtanen of the National Bureau of Investigation said dock workers found massive amounts of picric acid -- an explosive -- and the Patriot missiles.

They alerted inspectors upon making the discovery.

Officials say they do not know the origin of the missiles, or who was supposed to receive them.

Interior Minister Paivi Rasanen told reporters that the Patriot missiles were listed as "fireworks" in the ship's manifest.

The missiles apparently lacked a transit permit, and have been handed over to the Finnish military.

An investigation has been launched into a possible breach of Finnish export and weapons trading laws.

Picric acid? Who the fuck uses that shit any more? Did they find percussion cap pistols and cutlasses as well? Jesus, they're lucky Finland didn't go the way of Halifax.

I'm sure you're right. I'll have to google stories of people's medicine cabinets blowing up. That stuff is pretty damned unstable.
 
Why Finland?

It's on no route to anywhere.

They might as well have shipped from New York to London via Antarctica.

The Baltic is a cul-de-sac, no through road, dead end street.

Why ship anything intended for China into and out of the Baltic?

It just increases the risk without getting near the destination and even smugglers have some brains.

If they were intended for Russia, then Finland makes some sense.

It really depends where the missiles were loaded. I would hazard that they were transited through the Baltic states. Finland may only have been a staging post to try to confuse the Int agencies.

I still find the quantity puzzling.
 
I've read today that the shipment was from Israel to China...
