Finding an editor

I have started over the last year or so to put some of my work out their for others to read. And the main criticism that I am getting is that I need an editor. I have tried using the find an editor function, and honestly I found it a bit daunting. I was hoping that I could get some advice for finding an editor.

Also any advice to a first timer on ways to build up a good relationship with that editor when, when not if I find them. Well thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Thanks. Looking over the Editors' thread I think I will get my next post ready and then start looking around again.
