This is my newest revision of the FF series. The story will center around Final Fantasy VII in the beginning, but will grow and become more. This will not follow events as the games did -- where’s the fun in that? I have taken the world of FFVII, and flourished it with locales from FFVIII and FFX. This is the continent of Spira, which is actually several landmasses, but being that it sits in the middle of the Anuire Ocean, thousands of miles from any other land, it is considered a single continent. In ages past, Spira was split into several kingdoms, but the Shinra Family, working their way into the high ranking positions of every nation, were able to manipulate events in their favor. Shinra Enterprises was founded in 1921, providing the world with the latest weapons and technology.
In the 1930s, tensions rose among the nations as Shinra Enterprises discovered they could siphon energy from the planet and use it as fuel -- beneath the surface there lied rivers of what appeared to be a greenish translucent liquid. Tests of the liquid proved it had the power to heal and sooth the soul. It also contained a large amount of energy. Shinra dubbed this “Mako Energy”, and built reactors to siphon it, using it as an alternative to oil.
Many people cried out, saying that they were stealing the blood of the planet and of Mother Gaia. But Shinra, having no passion for religion, ignored them, and ultimately, all the governments voted in favor of a Mako-powered world. The Children of Gaia were temporarily silenced, but not stopped.
In 1939, a large rebellion that had been forming underground rose and attacked all of Spira, determined to destroy all the Mako Reactors. Some joined the rebellion, others fought n the side of the governments and Shinra. The result was the Crimson War, named such because the ground was caked in blood and littered with dead bodies as the greatest war to ever rock Spira raged on. Ultimately, however, the rebels were crushed. The war officially ended in 1945, when the Shinra Family successfully gained leadership over the entire continent -- they had provided genetically engineered soldiers to fight in the war, and that, combined with the world’s dependence on Mako, opened their pathway to leadership.
Years passed, and peace resumed, though citizens were wise not to give the new government any reason to arrest them -- all criminals did their time in Blackburn Prison, a horrible place to visit, let alone live. As to mirror that, however, they also built Gold Saucer, a massive recreational resort with five star hotels, restaurants, games, shops, the world’s largest video game arcade, a huge casino, and many other attractions. It was given its name because the entire establishment sits upon a gigantic golden plate, erected into the air by twelve golden poles, which house elevators. Directly under the Saucer lies a massive parking garage, and just beyond it, an Aerodrome for incoming and outgoing airships.
At some point in the late 1980s, Shinra discovered that they could crystallize Mako and the resulting stones could give a human magical abilities. By modifying how, when, and where these orbs were made, they could produce “Materia” in a variety of colors and abilities. Shinra began using Materia and Mako to produce better soldiers than the ones they had used to win the war, and thus created the Elite Guard.
Midgar is the biggest city in Spira, with a population of nearly ten million. It is divided into seven Districts: Quinnhaven, Zernith, Emerald, Amberleigh, Azerael, Zira Heights, and Zangaard Point. Zira Heights is home to the wealthiest families in Midgar, and Zangaard Point is the primary corporate division of the city, home to the headquarters of all major companies, including Shinra Enterprises. In the center of Zangaard Point lie the Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in Spira. North Tower houses the headquarters for Shinra Enterprises, while South Tower acts as the base of operations for government-related operations. Gavin Shinra and his son, Rufus, have offices on the top floors of both buildings.
Each District has a Mako Reactor, and as a result, the land around Midgar has become dull and dried. There are parks within the city, but any grass or trees there have been artificially engineered. My version of Midgar is more like a futuristic New York City, with no plate or anything like in the game. However, there is an area between Quinnhaven and Zernith where there are hundreds of abandoned warehouses and buildings. Although technically part of Quinnhaven, it is commonly referred to as “The Slums.” Because the Slums are beyond what is considered the “Main City”, the government cares little about the residents there. For a small one bedroom apartment in even the poorest neighborhoods in the Main City, the rent is 3000 Gil a month. People are forced to make contacts and get good job opportunities, or they end up having to leave the city. Some are too poor to even buy a bus ticket out of the city, and it is these folks that end up in the Slums.
There are always the Gardens -- Three military academies spread across Spira where troubled youths can go to gain discipline and education. Once a year, recruiters visit the Gardens and talk with the students about opportunities with the Spiran Army or Navy. The Navy has both seaships and airships, and the Army has regular units, and the Elite Guard, my alternate to SOLDIER (hey, if spoken, you can‘t tell if one is talking about a soldier or a SOLDIER, so I felt compelled to change it). The Turks act independently of the military -- they are like the CIA/NSA/DIA of Spira.
While Midgar is the capital of the nation, Junon is the headquarters of the military. All new recruits must pass a series of exams before getting commissioned or enlisting. The results of said exams determine Enlisted or Officer. Ranks are the same as the US Army and Navy, except Crewman instead of Seaman. Airships are created in Rocket Town, and it is also the home of the Space Program.
The Jupiter Mountains are vast and many, and it is impossible to cross them. All who have tried have met certain death. One’s only hope is to find an entrance to a valley or canyon through the Ancient Forest, though very few traverse its deeper regions and live to tell of it. There are rumors that within the Jupiter Mountains lies Cosmo Canyon, the fabled home of Mother Gaia. It is said that the two silver moons, Luna and Nalu, represent Gaia’s twin daughters. It is believed their father and Gaia’s lover is the spirit of the Sun, Solaris.
The huge empty area south of Junon is the Great Plains, I just dun feel like editing the map, lol. In the Great Plains, there are powerful storms and many tornadoes during the warm seasons. Also, I made Costa Del Sol too far north, so let’s pretend it and Gongaga switch places, lol. Costa Del Sol is on the southeastern coast of the middle island, and Gongaga is north, near Nibelheim. Again, dun feel like editing, lol.
So, my idea for this game will take a new version of the story, and take it back a few years. The game will start prior to Sephiroth turning evil, and before Avalanche has been formed. I will be controlling several characters, split up into two parties to start. One party is comprised of a team of Elite Guards -- First Lieutenant Richard Biggs, Major Cloud Strife, Lieutenant Colonel Zack Fair, and their leader, Colonel Senn Sephiroth. The other team is a unit of normal soldiers, led by Brigadier General Barret Wallace. Some of you can make chars to be on his team if you want. Also on his team are twins, Dexter and Jessie Wedge. Between the two of them, they have a collective knowledge of science and engineering that surpasses almost all others.
So, here’s my idea for the start of the story: Barret and his unit run a small military base in Corel Village. One day, they see a cloaked figure committing petty crimes and then vanishes into the mountains. Barret sends a few men after the figure, but they all turn up dead. He sends another group, twice the size, after the figure, but again they are all killed. Following standard protocol, Barret calls HQ and requests Elite Guard assistance. Back in Midgar, Cloud, Zack, Biggs, and Sephiroth (the latter two prefer to be addressed by their surnames) are enjoying some down time in a bar called Seventh Heaven. Earlier that day, Cloud had encountered Tifa Lockhart (played by TearsoftheWorld) and she asked him to come to her bar. The next morning they are sent to assist the problem in Corel. The Elite Guard, accompanied by Barret and some more of his men, including Dex and Jessie, pursue the trail of the figure, and find her on the other side of the mountains, near Nibelheim. Sephiroth delivers the final blow to the woman, who seems intent on killing them. As she dies, her cloak falls back, and she looks into Sephiroth’s eyes, and transfers her thoughts into his mind.
They all stay at an inn in Nibelheim that night, and Sephiroth has nightmares about the thoughts the old lady transferred to him -- they were of pain and torture, but not of himself, or even the lady -- it seemed as if they were visions of the pain the Mako Reactors was causing Mother Gaia. Suddenly determined to stop it, Sephiroth proceeded through the night and decimated the Nibelheim Reactor. When the others discovered this and approached him outside the burning Reactor, he grew apprehensive, as if he was slightly disoriented. He keeps quietly chanting to himself “All Humans must die… They must pay for their crimes against Mother…”
And then he snaps, convinced Mother Gaia wants him to destroy all humans. He nearly destroys Nibelheim, kills many people, and wounds even more, but in the end, Cloud defeats him in battle and sends him flying into the burning Reactor. They think he’s dead, but his body falls through an opening, into the Mako River below.
Shinra covers up the entire incident, and conveniently forgets the surviving characters actually survived-- Cloud, Barret, Biggs, Dex, Jessie, and any chars you guys create. After this, they realize Sephiroth was right, and that Shinra should be stopped. They can then disguise themselves, return to Midgar, and hide out in the basement of Tifa’s bar. They can discuss plans to fight Shinra, and I even have a their behind their name -- “We’ll crash down upon Shinra like an avalanche, encasing them all in icy tombs…”
Maybe after Cloud at the team go to Corel, Tifa decides to visit Nibelheim, and thus, she’s there for the attack? And Aerith (played by Shukaku) could maybe be traveling from city to city selling flowers? Maybe she too was in Nibelheim at the time of the attack? That could explain how they all came together. So, for other chars, you can either be a member of Barret’s team that survived, or someone who was in Nibelheim and decided to join the group.
My bios will be coming tomorrow. Here's the map.
