INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the world of Final Fantasy Zero! The world itself is a fusion between FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX, with features from many other games, such as the other FF games, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross/Trigger, EverQuest, Shining Force, Legend of Zelda, Tekken, Street Fighter, and even Pokémon in some places (don‘t worry, no pocket monsters. However, I like the worlds [Kanto, Johto, Hoenn], and some Pokémon would make great dungeon monsters). There will also be features from Japanese anime series, such as Naruto and InuYasha, as well as some from books like Harry Potter and Dragonlance. The point for all this is to create a vast world with many continents and endless story potential. Though the story centers around FFVII at first, it will grow and cover some of the greatest events of the titles I mentioned above.

THE LAND OF SPIRA

Spira is the land in which our story starts. It sits in the center of the Anuire Ocean, months away from all other lands unless by airship. The continent consists of two large islands and two smaller islands. One of the large islands sits to the east with the other a ways to the west. The two smaller islands sit just beyond it. Even though Spira is essentially one continent, the residents have dubbed the two halves as the Eastern Territories and the Western Territories.

Spira has many cities and kingdoms and many rulers, but none so powerful as the leaders of Midgar. The Shinra Family -- also owners of Spira’s largest industrial company (Shinra Enterprises, Inc.) -- reign supreme over most of the Eastern Territories. They also claimed a few of the northern regions of the Western Territories after their leaders agreed to these terms in exchange for the construction of Mako Reactors (see Lifestream, Mako, & Materia, below) to power their cities.

There are reports on the news from time to time about a special forces group known as Avalanche. They apparently have been interfering with Shinra’s affairs, and although they have good intentions, they are portrayed as terrorists by corporate officials. Avalanche believes that Gavin Shinra, President of Midgar and CEO of Shinra Enterprises, holds many skeletons in his closet. They aren’t too far off from the truth.

Like any powerful kingdom, Midgar has its various armed forces. The Royal Army maintains order on the land, the Royal Navy maintains order over seas, and the Royal Airfleet maintains order in the skies. In addition, they have SOLDIER, an elite force comprised of only the most skilled soldiers from the three departments of armed forces. There are also the Turks, a special operative task force (think CIA, DIA, NSA, etc.).

In addition to the intense political debates between Spira’s leaders, it is also home to the greatest amusement park of all time -- Gold Saucer. Casinos, five star restaurants and hotels, roller coasters that go very fast and upside down, and the world’s largest chocobo (horse-size birds used for travel, looks like a fusion of an ostrich and a duck) race track. It also features a huge arcade with all the latest games.

When Shinra took over the northern regions of the Western Territories, they constructed a city solely for the purpose of developing aircrafts and spacecrafts -- Rocket Town.

For many generations, training for the Royal Armed Forces of Midgar has taken place in the halls of Balamb Garden Military Academy, and upon gaining territory in the west, officials constructed Trabia Garden. Although they have no claim to the realms beyond Gold Saucer, Shinra did agree to build an academy for the Imperial Forces of Deling -- Galbadia Garden.

Other kingdoms have dungeons or jails, but the Midgar Kingdom has Blackburn Prison -- a top security penitentiary where all criminals do their time. This fortress of a prison lies in the middle of the Sunara Desert, where no one can escape without getting lost and dying of thirst or starvation in the enormous desert. Also, to the south lies Venom Valley, a horrible place occupied by giant snakes, spiders, and hornets.

President Gavin Shinra is the ruler with the most territory in Spira, however, there are two others that have multiple kingdoms under their rule: President Laguna Loire of Esthar City and President Vinzer Deling of Deling City. The beast-like barbarians with blue fur reside in Luca Valley, and have their own city within the caves of Mount Gagazet. The Ninja clans reside in Wutai, the Samurai in Kohto. The vast mountains beyond the Ancient Forest hide the location of Cosmo Canyon, the rumored location of a gateway between this world and Eden.

LIFESTREAM, MAKO, & MATERIA

The Lifestream is like the blood of the planet, giving it and all who occupy it energy to live. All things come from it, and all things return to it when they die, only to be recycled into new life.

Mako is Lifestream energy that has been refined into a super-concentrated power fuel. Mako Reactors drill into the Earth and absorb Lifestream energy, filtering out impurities and fueling cities and kingdoms. Shinra Enterprises is responsible for this, and although there is plenty of fuel for all the cities, taking too much from the Lifestream could result in the planet dying, which Avalanche discovered to be true. Shinra has eight reactors to power Midgar alone, it being such a huge city run mostly by technology. Throughout their realms, Shinra has over thirty reactors, all sucking the Earth’s blood dry.

Materia is Mako that has been compressed into a sphere and solidified. These orbs can have magical effects, and can be used to manipulate certain elements and surroundings, and have a variety of different abilities.

Most modern magic is derived from Materia, however all living things have magic in their blood, dubbed Mana. It is the Mana that reacts to the Materia and gives people the ability to cast spells. Materia can be fused with a weapon or item, giving it magical properties. In addition, the spheres can be fused directly with a person, thus absorbing it into their blood stream and giving them the ability to use the effects of that Materia at will.

Normally, one cannot focus their Mana enough to use it without Materia, however, in some cases, Materia is unnecessary. For instance, the Samurai Warriors of Kohto have learned through intense mental and physical training to focus their Mana without Materia, however they refer to this inner energy as Ki. The Ninja of Wutai fuse their Mana with the energy of the spirit, forming a power they call Chakra.

PASSING OF TIME

Time flows a little differently in this world. Each year has 360 days, comprised of twelve 30-day months. The seven days of the week are still the same, and the day is still 24 hours long, but the holidays are different. There are seven holidays total:

New Year's Day, January 1st
Valentine's Day, February 14th
Memorial Day, May 21st (remembering fallen soldiers)
Halloween, October 30th
Thanksgiving, Last Thursday in November (celebrating the feast that was held between West Spira and East Spira 400 years ago)
Yule Day, December 21st (like Christmas)
New Year's Eve, December 30th

Other than that, time is mostly the same. It is currently the year 2000 CA (Coming of the Avatars), and is the beginning of the Third Age (Pre-CA to 0999 was the First Age, 1000 to 1999 was the Second Age, and from 2000 till 2999 is the Third Age, and so forth.

RELIGION

While other lands may have their beliefs, a majority of Spira has temples dedicated to their gods, the Avatars. Many people gather on Sundays to worship Them, although ages ago, no one believed in the Avatars anymore. Then, about 2000 years ago, the Avatars descended from the Garden of Eden and blessed the world with their presence. They healed the sick, fed the hungry, and sheltered the homeless. After the next new year, the world started over their year track with 0001 CA, meaning Coming of the Avatars. Shortly after that, They returned to Eden, and although They have never been seen on Earth since, worshippers claim to feel Their spirits and predict a Second Coming in the future. Some even believe that the Avatars returned to their Plane through a secluded gateway in Cosmo Canyon.

Yevon: He is the Creator of Earth and the supreme lord of the Avatars. Many people worship Him and hold His teachings close to heart. Many people read His scriptures, dubbed the Yevonian Bible. His soulmate is Gaia, and although He created all the Avatars with His blood and modeling clay, He and Gaia did have twins through conception; Alexander and Lucifer.

Gaia: Sometimes refered to as Mother Nature, She has powers over all the Earth's elements, unlike some of the lesser Avatars. It is said that She feels the pain of the Earth, the pain of the Mako Reactors. Her soulmate is Yevon, and she gave birth to her twin sons through normal conception.

Alexander: He was granted power over the Sun once He was mature enough, a gift from Father to Son.

Lucifer: Furious that His brother was the one to become the Sun God, Lucifer commited a horrible sin and killed Alexander's followers, as well as some of the female angels that were flirting with Him. For this, His punishment was to spend 100 Million years in the Netherworld as a Gatekeeper, and He is only halfway through His sentence. He has one son, Mephisto, made from His black blood and the fires of Hell.

Mephisto: Born from fire and His father's black blood, Mephisto was given life. Although He did not commit any crimes, Yevon left Him in the Netherworld with Lucifer, claiming Them both as Fallen Avatars.

Chronus: He was the first Avatar to be created by Yevon, and was given power over Time. He sees the past, present, and future all at once, and is often refered to as the Oracle of Fate. He commands the three factions of angels as he sees fit by his visions -- Angels of Mercy (guardians), Angels of Death (reapers), Angels of Destiny (guides). In addition, he controls a massive hourglass which he speaks of as the Sands of Time.

Karana: Bringer of Storms, She is the Lady of the Skies. She weilds power over the elements of air and wind, and is said to sit atop a magical purple cloud.

Prexus: King of the Seas, He weilds power over water and ice. It is also said that with water comes health and happiness, and that the purest of liquids can be used to heal.

Solusek: Embodyment of the Burning Inferno, He is a master of Fire in all it's forms.

So, there ya go, that's a bit about the world. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. As for characters, you can either use a character already established in one of the games I mentioned above, make their personality and background your own, or you can make your own character from scratch. Either way, I need a character image to go with your sheet in the Character Database (I will post this as a reply). DO NOT post anywhere on this thread until you PM your character to me and I approve it (see my characters in the Database), I will post all characters (I‘ll edit the Database post with each new character). You may post once the chapter one intro has been posted.

Barret Wallace
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Profession: Avalanche, Director of Operations

Weapon(s)
Machine Gun, concealed in Cyborg Arm

Special Ability
Big Shot - Barret shoots a huge fireball from his Cyborg Arm.

Spells
None

Background
Born in the small haven of Corel Village, Barret grew up around a happy environment, where everyone knew everyone else. All was well and good with his life, until that tragic day shortly after he turned 10 -- the day in which his mother died of an unknown illness she had been fighting for two years. Now that his mother was dead, and since his father abandoned them five years before, Barret was forced to grow up fast. Within a few months he had enrolled at Trabia Garden Military Academy.

After turning 16, Barret was accepted into the Royal Army of Midgar, and stationed at Fort Condor. He made his way through the ranks with alarming speed, and was a Colonel at age 28. He had also recently married his loving girlfriend, and before long she was with child. Nine months later, Marlene was born. It seemed his life was finally coming together. It did not turn out that way, though. After discovering some of Shinra's secret operations, and attempting to stop them, he was brought down hard by the Turks and SOLDIER. He was arrested, discharged from the Royal Army after 13 years of service, and spent 18 months (a year and a half) in Blackburn Prison.

After his release, Barret moved his family to Midgar, where they opened up a tavern named 7th Heaven. They enjoyed a peaceful life for a brief period, but tragedy struck again, and Barret’s wife was killed by a masked member of SOLDIER. Apparently, she had witnessed something they did not want revealed. After finding the man standing over his wife’s dead body, Barret attacked him. The masked man had the advantage, and nearly killed Barret. He left a scar on his face and a crippled right arm.

The arm had to be amputated, but a man named Dexter Wedge was able to replace his lost arm with a cybernetic limb. After this, Wedge, along with his sister Jessie and her husband Biggs, joined Barret in a plot to take down Shinra. In the basement of 7th Heaven, they created an underground command center. They set up a computer server network, and thus was born Avalanche.

A few months later, Barret met Cloud, Tifa, and Cid, who had just come from the Western Territories. They formed a stronger Avalanche, and soon Vincent joined the fight against Shinra.

Avalanche has been fighting Shinra for over three years, and although most of their identities are still unknown, most of the world sees them as terrorists.

Race: Human
Profession: Avalanche, Senior Operative/Field Operations

Weapon(s)
Buster Sword, Handgun (concealed in left boot)

Special Ability
Omnislash - Cloud pulverizes his opponents with a flurry of strikes with his sword, causing incredible damage.

Spells/Abilities
Fire3, Ice3, Bolt3, Sense

Background
Although the place of his birth is unknown, he was dropped on the doorstep of an orphanage in the small village of Nibelheim on the day of his birth, supposedly by a woman in a hooded cloak. He grew up around kids that considered him strange, because he was always very distant and never wanted to play with anyone. This led to getting picked on by the kids at the school in Nibelheim, but one young girl always smiled when she saw Cloud -- Tifa Lockhart. They grew up together, and formed a special bond. However, on one fateful day when Cloud was 11, after getting beaten up pretty badly by a group of older kids, he lost control and attacked all four kids with his bare hands, forcing them to run home to their parents, crying. Cloud never again received any trouble from anyone in school or the orphanage, and actually started to become a badass. He took martial arts classes with Tifa and learned to use a sword, and became a sort of anti-hero as he hit his early teens, beating down all those he considered cruel with brutal force.

When he was 14, Cloud said goodbye to Tifa and left Nibelheim, in search of himself. And himself he found, on the streets of Midgar. He saw a flyer that SOLDIER was looking for a few new recruits, and became determined to get accepted. In that same bar, on that same night, he met a young man named Zack Angelus. Zack was already a SOLDIER of three years, and had started when he was Cloud’s age.

With some last minute tips from Zack, Cloud passed his entrance exam, and become a SOLDIER. He even got to spend his six month apprenticeship with Zack, and the two became best friends. He even got to meet the greatest SOLDIER the world had ever seen -- Sephiroth (Cloud found it odd he only had one name instead of a first and a last, but it seemed for some reason he did not desire the name he was given at birth, or his surname, and created his own. Even his ID Card said “Sephiroth”).

Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth spent their off nights at the local tavern, laughing and joking. Life was absolutely wonderful for Cloud by this point, and it stayed that way for quite some time.

When he was 19, Cloud had become a First Class SOLDIER, and after Zack and Sephiroth threw him a massive congratulatory party, they were assigned a mission to investigate a monster attack on the Mako Reactor in Nibelheim. Gavin Shinra suspected a possible sabotage and wanted his SOLDIERs there ASAP.

Upon arriving in Nibelheim, Cloud was delighted to see Tifa still lived in her childhood home, and the two had a short but emotional reunion. Tifa accompanied them to the Reactor, her and Cloud discussing their lives since the day he left.

The events that followed next shocked and scarred Cloud for life: Inside the Reactor, they discovered five goblins who had turned the place into their new den. Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth killed three of them, but the other two fled into the mountains north of town. They gave chase, but the goblins were one step ahead of them until they came to Mount Nibel, where they had been strictly forbidden from entering. However, insisting they needed to kill ALL the goblins, Sephiroth headed through a cave into the mountain, followed by Zack and a reluctant Cloud. In the deepest caves, they discovered a secret library, although all the books were caked in years of dust.

They found the two goblins hiding underneath a fallen bookcase, and quickly disposed of them. However, in the pile of books, Sephiroth noticed one huge hardcover titled THE JENOVA PROJECT -- the name his foster parents had said belonged to his mother. The book told how Jenova was the last surviving Ancient, and she was in cryogenic stasis in the depths of the Nibelheim Reactor. Dr. Kaiba Hojo had injected the yet-to-be-born Sephiroth with Jenova DNA, thus sealing his fate as the perfect SOLDIER.

After discovering his entire life was a science experiement, Sephiroth snapped and rushed back to Nibelheim, burning buildings to the ground in his rage. After killing Tifa's father and knocking her out, Sephiroth reentered the Reactor, and located the cryogenic containment pod labeled JENOVA. He attempted to free his “mother” from her stasis, but was attacked by Zack and his Buster Sword. Sephiroth beat down Zack easily enough, and in the end he sacrificed his sword, his materia, and his life force to Cloud, who became three times as powerful as he had been. Zack lived long enough to witness Cloud destroy Sephiroth, sending his bloody body over the railing and into the bottomless pit below where the Lifestream energy was usually drawn from.

Finally, other SOLDIERs showed up in response to the urgent radio call Zack had made for back up, along with the Turks. Cloud was furious when Pao Tseng stated they would not be taking Zack back to Midgar for a proper burial and planned on covering up the entire annihilation of Nibelheim.

After he continued to complain about Tseng’s plans, Gavin Shinra gave the okay to arrest him and Tifa. They were imprisoned, and although the next few days were a blur, they managed to escape. They figured Costa Del Sol would have many SOLDIERs coming into the docks for the Nibelheim cover-up, so they headed to Rocket Town. After their brush with death, Cloud and Tifa decided to stop fooling themselves and confessed their feelings of love for one another. They met Cid Highwind, and using his plane, the Tiny Bronco, the three flew to Midgar. It wasn’t long before they met Barret Wallace and joined Avalanche, where they have been for three years, fighting Shinra in secret.

In the deepest reaches of her heart, she has always loved him, but refused to admit it to herself until he rescued her from certain death the day Nibelheim was destroyed. They formed a relationship shortly after this. She also took martial arts classes with Cloud, and became a master very quickly. Little is known about Vincent's past. All his teammates really know about him is that he used to be in the Turks, Shinra's private Special Operative group, and that he resigned after an incident he refuses to talk about. The team realizes he has been traumatized by what happened prior to his leaving the Turks, and doesn't press him for details. Regardless, he is extremely skilled with firearms, and makes all of his own guns, as well as the ones the team uses. He also tends to be cold and emotionless, though he does open up to Marlene, Barret‘s daughter. Through Marlene, the team has found out much of what goes on in Vincent's head, though they still have little knowledge of what happened to make him join Avalanche. The only clue they have is a name he shouts in his restless sleep.

Rejen Ronso (played by Raikomaru)
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Race: Ronso
Profession: Avalanche, Operative/ New Recruit

Weapon(s)
Glaive

Special Ability
Steel Storm: Launches into a spinning attack.

Spells
None

Background
Rejen was, like most other Ronso, born on Mt. Gagazet. He was always a calm youth with no real desire to fight, but all that changed. He got into a fight with another Ronso of his age…and lost part of his horn in the attack. Feeling that he could not face others in the state he was in, he created a fake horn for himself using wood.

The other Ronso eventually caught on to his trick when Rejen’s fake horn fell off when he saved another young Ronso from a monster. He was expelled from Mt. Gagazet. Rejen didn’t even look back as he left. He had to grow up quickly in order to survive out in the wild. He retained his mildly pacifistic streak, though, never killing the monsters and other travellers he faced.

Eventually, his journeys led him to Kohto. It seemed that bad luck followed him wherever he went, as one of the resident Samurai tried to pick a fight with him. Realizing that diplomacy wouldn’t work, Rejen accepted the challenge. The samurai lost, and Rejen did not kill him. “It would be a waste of your skill…” was all he said before leaving. However, things did not turn out the way he wanted…

Several weeks later, Rejen had successfully enrolled in one of the many academies, figuring he, too, needed to refine his skill. He quickly became disenchanted with the standard Katana, much to his teacher’s surprise, and opted to start mastering the Glaive instead. Having used a staff all his life, it only seemed logical to him. After some consideration, his teacher relented.

The years passed swiftly, and Rejen eventually became a full-fledged Samurai warrior. His teacher had a prosthetic, steel horn forged for him upon his graduation. The very next day, he set out on a journey to further improve upon his skill. Only along the way did he learn just what was happening to the planet. He felt disgusted at the mere mention of mako refining…

His goal was clear, and he set out once again. He had heard of a band called Avalanche, which were branded as terrorists for bombing Mako refining plants. “Any who would lash out against those who ruin our world cannot be inherently evil…” he thought. His journey eventually took him to Midgar…

(This sketch is a deviation by ~sim0ne)
Name: Delethas Silvarus (Played by Lotharian)
Age: Unknown
Race: Unknown, but with elven features
Profession: Avalanche, Operative/Black Mage

Weapons
An Oaken Staff with a number of holes that material could be placed into.

Special Ability
Greater Magic - Allows Delethas to cast a spell at a grade higher, even if he doesn't have the required materia. (So Fire would become Fira, and Fira would become Firaga. A top grade spell will merely do more damage.)

Spells
Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Slow

Background
Delethas is a Black Mage that as far as the rest of Spira is concerned, appeared from the Black Mages Society located in Bevelle. He appeared there mysteriously some time ago and was found along a beach. He has never spoken to anyone of where he came, but he had a surprising capability of Black Magic and with the training of his fellows, he became very skilled at wielding materia.

Eventually, Delethas headed off on his own as a mercenary as to make a living in Spira and began to hear word of what Shinra was doing. He began to hire himself out solely to anti-Shinra causes. And it was shortly after this time he heard of a group called Avalanche and they told him if he truly wanted to find out what they were about, he’d have to come to the Train Graveyard of Midgar.

The journey from Western Spira into the heart of Eastern Spira was full of perils. After all, tensions between the East and West varied between tense and skirmishes. Using the connections Delethas gained as a mercenary, Delethas able to get to where he needed to with little problem. Though he hoped Avalanche had a plan for getting them past the outskirts....

Marik Prenda (Played by Hojox)
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Profession: Avalanche, Operative/Scout

Weapon(s)
Lion sword (serrated blade)
Falcon sword (Smilar yet not serrated)

Special Ability
Blade Blizzard (high speed flurry)

Spells
None

Background
Raised at sea for the largest portion of his life, Marik has learned many skills and honed his acrobatic skills and sword technique.
Before and after his life at sea he stayed in a small house close to the desert, living off food bought by his bandit father, and water caught by special piping on the roof of his small home. Living without a motherly figure wasn't that large a problem for the boy as he grew, as his father was a good parent despite his actions and professions, this gave the boy great inner stregnth and respect for other warriors and bandit types.
In his travels overseas he often came across many rare treasures, only one of which he seamt to keep close to himself; a small clock-like trinket, allowing him to speed up (or as it seems to him; slow time). But this is only for short periods, and they are limited to his physical energy, overuse will cause him to pass out, as he found out while trying to use it against an Ochu, but it proved too much for him to handle, this iinspired him to train his abilities with these sands and thier strange power.
A long time after his travels he came across a large scrap-heap of a city they called "Midgar". This is where he hooked up with AVALANCHE for reasons unknown to none but himself, yet showing optimism and virtue through the use of his abilities.

Dude, I said I didn't want anyone posting here because I don't want OOC posts inbetween IC posts. You can post small OOC messages at the bottom of your posts, but that's it. You could have PMed me to say yo, lol. I will leave this here for now though, because it bumps the game. I'll bump it as needed, and then delete the bump posts when I am ready to start the game.

EDIT: Scratch that, I can't delete my own posts, lol. I'll just edit them when the time comes. So, since I can't remove them, don't post here again, please. PM me or IM me.

Bump. We have five people so far (including myself) that want to play. As soon as we get one more, gameplay will begin.

EDIT: Also, you may make two characters if you wish.

Just bumping this up one more time. And also, if any of you girls out there would like to play Tifa, Cloud's girlfriend, PM me and let me know. :)

Okay all, I made a map of 7th Heaven using Sims 2. Below is the image, and you can see screenshots of different s things in the building by going here: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sith_master_darth_dragon/my_photos
Go to the album named Final Fantasy Zero 7th Heaven. Also, I made a crappy version of Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Marlene to use in scenes and stuff. They look nothing like the real characters, but oh well, lol. The best way to view it is as a slideshow. Also, the numbers are for the rooms too small to write names. I will add a liost of who has what number once the game starts.

I was wondering why no one was PMing me yet there were so many views of this thread, then it hit me -- maybe they are in the process of making their characters. So, if you read this thread and are interested in playing, PM me as soon as possible to let me know what character you'll be using, or if you'll be creating your own.

Okay all, I plan on adding the starting post tomorrow afternoon. I still need someone to play Tifa, if anyone's interested :).

Chapter One
The Saga Begins

The stars shone bright in the midnight sky, the moonlight bathed the Anuire Ocean with a starry silver. The trees swayed in the cool night breeze, and the sound of waves crashing against the east coast of the Western Territories traveled past the docks and into the nearby streets of Costa Del Sol.

“The sound of the waves is so relaxing, so refreshing,” said Cloud Strife with a sigh, looking to his best friend, Zack Angelus. The two were leaning against the railing of the balcony of their hotel room, looking out at the sea. “Makes me want to just float on air.”

“Oh, bullshit,” said Zack with a laugh, brushing his long black hair out of his face, “you don’t give a fuck about the waves or the ocean. You’re just happy because you got laid last night at your party.”

“Well,” Cloud laughed back, “Can you blame me? That belly dancer was so hot! And she seemed totally content with fucking a First Class SOLDIER!”

“Yeah,” Zack chuckled. “Once again man, congrats on that promotion.”

“Thanks,” he replied, and the two shook hands. Suddenly, a tall man wearing a black trench coat and carrying a long sword -- the Masamune -- walked into the room, his long silver hair hanging around his shoulders.

“Hey guys,” he said with a smile, “I’ve just gotten word that there was some sort of monster attack on the Reactor in Nibelheim. We have orders to investigate at once.”

“Why would monsters attack the Reactor?” wondered Cloud.

“I dunno,” replied Sephiroth, “but hey, this’ll be your first mission as a First Class!”

The three laughed, and departed for Nibelheim at first light.

“Wow, this place brings back memories,” said Cloud with a sigh as their black van passed through the town square in Nibelheim.

“That’s right, you were born and raised here, weren’t you?” asked Zack.

“Raised, yes,” he replied, “but I have no idea where I was born. Apparently, my mother dropped be off at the orphanage here the same day I was born. There is no other town close enough that a woman could walk from in a day after giving birth, but I still don’t know for certain that I was born here.”

“Cheer up,” said Zack with a smile and a pat on the back, “Maybe you’ll see some of your old friends.”

As if he has been predicting the future, they passed the house his old crush, Tifa Lockhart, had lived in. And to his great delight, at that moment, she walked out the front door, a fully grown adult woman. Cloud thought she was as beautiful as ever.

“Seph! Stop for a second, I just saw my old best friend!”

Sephiroth laughed, and turned the van around. They pulled up outside of Tifa’s house, and her eyes grew wide as Cloud stepped out. Tifa ran to him and wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him close.

“You came back!” she cried, tears in her eyes.

“Yep, I did,” he replied, choking back his own tears. “Took me five years, but here I am.”

After the tears subsided, Cloud explained about their current mission, and Tifa agreed accompany them to the Reactor, so she and Cloud could catch up on old times.

“What happened to this place?” said Zack as they walked into the Reactor, which was littered with trash and smelled of rancid meat. Suddenly, five goblins appeared from a hallway, and attacked the group. They fought back, and killed three of the goblins, the other two escaping and fleeing towards the mountains.

“Tifa, stay here!” Cloud told her as they ran after the goblins. “Please, I don’t want you to get hurt!” Reluctantly, she stayed, and the group pursued the goblins to the cavernous entrance to Mount Nibel.

“Dammit, we can’t go any farther,” Cloud cursed.

“Why not?” asked Sephiroth.

“Uh,” Cloud was bewildered, “don’t you remember? A long time ago, Shinra classified the interior of this mountain as forbidden territory. We concluded there must be some top secret project in there, remember? You know as well as I do that trespassing of this magnitude is punishable by death!”

“Of course,” replied Sephiroth, “but President Shinra also told me to dispose of the problem, at all costs. If you do NOT go in there, THAT would be breaking a direct order.”

Quite reluctantly, Cloud followed Zack and Sephiroth into Mount Nibel, and after several minutes of caves and tunnels, they came to a large opening, and inside stood many bookcases and books that were caked with dust.

“It’s a secret library!” gasped Sephiroth.

After a few more minutes, they found the goblins hiding under a fallen bookcase, and disposed of them quickly. They were about to leave when Sephiroth noticed a hardcover in a pile of books titled THE JENOVA PROJECT.

“Jenova…” he murmured. “That was my birth mother’s name…” He opened the book, and Zack and Cloud leaned over to read as well. It was a journal.

September 7th, 1969

I, Professor Gerald J. Gast, have made the greatest scientific discovery in the history of our people. Located in the depths of this very mountain -- Mount Nibel -- I have discovered the body of a beautiful young female, encased in a wall of ice. I have named her Jenova, and prepared a staff to enter the deep ice caves, and we will extract her for examination.

September 9th, 1969

A terrible tragedy occurred during out attempt to awaken Jenova -- she began to shake the entire mountain with supersonic waves she was apparently sending out through her mind. We put to use our recent cryogenics technology, and proceeded to send her back into a deep slumber within a containment pod, which was placed in a new laboratory we build in the deepest chamber of the Nibelheim Mako Reactor.

My only explanation for her incredible power is that she is one of the Ancients, encased in ice as some sort of imprisonment. Thus, I have decided to extract blood samples while she is in her stasis, and continue forward with that method.

June 4th, 1971

I, Dr. Kaiba Hojo, have joined Professor Gast on the Jenova Project. We have injected the DNA of Jenova into the bodies of mice, and they have shown incredible increases in strength and stamina. We will proceed with more advanced procedures.

March 14th, 1972

I, Professor Gerald J. Gast, have not written in this journal for quite some time. I recently had an ordeal with Dr. Hojo, who took the power of life into his own hands. One of the girls in my staff was pregnant, and he injected the unborn child with Jenova DNA… The child was born, and given to a young couple working for us-- Raymond and Diana Sylvan. The child was named Stephen.

March 17th, 1972

I am saddened to say that Dr. Hojo was not arrested for his crime, in fact, President Shrina is encouraging this type of experimentation…

(most of the book was too faded, but the last few entries was readable)

August 17th, 1986

I, Dr. Kaiba Hojo, have finally succeeded Professor Gast. I have been promoted to the new Science Development Director. As for young Stephen, he was successful in passing the test to become a SOLDIER, however, he has abandoned his name of Stephen Sylvan, and taken on the identity of “Sephiroth”.

“Aaarghhh!” screamed Sephiroth, tearing the book apart. “A lie!!! My entire life is based on a lie!!! I’m not a human -- I’m a science experiment!”

“Whoa,” yelled Zack, “Calm down there, Seph!”

Sephiroth seemed to lose his grip on reality, and ran from the room. He rushed back to Nibelheim, and began shooting fireballs in every direction in his rage. By the time Zack and Cloud caught up to him, he had burned down most of the town. Zack quickly called for SOLDIER back-up.

“Sephiroth, no!” Zack and Cloud screamed in unison.

The crazed man zoomed past them, headed for the Reactor, where Jenova was kept. However, a brave man stood in his way, and using his Masamune, stabbed the man through the heart -- Tifa’s father. He dropped down, the sword still in his chest, and Sephiroth continued towards the Reactor. Tifa appeared from under some rubble, and saw her father dying. She held him close.

“Father…” she cried, “I’m so sorry this happened…”

“It’s not your fault… kiddo…” he said with a faint voice. “Take care of yourself, I love you…”

“Father, no!”

His gaze softened, and his eyes stared lifelessly at the evening sky. A drop of blood trickled down his cheek from his mouth, and his entire body went limp.

“NOOOO! FATHER!!!” Tifa screamed, hugging her father’s body close.

“Tifa!” Cloud cried, running up to her.

“He did this….” she said, wiping her tears and pulled the Masamune out of her father’s body. “That monster killed my father!” Screaming wildly, she ran into the Reactor, and attempted to slay Sephiroth. He easily regained his sword, but before he could stab Tifa, Cloud and Zack jumped in front of her. Zack fought Sephiroth with his Buster Sword, and Cloud carried the kicking and screaming Tifa out of the Reactor.

After finally agreeing to stay put, Cloud left Tifa and returned to help Zack, only to find him bloody and bruised.

“Where’s Sephiroth?” he asked Zack.

“He’s looking for Jenova!” Zack replied.

Cloud helped Zack to his feet, and the two followed Sephiroth to the deepest chamber. Inside was a coffin-sized containment pod connected to a massive computer.

“Mother…” Sephiroth whispered.

“No, she’s not!” yelled Zack. “She’s not your mother! Your mother is the woman that raised you!”

“Shut up!” screamed Sephiroth, attacking Zack with his Masamune. The two dueled furiously, but Zack was the one who fell to the floor, with a fatal wound in the chest.

“Zack!” Cloud ran to his side, and Sephiroth returned to thawing his mother.

“Cloud…” Zack whispered. “Take my energy. Take my Materia and my Buster Sword, and get our…. Revenge…”

Zack passed his Materia to Cloud’s body, as well as his life force. Cloud felt the energy surge through his body, and his power tripled. He grabbed the Buster Sword, and attacked Sephiroth.

The fight was intense, and it ended up out in the hall, and then towards the hole in the earth where the Lifestream energy was absorbed. Zack was able to pull himself out into the hall, and lived just long enough to witness Cloud cripple Sephiroth’s arms and legs, and with a final slash from his sword and a fireball blast from his hand, Sephiroth flew over the railing like a rag doll and descended into the bottomless pit of the Lifestream, and vanished. Zack died watching, his eyes open. Cloud walked over and closed them.

When SOLDIER and the Turks finally showed up, Cloud insisted on an airship or helicopter taking Zack back to Midgar to have a proper SOLDIER burial.

“No, I think not,” replied Pao Tseng, the operational leader of the Turks and acting commander of the SOLDIER troops on location. “Zack Angelus and Sephiroth did not die -- they simply vanished. And as soon as we rebuild this city, all proof of this disaster will be gone.”

“What?!” cried Cloud. “You’re going to cover this up?”

“But of course,” laughed Tseng.

After constant debate over this course of action from Cloud, Tseng became fed up and apparently got the okay from President Shinra to arrest him, and Tifa. The following days were a total blur to Cloud, but Tifa seemed to remember clearly being locked in a cage.

Once he got his bearings, Cloud broke free, rescued Tifa, and the two escaped Nibelheim.

~~~Three Years Later~~~
Well, I hope these guys know what they’re getting into… Cloud thought to himself as he watched the Train Graveyard from his secret lookout. They’re about to step into a new life full of danger and adrenaline…
"Astonishing..." was all that Rejen could say as he wandered among the train wrecks. "So much material just going to waste...It's almost they just don't CARE about the environment..." Of course, Rejen himself wasn't exactly pure either int hat regard, but he DID know that, unless this whole Avalanche thing would go on, he wouldn't be staying in Midgar for very long. He eventually arrived at a small clearing, which seemed to resembe the meeting site. He leaned against one of the wrecks and began to wait...
A man walked into the trainyard, as if looking for something. He had short black hair and brown eyes, and was wearing black pants and a black leather jacket. Spotting a Ronso, he walked up to him.
“Hello,” he said with a smile, “I'm Roger Marcus. I assume you're here for the Avalanche recruitment too?”
Rejen quickly noticed this man. "Yes, i am, to be honest..." he said. "If I may...just who might you be?" He had learned to be wary when he entered Midgar..too many ShinRa peons running around...
“Well, if you mean my name, I just told you it was Roger Marcus. If you mean where I come from and why I am here…” he eyed the Ronso. “I’ll keep that information to myself. For all I know, you’re a spy working for Gavin Shinra,”
"Do I look like a spy to you?" Rejen asked. "I've never been to this continent before, much less this city." He crossed his arms. "...and why would I ally myself with someone whose goals sicken me?" He looked Roger in the eyes. "Or do you require some kind of evidence to this...?" He sounded tired...obviously, he's been annoyed about this many times before...
“Perhaps not,” he said with a grin, “but none the less, I’ll keep personal information to myself.”
Rejen shrugged it off. "Do as you will." he said. Afterwards, he merely leaned against a wall, and began to wait, closing his eyes to meditate a bit...he was taught to meditate from ANY position...
The train clacked along the tracks, making it's way through the barren wastes that surrounded the metropolis of Midgar. The car was grimy like most of these things in this industrial nation obsessed with wealth. Delethas had the luck to at least find a car that was for the most part empty. There were a couple of people that were obviously of the lesser classes that kept casting their gaze to him, but who wouldn't?
After all, his dress was extremely bizzare compared to the people of this continent. Delethas dressed in robes with ill-kept hair and a wooden staff was completely bizzare for these people so used to slacks and sweat-shirts. But Delethas didn't seem to cast them a care.
His mind was elsewhere as he stared out into the wastes through his window.
------------
"So what is this place? What was so important for this long trip?" Delethas asked Master Hirdain as they made their way down the stone staircase. The air felt thicker the deeper they went.
Master Hirdain was one of the lead men in the Black Mages Society. The man dressed in a... perculiar manner to say the least. A wide straw steeple hat that hid his features in shadow, a blue overcoat with yellow buttons and red trim, and a green and white pinstripe set of pantaloons. His odd appearance hid a brilliant mind, which Delethas believed was the intention. Hopefully. The man carried himself with pride before his recently acquired pupil in the ways of the Magic of Materia.
"I brought you to these mountains for a reason. Life teams here, for good cause. It is one of the few places that the mako reactors invented by the ShinRa company do not reside." Master Hirdain said in his deep and hollow voice.
"And what does that have to do with anything? I thought you said you brought me here to find out more of materia and of its true powers?" Delethas asked his master, beginning to note what seemed like an almost... green glow coming from the walls of the cavern that had been going down and down into the earth.
"Heh. You shall see soon enough Delethas. You should learn by noooOOOOOOOOOOO
------------------
Delethas was broken out of his reverie from the high-pitched whistle of the train. He then heard over the loudspeaker a calm and obviously digitized voice.
"Arrival at Lower Sector Seven Station in Five Minutes."
All of his time in Bevelle couldn't have prepared him for the sheer impact of this city. It was... massive. Just simply massive! A city of two layers, and obviously rather thought it. It was a sublime combination of logic and artistry if Delethas wasn't disgusted by what had created. There were some prices which were too much for even his type to consider. But then again, that's what drew him in with AVALANCHE now wasn't it?
Delethas cast a quick look at himself in the window to make sure everything seemed authentic before fetching together all his things to get off the train. When they finally arrived, Delethas stepped off when the others getting off his car had departed. As the guard made a look to see if anyone else was getting off the car before giving the train the okay to leave, Delethas took in his surroundings.
The stench and sounds almost overpowered him at first, but he forced it back. These modern cities were always such a... pain to the senses. Too much rush. Too much refuse. Especially here. This place looked like a dump, and from the smell he likely wasn't far off. Chunks were missing here and there from the platform and all that his eyes could see were lower class slumers.
Delethas tapped his staff for a moment in thought before beginning to make his ways towards an area of the trainyard that seemed abandoned. The Train Graveyard he had been directed to meet with AVALANCHE in. Delethas slid between discarded rail-ties and other various refuse of the Midgar Transportation system. His robes only getting caught once or twice and requiring some fine handling to not tear them. And finally, a large blue fellow of some species he had seen in Bevelle (he couldn't quite recall their name. Ronse? Rolso?) and a man.
Delethas looked about with a weary eye for any sign of anything else. He swore he cast the glance of something golden but it must've just been his imagination. He held firm to his stance and stepped out into open view for their judgement if that was their choice. Delethas kept a near vice-like grip on his staff right now, prepared incase he had to weave any of his (limited) choice of spells.
"Are you the ones that I was requested as to meet? Or should I prepare your souls for the here-after?" Delethas said rather sternly while eyeing the two. He wanted to establish that he meant business in either case.
“Whoa, easy there big guy,” said Roger, putting his hands up, “we’re on the same side as you. Don’t worry, we’re all in this together. We all have a common goal to thwart Shinra Enterprises and save the planet.”
Roger looked behind the robed man and jumped as he saw another person standing there that was not there a split second before.
“Roger Marcus, Rejen Ronso, and Delethas Silvarus…” the man said with a serious voice. He was fairly tall with spiky blonde hair and green eyes. He wore a long black trench coat over black pants and a shirt. “I am Cloud Strife, Head of Field Operations with Avalanche.”
“Cloud Strife, did you say?” asked Roger, as if making a mental note.
“I’m actually quite disappointed in Shinra…” said Cloud after a moment, looking at Roger. “They’re not stupid enough to bug you, because they know I’d have a scanner, but it seems they’re not smart enough to send along a good actor…”
“W-wha?” Roger was stuttering, and stumbled over his words. He began to sweat. “I’m not with Shinra! Honest! I jus--” Before he could finish his sentence, his head flew up in the air while his body fell to the ground, blood spurting. The head rolled through the air, the look of horror frozen on Roger’s face, and it landed next to the body with a sickening splat. Cloud slipped his Buster Sword back into the straps on his back.
“A little materia spell called Sense, mother fucker,” Cloud said as he stood over Roger. He looked to the others. “I know neither of you are with Shinra, but if you give me any reason at all not to trust you, if I sense anything that even hints at a threat to our secrecy, I won’t hesitate to subject you to the same fate. Do I make myself clear?”
Delethas didn't even flinch when the massive sword took off the head of Roger. Delethas only sighed. He had known the sword was not destined for him and as a Black Mage you get used to people with a lot of destructive force flaunting it about. Though he was impressed at how easily this man was able to wield such a massive slab of metal. He began to wonder what kind of magical experiments created such a gifted man but shrugged it off.
Now was a time for meeting and establishing a foundation of trust. The time for finding ways to build magical super-soldiers would be later.
"Personally I would have tortured him to find out more of his ranks and any other infiltration going on." Delethas said calmly as he lifted up the head that had rolled its way over to him. "After all, who knows what little tactical secrets could've been in his skull that would help AVALANCHE in the long-run?"
Tossing the head into the pile of junk from whence he came, Delethas cast a bow of his head towards Cloud. "But please excuse my... lack of manner. Even though you know my name allow me to introduce myself to the other. I am Delethas Silvarus of the Black Mage Society."
"So I assume that since you've shown yourself that this is it?"
