In the not-too distant future, Shinra Enterprises has absorbed its greatest rival -- Magitek Industries -- and placed a stranglehold on the entire global economy. A corporate-run world full of computers, advanced satellites and robotics, intellicrops, holographic smartphones and displays, artificial intelligence, flying cars, genetic engineering, and many other major breakthroughs in science and medical research. The President of Shinra is essentially leader of the known world. But it wasn't always that way...

Let's rewind a bit -- say, two hundred years. Back before Midgar became the largest city in the world and the global capital. Back when it was just a small mining camp at the base of the Bhujerba Mountains in western Spira. A time of cowboys and horse-drawn carriages, steam locomotives and bounty hunters. An era in which the world's greatest magical bloodlines had died out centuries prior due to dilution. Well, almost.

Driven by strange dreams, a young man named Laguna Loire travels to Bhujerba, normally considered off-limits due to the high concentration of Ronso barbarian tribes. He is able to win their allegiance and is granted access to the mountains, so long as he stays away from Mount Gagazet. Following his vision, he discovers a collapsed cave entrance, which leads to a massive network of underground tunnels ripe with colorful rocks growing out of the ground and walls. This is what comes to be known as Raw Materia, and is able to allow the wielding of magical abilities.

Returning to his home in Deling City, Galbadia, Laguna recruits a team to help him harvest the Materia and turn it into a profitable business. That team consists of your characters. We build Midgar Camp while naming the caves the "Ridorana Mines." Selling the Materia we mine allows to create our own organization called "Shinra" as our camp turns into a bustling town and eventually, an enormous city.

The story starts as we arrive in Bhujerba, and we'll go from there.
