The Aether is an invisible energy that flows through all living things on Earth, and when one has a particularly high concentration of it in their bodies, they are able to wield magical abilities. While most people are absorbed back into the Aether flow when they die, truly powerful Magi retain complete consciousness after their physical death and ascend to become Espers. According to legend, the Espers dwell in the land of Krystaria, which lies deep within the Aether-rich Feywood. But no living person has ever been able to venture too far into the enchanted forest without suffering Aether Sickness, and so Krystaria has always remained elusive to those who seek to locate it.

In recent centuries, Magi have become quite rare. More common is a form of artificial magic using special crystals known as Magicite to absorb and influence Aether, as well as power airships and other technologies. This process was a product of the great minds at the Imperial Academy's School of Alchemy in Archades, and led to the creation of the Magitek Research Institute. As the primary source of Magitek works, the Archadian Empire gained incredible influence throughout the continents of Ivalice and Eorzea in the decades since the invention of Magicite.

About twelve years prior to the start of our story, Emperor Gramis Solidor of Archadia is grieving at the bedside of his dying wife, Yulia. Despite being the most powerful Magi in the last two centuries and having the world's greatest healers at her disposal, she is unable to fight off the mysterious illness that has befallen her. In the emotional final moments before her death, she reveals to her husband that she has seen Krystaria in a vision, and that she will live on as an Esper, that he should not mourn her passing.

Instead of accepting Yulia's fate and letting her go, Gramis becomes obsessed with finding a way to navigate the Feywood to locate Krystaria and reunite with his beloved there. He is no Magi, but his sons, Vayne and Larsa, have inherited their mother's sensitivity to Aether. Gramis believes the key to finding Krystaria is to trigger another vision, and so he begins his search for all the Magi in the world.

Fast forward to present day, and Gramis has yet to find any Magi who can observe the land of the Espers. His eldest son, Vayne, has inherited this obsession, but not for love or family -- he lusts for power. He is constantly at odds with his father, criticizing his passive tendencies, proclaiming his kindness as weakness. A majority of the Imperial Senate seems to agree with Vayne, and so they mastermind the assassination of Emperor Gramis.

Crowned the new head of the Empire, Vayne enacts a ruthless, iron-fisted, militaristic stance and forcibly abducts Magi who refuse to ally with him of their own free will. He equips them with slave crowns and uses their connection to the Aether to boost his own power in an attempt to receive a vision of Krystaria. He is still unable to see through the veil of Aether in the Feywood, but he does glimpse an incredible power lying dormant somewhere under the mountains to the far north -- the sleeping dragon Jenova, encrusted in a crystal prison. Convinced Jenova can help him access Krystaria, Vayne shifts his focus to freeing the great dragon.

My main character will be a custom version of Cid based partially on his FFXIV appearance. He starts out as a Magitek engineer and pilot who defects from the Empire after the rise of Vayne and helps form the resistance against him. Our characters will form the core of this rebellion, and the story will take us all over the world, to the Lair of Jenova, deep into the Feywood, and ultimately into the heart of Krystaria. This story can go on for quite some time, but ultimately will have an ending. If there is still interest at that time, we can can start sequel threads to continue our adventures.

Please share your character ideas :).

Okay, so I've already got at least two males interested, so for right now I will only accept female writers until we have equal pairings or writers that are willing to play multiple roles.
