shereads is sick, so I'm filling in as poll-poster until she's back. Today's poll will be:

Which of these languages would you most like to learn?

None of the above...

I'd like to improve my French which would be acceptable in pre-revolution Paris but is impossibly archaic; my German which I have started three times only for the classes to die; and my Spanish that I learnt from a cooper (barrel-maker) in Gibraltar.

The cooper's language was typical of a dockyard worker of the time i.e. every other word was *expletive deleted*. I think I knew more swear words than 'proper' nouns. No use for ordering a glass of Sangria.

Japanese is something I've tried and hope to accomplish, love Italian and French. I know some german and polish. then again, sign language would be great to know, how cool to talk with your hands.:D

I know someone in Finland, so I guess I would learn that language out of those choices. I learned enough high school German to get myself in trouble if I ever visit Germany, and I know a few swear words in Chinese, but other than that I'm the typical American.

Personally, I think it would be great to be able to speak any second language. Bit of a Francophile, so I'd go for French.

Italian, that way I could read Dante's La Vita Nouva in it's orginal form.
That's a great goal but you should know that the vernacular Dante wrote was the Florentine dialect of his time. Modern Italian is derived from it, but not exactly the same. E.g., a person who speaks only modern Greek cannot easily read Homer either. There are many translations of Dante though, and reading him in "the original" is well worth it. I can't but I know people who do and, alas, it's just one more thing I don't have time for.

best to you, Perdita
