As a lawyer only three years out of law school, Stephen Koenig, 28, loved nothing more than a good legal fight, in the courtroom, in out-of-court negotiations, wherever. At 6'1", 175 he was a buff, mean fighting machine. As a wrestler in high school and college he had learned that contests, either athletic or legal, with clear rules of the game were really just bare-knuckle fights. You just had to not get caught. And, it really helped to personally dislike your opponent.
His current case was just ripe for such a fight. His client, a 45 year-old man, had started a small, local business with his girlfriend of similar age. The business prospered and was doing very well. The romantic relationship withered and died. Now the two former lovers were suing each other for ownership of the business. There was at least a million dollars at stake, maybe several times that much and nothing was clear. It was just a fight, and one with the underlying emotion that only is born of a failed romance.
Stephen had already done a fair amount of work in studying the situation and preparing a case. The one thing that he hadn't even begun yet was to study the opposition. He had just learned that the opposing attorney was Kimberly Cumstrom. She was a new lawyer in town. Word among the other local lawyers was that she was a vicious fighter. "Excellent, " Stephen thought, " this is just what I am good at. Bring her on!"
