I heard the publisher is assisting her with the writing. Ya think?!

'Fifty Shades of Grey' author E.L. James to publish writing guide

The next book from E L James will be a how-to guide on one of life's most enduring passions: writing.

Vintage Books announced Monday that James has collaborated with the publisher on "Fifty Shades of Grey: Inner Goddess (A Journal)."

It combines professional advice from the million-selling author and lined pages for readers to set down their own ideas, or "inner goddess."

But will readers really want to learn how to write from the author of “Fifty Shades of Grey”?

Sure, James' erotic trilogy has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide, but according to most reviews of the series, James may not exactly be an expert on how to write.

In Aug. 2011, the Tribune Express’ book reviewer, Norman Ansari, had few kind things to say about James’ writing chops.

“’Fifty Shades of Grey’ is poorly written, and that too to a surprising degree. Twice, I stopped reading to check if I had been duped in my purchase or whether I was reading an authentic eBook,” he wrote.

Similarly, The New York Times’ Sunday Review writer wrote back in May that “James writes like a Brontë devoid of talent.”

So will her fans trust the “Fifty Shades” author to teach them how to write? Apparently Vintage-- who also published James’ other novels-- thinks so.

Vintage says the journal will have a soft leather cover, "bonded." The "Inner Goddess" journal will be published May 1.

It would be good if she could write. Some of her writing is so clunky. I guess that's what happens when it's marketed on media hype rather than merits and you want to get them all out together before the furor dies down.

Are you sure The Onion didn't dupe Fox News again?

there will be enough that buy it who think it'll show them:

a) how to make big money fast - and be disappointed
b) mistakenly think it's more weak-sleaze - and be disappointed

either way, it's a shrewd marketing move that will milk the last drops from this particular cash-cow before it's consigned to the knacker's yard. imesho, naturally.

:) i had heard, but found it unbelievable. it is wrong. oh so wrong. still, it'll make money - and make me appreciate the harry potter franchise even more deeply than i do.

indeed - scary, init?

It is scary. All I keep thinking about is her bad Twilight fan fiction.

It's weird. Some people say 50 shades is good. Others say it's crap.

I'm almost tempted to read it, if only to satisfy my own curiosities.

Nah. :)

it's always best to judge for yourself, but if everyone whose taste you share/judgement you trust tells you it's badly written, it's a good bet you'll share that opinion. borrow a copy and maybe read a chapter or two - you never know!

I may do just that, chupa chup.

I've just picked up A visit from the goon squad. So far, so good.

Somehow I doubt the steps will be:

1) Write a Twilight fanfiction because you're guaranteed a huge readership.
2) Make it steamy, because wow, did Twilight leave its readers tied up with tons of unresolved sexual tension!!
3) Slowly phase it out of the Twilight thing before it's finished so that the readership, now hooked, will follow, and promote the hell out of it for you.

Yes, it's confession time. I actually did read some Twilight fanfiction- surprisingly, there are some ferociously good writers inhabiting that weird world... but E.L. James wasn't what I'd call one of them. I saw 50 Shades on twlighted.net when it was born as the fic called Master of the Universe, and read about three chapters before closing the tab. It just wasn't very well-written.

Fracking in Forks,
Ellie
