Logically speaking, whatever outcome you get is the meaning of whatever it was you did to get the outcome. I'm reading a new book about decisions making. People cannot possibly process all the information flooding their senses from one moment to the next, so we sample the stream every milli-second or so, and when we get enough data it triggers a feeling (mad sad glad afraid) and we act.

In psychotherapy what you do is cut the link between, say, glad and self-mutilation or maybe shooting yourself or getting drunk. You wanna wire glad to another outcome...like call a close friend or fix a banana-split or have a good cry.
