In the House of Lords (London, England) 18/7/03 Chief Justice Leming ruled that while tastes in pronographic (sic) literature would be abominable to the majority of right thinking people, in specific cases brought before the house only judgemental evidence was de facto pro hac vice.

He further added "There is no justice. Just us."

Lord Justice Monty Python for the people responded; " I think that all right thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary decent people are fed up, in this country, with being sick and tired. I know I'm certainly not and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am."

The point of this thread (despite the inherent silliness) is the "No justice, just us." line.

It's from one of the Discworld sagas and is spoken by Death.

Poignancy in humour. Discuss.

The awful truth is that Mr. Death is correct. The law must deal in language and cold logic coupled with myriad interpretation and process; there is little room for the human element even when children’s lives or souls are at stake. I served on a criminal court jury and was forced, by law, to render an injustice. A friend blithely asked when I returned to work, “So, was justice served?” I answered coldly, “No.” I could not begin to explain why. BTW, my fellow jurors felt the same as I.

“There is a point at which even justice does injury.” (Sophocles; Elektra)

So, it seems to me in art one must needs turn to humor, poignant or ridiculous, often. In the circumstance above it was impossible.

I will try to find examples of humor anon.

Dear Gauchie,
Terry Pratchett gives Death some great lines in those novels. You always know when Death is speaking, because everything he says is capitalized. I also love Death's pale horse being named "Binky." That's so ... Pratchettesque.

Poignancy in Humour: Discuss (With examples)

Well, Gauche,

I'm not sure I can give much humor. I went yesterday for the final rulings of a breach of contract case I filed against a former employer.

As Perdita pointed out, thanks to the narrow interpretation of the law, no justice, IMHO, was served. But perhaps the Karma of which Destinie so recently spoke will avenge.

here's hoping,
in the meantime, I will look for the humor

Quick response, don't know the significance off hand (though I am sure there're a few Shakespeare refs.) but it strikes me as such that Love and Justice are both depicted as blind.

Perdita

Perdita et al,

Perhaps not blind but blinkered. Justice can only see in one direction, the strict interpretation. Love sees just what is in front, until another slides into view.

I think Mexicans have great poignancy in humor when it comes to death. Many of you saw that in my October AVs. Here's something poignantly witty to someone descended from migrant farmworkers.

Quasi,

I'm not sure it's politically correct to have posted that picture. I mean, shouldn't the person be smiling?
And, has that dog got a micro chip in its ear or just a flea?
