Want to correspond as a fictional character? Me too. Send a PM if interested.

I am a fictional character.

So are my alts, Jeanne D'Artois and Fag-Ash Lil who is a character in one of Jeanne's stories.

What is different about corresponding as a fictional character...?

I'm curious--how's this supposed to work?

I write letters pretending I'm somebody else. I exchange letters with others who are interested in doing the same. If you're interested, send a pm.

This is a little bit different from roleplay, isn't it? It strikes me as having some literary potential.

What kinds of somebody elses have you pretended to be?
:)
(no apostrophe in the plural of "somebody else", I think;) )

Let me see if I understand this...

I write you a letter as Emperor Ming of the planet Mongo threatening Earth with destruction...and you write me back as Flash Gordon threatening to crush my evil plans...what happens next?

*wanders off muttering*

I know a good lawyer to get you out of that. I'm sure you didn't mean it as a real threat. ;)

Sheesh...Emperor of a planet and I need a lawyer? What a lousy future this turned out to be.

You got his cell number?

no, I was thinking more like; You write to me as Emperor Ming of Mongo, and I write to you as Dorothy, describing her home in Oz.

or, vicey versey, or something.

Hmmm...I can relate to that..."Letters and Transcripts"cat possibly...do I hear a chain clanking? ;)

I've corresponded with a person pretending to be part of the gliteratti; with a person pretending to be from another planet; with a person pretending to be a car (this one is my favorite, I write back as a thunderstorm); with a person pretending to be newly eighteen and in high school (I had to nix this one as it turns out she really was eighteen, and, even though technically legal I suppose, was still a bit too weird for me. The advantage of this one is that I wrote back as a sixteen year old girl, which was a challenging exercise for me).

I had been thinking it would be something like when you had pen pals in school. It's not really necessary for a story to emerge, but stories kind of do anyway. It's more of an exercise in characterization. It's basically an extension of the unsent letter exercise that's out there floating around the how-to write books and classes. Kind of like being an actor in a play, also, but a play with no audience.

It is a bit like that category. Though, like I said, story doesn't necessarily have to emerge. Since it's a private correspondance between two people there's no strong imperative to be entertaining to an audience, but it's kind of cool when a challenging email arrives. For me the most challenging have been the car and the eighteen year old girl (I'm really kind of bummed I had to quit that one)

This is great, Og, I've been working on introducing a character in another chat forum. It's funny that I still feel shy posting on anonymous forums as myself. Am I behind the times here? Is everybody already being a character?

A car talking to a thunderstorm. truly awesome!

...Is everybody already being a character?
yes and no... On this forum, you'll probably find more people revealing a persona closer to their real one than you would elsewhere, but-- I think many of us sort of pick and choose which parts of ourselves we show...

To some extent being a character is part of being human.

Think how you behave and speak when talking to:

Your SO
Your parents
Your grandparents
The Police
A minister
A close friend
An office colleague you hate
An office colleague you like
A manager you respect
A manager you think is an ass-licking piece of shit...

etc.

You adapt your speech and behaviour for each role - so you are always playing a part. Some come naturally. Some are more difficult to assume.

It is the same here. I'm not really a long-dead biblical king who dresses up as King Henry VIII. I'm really someone who does dress up as King Henry VIII, not because I have an inate desire to be Henry VIII but because a friend needed someone to take that part and I was the right build.

I write stories for this site. My original audience was members of Yahoo Adult Groups that specialise in particular fetishes. I started to write erotica because I read what was available on the groups and thought "I can do better than that". It has coloured my writing. What I write doesn't necessarily represent my own sexual preferences or desires but fits with what the target audience wanted. That's why I think it would be difficult to find a single individual who likes ALL my stories. They are aimed at a range of specialist audiences (and many have limited appeal beyond their target). SO -I'm writing, not as me, nor to please me except in the sense of achieving an aim, but as an apparent purveyor of specialist fetish stories. That too is role play.

To sum up - most of us here are already playing parts as members of the Authors' Hangout. We may reveal more of ourselves here than elsewhere but we are still not our normal selves.

I like this. I think that's very well put. Now if I could only I could work this as a theme in a story without the character seeming inconsistent.

I was reading this thread and thinking "chain story"... ooh, ooh, can we, can we?

If you all want to, go ahead. I just want to write letters. :)
