Female Copulatory Vocalizations

So apparently this is a real thing. Scientists have discovered that female primates (including female humans) make distinctive noises while they’re having sex. They’re called Female Copulatory Vocalizations. Each species has its own unique sound. For humans it’s that “unh unh unh” noise that women sometimes make when they’re having sex and they’re really turned on. Males make noises too, but they’re not as loud or predictable. So primatologists have been trying to figure out what evolutionary purpose these noises serve. And after a whole bunch of experiments with monkeys, they’ve discovered some interesting things:

• It’s tied to male orgasm – females make more noise when the male is about to ejaculate.

• It’s tied to male desirability – females make more noise when they’re with a high-status male.

• It’s tied to having an audience – females make more noise when there are others around to hear.

The theory is that female primates make these sounds to advertise that they’re fucking a high-status male. This both encourages other males to come and take a turn, and it demonstrates their superiority over the other females. Essentially, it’s the monkey equivalent of “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they’re like, it’s better than yours ….”

So … okay … learning this is REALLY WEIRD. Because I make those “unh unh unh” noises when I’m having sex and it never occurred to me that they might MEAN something. It never occurred to me that they might mean “Hey, horny girl over here! Come watch while I fuck this hot guy! Don’t you wish he was fucking you instead of me? Who wants to go next?”

Apparently I’m genetically programmed to crave public gangbangs. Or at least make sounds like I do ….

A cynic would say

Ha, thanks for the interesting read. I suppose if you think about it, it makes plenty of sense. I speculate that is why women make those fake sounds in porn, too, as it has some innate appeal to men.

Personally I don't make anyou noise unconciously. Maybe I'm broken, maybe I just don't get fucked hard enough. But I know that if I've grow dull of the act and would rather find something else more interesting to occupy my time, all I need to do is make a stangled little whimper and the deed is done. Oddly enough, the same noise will instantly provoke a hard on too.

Is there a noise human men make designed to attract women? I think we're the odd species out in that women go through the effort of primping for attention, as opposed to men being more overtly beautiful (think peacocks).

A male flexing his credit card is a turn on.
On a serious note, there are so many different triggers that it would be difficult to tie it down.
Noises, displays of peacock, probably a smile and sincere twinkle of the eye is best.

The theory is that during sex men tend to be quieter because they don't want to attract attention to what's going on. They want to keep her all to themselves. While women are like "Hey, come check out what we're doing!"

Am I the only one who finds this really arousing for some reason?

Interesting. I suppose, at that point, the man is getting what he wants, so the chest-beating bravado stuff isn't needed anymore. He's just trying to complete the act.

Or maybe the male primate isn't as vocal because he's thinking about his secretary at the time.

:D

I wonder if the primatologists considered that perhaps we make noises because it feels so damn good?

As the receiver, the female probably goes 'uhh' when the male bottoms out. I'd guess the 'uhh-uhh-uhh' frequency matches the same frequency of the male's thrusts. She may be making the noises to let her partner know she's enjoying it?

Another thing to think about is, does the male hold his breath while he's ejaculating? I know I do. It's difficult to make any vocalizations while you're holding your breath. :)

That's my two-cents worth.

This reminded me of a college memory or two. One year five roommates and I shared a suite with six bedrooms and a shared living room and bath. There were many times when one or more of us had a girlfriend spend the night. Unbeknownst to one of my roommates, the other five of us called his girlfriend “Mimi the screamer.” She could be heard easily from the most distant bedroom in the throes of her ramp to climax. She and my roommate were also loud when they had a fight. On a couple of occasions, I debated barging into their room because I was unsure if they were screwing or he was trying to strangle her (Love always triumphed over war.)
While Mimi was the champion copulatory vocalist, I overheard many other women during those years of dorm life and shared rental houses during the summer. It was arousing to hear them and I recall the next day, I would feel a heightened physical attraction for many of those women. Just recalling how out-of-control and turned on they sounded made them seem more sexual.

Fascinating how some very basic responses we share with other primates have morphed into having more profound meanings and purposes. For me as a husband there is no satisfaction that comes anywhere close to the satisfaction I have in my wife's orgasmic bliss, and that has so much to do with her vocalising it so supremely.

What I want to know is what sounds female primates, especially humans, make when they want to copulate, but aren't with a partner yet.

Wow, bright, shiny, and programmed to crave gangbangs ...these are all things that male primates can't resist. Got a feeling you're very popular.

The amount of traits that humans exhibit that are still animalistic by nature is so incredibly fascinating. I wonder if males do this too as a sign of "Im the Alpha. Im having sex. Everybody look."

Noises off

This is all very interesting and thanks for sharing, BSG!

What are we men saying, then, with our noise or lack thereof, to other primates, so to speak? I can be a bit loud when I cum, depending on circumstance. Am I passing along the same message to other guys, like "look who I am fucking." And is that an invitation to share, re gangbangwise?

Although I do like being watched, so there is that.

You're going to have to record your copulary vocalizations to have them properly analyzed here. It's for SCIENCE! ;)

I record the occasional audio, but absolutely can't stand to listen to them. Maybe I'm broken as well, when I'm getting close I have this completely subconcious growl that gets louder & louder. I don't mean to, and the first time I had it played back to me I get very self concious about it now....but apparently I just can't help myself.

So maybe I'm broken as well...or I like swapping & gangbangs?

BSG, your comments and threads are always so fascinating!

I also make a lot of noise when I make love, and I've noticed that I also seem to have a pattern of sounds, especially when I cum. But, speaking for myself, whatever the evolutionary motivation for it, what I experience in the moment is that I do it because it makes the sex feel better. As I've stated before, I'm hugely aural and love the sounds of people making love, especially men. The noises inflame my desire and intensify the pleasure.

Science!

This is so going to be going through my mind next time I'm having sex.

So I'm quiet because I don't want someone else coming along to fuck my partner... But I want that to happen... So I should make noise?

This is one of the reasons I hate porn.

Having heard and been the cause of many female orgasms, the fake "oh oh oh oh-ing" of women in porn rings so hollow for me that it is a complete turn off.

Involintary actions

Not to be out done by our noises, but did you ever notice that you clench you toes when you cum? I noticed this years ago watching couples making love. Funny the things you notice at a time like that.

Interesting. I don't know why other primate females would behave that way- I think at least the great ape females do not tend to come into estrous at the same time. But for us- it's well known we will tend to menstruate in synchrony, so showing off that way might be a way of demonstrating superiority over other women.

It may be a cultural thing, but in my promiscuous days, I never objected to guys watching me have sex. In fact, it was a bit of a turn on. But I did not want other women to watch, particularly if they were not participating.

Word. It's one of the big reasons that I can't watch most porn, right behind actors with no chemistry and positions that I know can't possibly feel good. There is the occasional pro or semi-pro clip where it's obvious from the "copulatory vocalizations" that the actors are clearly enjoying themselves and each other's bodies. It's much easier to find really hot armature clips where the camera angle sucks, but the lovers have a sixth sense about how to tease and coax delicious moans and vocalizations from each other. Those are the ones that get my attention.

I have never been in a group situation, much less seen a woman "in real life" have sex with higher status males when I was in earshot. I used to do a lot of travelling for work and would occasionally hear couples fucking in the room next door. Sometimes I think that the women were just being loud on purpose. Other times I could tell that they were unsuccessfully trying to be quiet. I can only recall two times when the auditory evidence of their lovemaking sounded natural and inhibited, and those weren't as loud as the times when I think the women were trying to be porn stars. Just my opinion, of course. For all I know the kind of relationship they had with their lover made a difference, or they all just really enjoyed a good fuck and my personal bias colored my perception.

While I don't have a lot of notches in my bedpost, in my experience there are many variations of this that are unique to each woman, and each is simply sublime. Each woman that has shared herself with me made different noises depending on what we were doing. I tend to spend a lot of time savoring the taste of a lover while she relaxes. Her breathing and moans change as she becomes more excited and gets closer to orgasm, and feeling and seeing her body move in rhythm with her sounds and breathing is like auditory heroin. Each lover had her own unique sound whether she's cumming from her fingers, my fingers, or my mouth. It is thrilling because it ebbs and flows with the delicious tension radiating from her body. I adore watching and listening to a woman masturbate, but knowing that I'm the one making her breath ragged and marbled changes everything.

My wife tends to make that “unh unh unh” noise mostly when we fuck. Her breathing isn't in time with my thrusts, and I'll often thrust myself deeply into her when she's in the middle of a breath. Each smokey "unh" is laced with wisps of her pleasure that betrays how much she's enjoying the moments when our bodies collide and become one. When I was younger the thrill of hearing that sound as a lover got closer to orgasm would often push me over the edge too soon. I always thought that nature was a bitch :). Why make the sounds of love making so exquisite and exciting when it brings things to a climax too soon? Maybe that really is the evolutionary purpose, to get the act over with before some prehistoric animal makes a meal of a distracted male. As I've matured I've learned to savor each grunt and rasp of breath I coax from her, and love listening to her cum as I eagerly await my turn but it's not always easy.

Great topic, by the way (even if I do ramble).

And here I though the “unh unh unh” noises, especially when they get more rapid and louder, was the signal for the male that he could stop holding back and increase his pace and do his "genetic duty" :)

Great post, beautifully descriptive of your enjoyment of the sounds of female pleasure.

For myself, I think it's an involuntary thing - I don't always know what noises I'm making, especially near or during orgasm. Sometimes I hear sounds as if they are from someone else or in another room, and then when I 'come to' I realise that actually it was me!

As well as a source of aural pleasure, I think it's also a really good source of feedback for a skilled lover, as to what's working well, and what's working really well ;)
