I also find myself staring at or checking out girls' butts, to me it is a beauty thing - I think girls are generally much better looking than guys. (If it matters, I prefer to be with guys, they're better in other ways. Or maybe it's a sign that i'm not as straight as it seems).

So I don't think it's a guy thing as much as a grrl thing!

I think its a genetic thing???? I saw a show on TLC about attraction and it said something to the effect about how hips attrack mens attention. i.e. healthy hips and butts mean a good baby producer or something???

It's actually quite elementary biology. A woman with wide hips provides a larger area for a child to grow in while it's still in the womb. If living space is larger, then the child will generally be larger and healthier than a child born to a woman with slender hips (and therefore a smaller womb). It's similar to why men generally find large breasts more appealing than small breasts (though I personally prefer the latter).

Why do we have cleavage? A woman can breast feed with flat tits just like a guys. The milk glands dont have to be in the actual tit. So why do women have them? Here is the theory. Cleavage looks like a butt crack. Its a way to display your sexuality up front. Again it goes back to the idea that we are meant to have sex doggy style. Its like advertising. that would be the biological imperative for why the attraction is there but you have not explained the cause of the attraction. If you understand the distinction i'm making.

I dare say most men have never looked at a woman's ass and said "Check out those birthing hips, i've gotta get me some of that." So can anyone explain what generates the attraction, instead of giving the reason it's there? I'd love to know.

I guess its the same reason why ladies like the "star" of the football team and not the kicker. Or they like the lead singer of the band and not drummer. Women are attracted to status symbols. In the animal kingdom that was the leader of the pack. the one who would give you the best genes for you kids.

Basically its instinct. No guys dont think those are good birthing hips. But deep down in side we like curves because its healthy. I find guys who only like pencil thin girls abnormal. Under survival conditions a really skinny girl would die. We developed the instinct to pick out the ones who would survive. And thats those bodacious bodies we guys like.

Instincts are caused by something called genetic meomory. I can't really explain it too well without totally highjacking the thread, but a search should turn up a few pages.

The really really short explanation is this: every creature has a natural behavior pattern, which is generally affected by it's genetic makeup. Certain patterns are more successful than others, so naturally those with successful patterns survived, while the others died.

Not sure how helpful that is, but you can't fault me for not trying.

Congratulations, you guys sorted this out pretty well.

Biologically speaking, males are programmed for youth, health, fertility, & variety. Selecting for those qualities gives them the greatest chance of their chromosomes surviving via offspring that survive long enough to reproduce.


youth- not only are younger women more fertile, but may be immune to the latest disease - evolved another generation, as it were.

health- good skin & hair, are symptoms of lack of disease & nutritional deficiency. Body symetry, especially facial , is one indicator of a lack of genetic defects.As our idea of how healthy fat is changes, so does our ideas of what a woman should look like.

Fertility- Broad hips, developed nipples, & plump asses, because it takes a lot of stored fat to build & nurse a baby.

Variety- because the more genetic combinations you try, the more likely one will be superior.

Oh- another theory on butts is that they draw attention to the genital area.
