Emotionally mature, realistically imagined, stakes you cared about, epic in every scene, even the small ones, and mythologically resonant. The picture had heft and heart, where "Phantom" was a blueprint of a good idea.

Why oh why did Lucas assign himself to direct "Clones"?

I saw "Lord of the Rings" two days ago, and I'm looking forward to a repeat showing this weekend. Not for geeks. It's too good for geeks. See it.

what's wrong with us geeks?

I seen it loved it gonna see it again and again and again :D

i agree with you completely dcl ... it took the heart of the book and kept the ideals of the book in that the book was meant to be a real history/myth of england ... not just a legend or a story but real and it put that all on screen

every actor was amazing however big/small their parts were ... it was maybe the best film i've ever seen with the realism that it wasnt afraid to do ... and the seriousness that it wasnt afraid to show for a fantasy movie i thought that was amazing and was exactly what i was hoping after reading all the books

phantom was a kids movie ... fellowship of the ring was a great epic story

I've not seen it yet but everyone I know who has say's it's great and worth every penny spent to make it.

DCL I still haven't seen it yet. For curiousity's sake can you tell me what you thought of the New Zealand setting? Were you impressed by what you saw of my country? From the snippets I have seen the special effects are amazing and am looking forward to seeing it.

I, too, saw it two days ago and was left spellbound. Having read the books about a hundred times or more, I was hesitant to think the film would capture the true essence of the book. I was wildly surprised and intend to see it again and again.

I am a huge Star Wars fan, but I agree, DCL, Phantom lacked heart and message. LOTR was just spectacular.

Cassidy,
who is leaving husband to marry Aragon:)

I agree LOTR is one hell of a movie...I never see movies a second time at the theatre and Im actually considering it.

Did you see any flaws....the only thing I think they could have improved on was the Balrog. I think they could have made it more menacing instead of going for the gold with special effects on it.

I also saw beautiful mind. It was excellent. Not quite as good as LOTR but close. They are very different movies though

I agree that "Fellowship" was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen it twice, and, plan on seeing it about 100 times. Ok, maybe not. "Phantom" was ok, in that, it was a Star Wars movie. I've heard that Ep. 2 is alot like "Empire." So, I'm REALLY looking forward to it. seeing how "Empire" is one of my fav. action movies.

Phantom is the way that it is because Lucas lied and claimed to have written it a long time before he actually did. He also had to rely on a kid actor, we know how marvellous those are. Still... he can still do a Lightsaber scene. Just hope he doesn't kill off the coolest character in the movie again.

Haven't seen Rings.

Breathtaking. It looks newborn.

American television is full of shots of Los Angeles, New York, and Vasquez rocks, but, really, there are thousands of miles of unspoiled and spectacular landscape here, too, from the deserts to the Rockies to the Catskills and more. I've yet to see anyone but John Ford really use the American landscape in any real mythic sense, which is odd, because it truly lends itself to epic and vista.

New Zealand looked gorgeous. It always does, come to think of it.

Unless you're watching "Once Were Warriors"! ;)

Saw the movie...

I saw Fellowship of the Ring last SAturday, and may see it tomorrow. I too, have never seen a movie the theaters twice, but bank that I'll see this one again. Truthfully, it may very well be THE BEST film I've ever seen, in how it was made and the strength of the story as well.
Clearly, the strongest character was Stryder (Aragorn), and Viggo Mortensen did an amazing job with it. As far as Phantom goes, why make the comparison? THey're two VERY different movies and concepts altogether, and no original idea (Phantom) can compare with the years of imagination and following that Fellowship and Tolkien have created.
Who agrees that the RingWraiths, not to mention Arwin (Liv Tyler) had amazing prescence, regardless of the fact that they were in such short sequences of the movie? What do you think? Viggo for best supporting actor?

For my money, the sequences in Moria were incredible! I personally thought the Balrog was superb - the heat shimmer when it roared at point-blank range was a beautiful touch... They handled the "wings" the way they should have, too ;)

Mind you, the rest of the film was beautifully done, too - the only (very mildly) jarring note was Arwen replacing Glorfindel in one of the key sections. Mind you, it worked well, even though it was probably only a ruse to get some female leads a bit more noticed, in these politically correct days...

Shame, though - I liked Glorfindel and his horse, Asfaloth, even though they were very minor characters :)

"Noro lim, noro lim, Asfaloth!"

Yes but the grittyness of the settings in Warrior were pretty "true to life", parts of NZ really are like that. And some do live that way. Thats why its so hard hitting.
New Zealand does have a large gang culture.
Alan Duff did extensive research into the gang culture particulary (sp) in the South Auckland area before he wrote the book.

Also made a sequel called "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted"
It was not quite as well recieved as Warriors but still a good movie and worth a watch.
