Singers without brains

Sorry, but if Bruce Cockburn is involved, then I want nothing to do with it!

It is certainly fair, as I suspect may the case, to disagree with Bruce Cockburn's politics, but to accuse him of a lack of brains is without any basis in fact.

eh? i have no idea what you just said Avery?????

hey maybe you could pick up a few speaking / writing poiinters from our PM .... lol ..

Bruce Cockburn is cool ... as are of course The Bare Nakeds ...

when was this concert? who else performed?

and you know what dear? i think any time any of Canada's finest musicians would donate their time and money to a charitable cause is ok in my books ...

rock on Canucks!

The following is an excerpt from one of Canada's national papers:

Canadian rock music heavyweights joined forces last night to aid Afghan people, selling out a concert to raise money and awareness of the plight of the estimated 7.5 million refugees.

The event, Music Without Borders, which featured Alanis Morissette, the Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, Bruce Cockburn, the Barenaked Ladies and rapper Choclair, raised $700,000 for United Nations agencies through the sale of tickets at $35 each. Money was also being pledged throughout the evening from phone numbers posted on two televised broadcasts. By the show's finale, one of the hosts, CBC's Rick Mercer, told the crowd more than $1-million had been raised.

There were few surprises in an evening that had a decided non-political flavour. There were only a few flags visible and most bands stuck to samplers of their best-known tunes that kept young fans singing along right through to a much anticipated set of favourites by the Tragically Hip.

It wasn't until after midnight that all the performers returned to the stage to belt out an enthusiastic version of Neil Young's Rockin' in the Free World, before sending the screaming fans into the night.

It wasn't until a decidedly more upbeat Barenaked Ladies took to the stage as the third act that the mood in the packed Air Canada Centre turned to fun. The crowd cheered and joined with the band in singing many of its hits.

"It's a good deal when you get to have fun and do good things at the same time," said guitarist Ed Robertson, whose band was introduced by Canadian actor Jason Priestley.

Fans heard all of the band's best songs and were treated to the usual Ladies' antics. One Week turned into the chicken dance and If I Had a Million Dollars gave band members a chance to talk about the evening's fundraising. They ended the 45-minute set with Brian Wilson.

Mr. Mercer, CBC News anchor Peter Mansbridge and MuchMusic VJ George Stroumboulopoulos were the hosts for the evening, which included brief guest appearances by Toronto Raptors star Vince Carter, Mr. Priestley and actor Harlan Williams.

Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace received a chorus of cheers and raised fists when he told the crowd: "I'm damn proud to be a Canadian."

Ms. Morissette, who was the second-last performer, brought a different tone again to the evening, by introducing songs many in the crowd were unfamiliar with, although she enjoyed applause when she sang You Learn and Thank U.

All aspects of the show were donated, from performers' time and rental of the Air Canada Centre to union workers, ticket fees, security, catering and concert production and promotion.

Before the concert, the musicians presented the $700,000 cheque, representing 100 per cent of the ticket sales, to Steve Mason, executive director of the United Nations Association in Canada. The money will be targeted to such UN agencies as the World Food Program, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the United Nations Children's Fund.

With three star-studded weekend concerts -- in New York, Washington and Nashville -- raising millions of dollars in pledges to help U.S. victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Canadians said yesterday they wanted to focus their efforts in another direction.

"This is about Canadian artists banding together for the people of Afghanistan," the Barenaked Ladies' Mr. Page said at a news conference before the event. "There are a lot of issues at work here, but basically what's happening is that people are putting their ideologies aside in order to help people."

Okay, Bruce has brains. My car has four-way flashers and just like Bruce, I rarely use them.

Remove Cockburn from the roster and you have a damn good show!

Are you implying that feeding the Afghanies isn't a worthwhile cause?

I'm all for benefit concerts, etc. to raise money to help the families of the victims of the WTC incident... and as an American, have contributed to the funds...

but why shouldn't we raise money to help the other victims of the Taliban? Who has suffered more than the people of Afghanistan?

Have I misunderstood your rant?

Fine, you don't like his music or his politics. Pretty much the same way I feel about Ted Nugent.
For my money, without Cockburn, I'd have walked after the Barenaked Ladies.

Not to belabor the point, but the guy has over twenty years of selling records, packing shows and winning awards for serious, thoughtful music, not usually the accomplishments of the dim.

You and a lot of others, but I've seen the Tragically Hip and thought they were just the Bombastically Silly. Alanis is too screechy for me, but, like I said, it's all subjective opinion.

Whatever you like, enjoy it...

ok let me get this straight, Thomas ...

you think The Barenakeds are good ...

but you think The Hip are "bombastically silly" ... ????

how weird .... almost reversed with what people usually think ....

but as you said .... it's all subjective, eh?

I'd be thrilled with your company, Issy. We'll teach that Philistine Thomas Paine:D that the Canadian gene pool for talent runs very deep!

The only thing I'd insist on is when Alannis does "Thank You" she wears the very same outfit she wore in her video of same!

oh? let me think now ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

what did Alanis wear in that video ...

ahhhh yes now i remember ...

she was al fresco natural ... ;)

Yep, the BNL are way silly, but it seems like that's what they set out to be, and I always like an act that's comfortable in its own skin, so to speak. Besides, who else ever wrote a song about Brian Wilson? The Tragically Hip, on the other hand, seem to take themselves very seriously, which would be fine if I hadn't watched their front man running in circles around the stage, arms extended like a little kid playing airplane. *g* As for Alanis, I'm hardly the only one that finds her screechy. Anyway, it IS all subjective and I never criticize anyone for their likes and dislikes, but neither do I feel compelled to share them.

Mensa:

No philistine here, homes. I have the utmost appreciation for many Canadian artists, among them Bruce Cockburn (hah!), Great Big Sea, Neil Young, Natalie McMaster, 4/5 of The Band, Burton Cummings and the artistes of the Windsor Ballet. *g*

I am an equal-opportunity listener in regard to country of origin. I like who I like and take a pass on who I don't. Until this thread, I couldn't have told you if The Tragically Hip were from Ontario province or Ontario Street here in Chicago.

that is so great to hear Thomas ... an equal opportunity listener, eh? ... tres cool darling ...

but what about Sarah McLachlan? ;)

and it's so true ... it would be terribly boring if we all agreed on what music we like ... viva la difference ..

but i must say i love The Barenakeds too .... i think they are brilliant ...

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane
When i'm surrounded i just can't stop

It's a matter of instinct, It's a matter of conditioning,
It's a matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and i'll salivate -- how'd you like that
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue
'Cause right now i'm
lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well i'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did

So i'm lying here
Just staring at the ceiling tiles
And i'm thinking about what to think about
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile
And i'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
Because i'm
lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well i'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did

And if you want to find me i'll be
out in the sandbox
Wondering where all the hell all the
Love has gone
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun
And singing "Fun Fun Fun"

I had a dream
That i was three hundred pounds
And though i was very heavy
I floated til i couldn't see the ground
I floated til i couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, i couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, i couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me because i'm
lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well i'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive call it compulsive call it insane
When i'm surrounded i just can't stop

Shame on me. I love Sarah McLachlan. I think she is incredibly smart and talented and, to confess a guilty pleasure, very sexy, too. I almost posted lyrics from "Possession" on the recent "erotic lyrics" thread, but they looked kind of wimpy in comparison to Prince. *g*

Her name just didn't click when I ran my brief mental roll-call of musical Canadians. (And no, I didn't forget Rush, too. *g*)

and it's so true ... it would be terribly boring if we all agreed on what music we like ... viva la difference ..

Ain't that the truth? It's a big world of tunes out there and I try to keep an open mind, not only to giving new and different stuff a try, but also to remembering that every artist I don't care for has thousands, maybe millions, of fans who do. To the converse, artists I admire greatly make other people gag. Hell, my ex-wife actually cited my Tom Waits records as examples of mental cruelty in the divorce petition, and that was before "Bone Machine." *g*

Thanks for posting the lyrics to Brian Wilson. I need to go play "Rock Spectacle" now...

Just for the record I'll weigh in here. How many people would have written about Brian Wilson? I don't know, he's not exactly an unknown is he?

The Tragically Hip were once summed up perfectly to me by a friend from Scotland as "ethnic music". They're Canadians playing Canadian music for Canadians, not saying other folks can't enjoy them but you have to realize that they're about something that's exquisitely canadian. Brian Wilson? They wrote a song about Bill Barilko(The fact that 50 Mission Cap wasn't on that greatest Canadian Rock songs ever shows what a fucked up list it was.

By the way, like American music the best Canadian music never makes it much further than local status. try Sloan, Thrushhermit or Odds. Great stuff.

Isabella, I'd prefer to maintain the icy silence with my ex that has served us well for so many years. Besides, she's probably still busy mourning the death of John Denver...

And, EBW, no, Brian Wilson isn't an unknown, but it took 30 years before anybody wrote a song about him. *g* And I see your point about The Tragically Hip. Not being Canadian, along with being somewhat of a geezer, it's probably not surprising that I didn't like them.

is that you, Avery???? ... honey i don't think the U.S. is going to "blow up everything anyway" .... a good part of their itinerary has to do with humanitarian relief in Afghanistan ... Americans and Canadians (and all countires in the coalition) are extremely concerned with helping the innocent victims there ... aren't you???

and ummmm EBW - i would never have considered The Hip as "ethnic" ... oh god no ... yikes that would be an insult to me ...

and The Tea Party, Chef? oh yea they are an amazing band ... a cross between Led Zeppelin and The Doors ... very trippy music ...

oh and i caught this article in the paper today:

Toronto – More that $1 million has been raised for humTanitarian relief in Afghanistan by Sunday’s six hour Music Without Boarders concert in Toronto, organizers said.

“The response has been tremendous”, said Steve Mason, executive director of the United Nations Association in Canada. “These funds will significantly increase the capacity of both the United Nations and War Child Canada to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries”.

The amount raised is expected to increase in the weeks ahead with mail-in and walk-in donations, Mason said.
