Agreed. They could be black as far as I'm concerned--just as long as the site developers paid a little bit of attention to suggestions.

Agreed.
I definitly support the idea of having a sign of it's own for ratings between 4.00 and 4.50.
I agree. Hmm, what color for warm, but not red hot.![]()

It wouldn't be an "H" at all because that stands for "Hot". Maybe a pink "W" for "Warm". The problem there is that "W" already stands for something.Maybe an "L" for "Lukewarm" or a "T" for "Tepid".
Pink or orange would be okay for color.

I'd suggest keeping the "hot H" (maybe orange) for the 4-4.5 stories and making the higher 4.5-5 level "sizzling S" (the red).
And, yeah, it would be great for one of the forum members claiming that Laurel/Mani dialogues with them frequently to propose it directly.
My $0.02 on the new voting system.
I think it is a perceptual thing that's causing votes to be lower.
Under the old system a four meant clicking on a thermometer that looked rather empty. A lot more empty than the full one did. So people tended to click on the full one if they liked the story.
Under the new system, four stars looks pretty damned good. So people tend to vote that. For most a story has to be beyond excellent to rate five stars.
Just my opinion.
P. S. I like the idea of giving an orange H or red S to stories.

You don't even see the thermometer unless you read or want to write a public comment. Maybe if you vote on a star AND vote on a thermometer, the vote might get swept. It shouldn't; it should just count as a single vote. The thermometer is there to tell the author how you voted.
I'd like to see the thermometer done away with.
Let comments stand on their own as good, bad, or indifferent and totally separate from any form of voting.

I agree with that. Better yet, only have it visible to the author. That would be possible. I can go to my index, which nobody else who does not know the password can do, and I can see the total views, which does not appear anywhere else that I know of. I can also delete comments if I choose.
Getting rid of it completely at this point seems the most logical course. The percentages on the thermometer differing from the number ratings on the stars is confusing to some. It appears that it's buggering up the sweep bot. People are forever forgetting to set the thing in the first place. Dropping it would reduce bytes from the page load, and might even eliminate a database query.
Time to throw away the thermometer.
