Feedback Request - New Lit Voting Element

I definitly support the idea of having a sign of it's own for ratings between 4.00 and 4.50.

Pink. Pink is a cute colour and is lighter then red. I would love some pink H's. please please please

Erin

They could be black as far as I'm concerned--just as long as the site developers paid a little bit of attention to suggestions.

We could try a formal request and see what happens.

I agree. Hmm, what color for warm, but not red hot. ;)

It wouldn't be an "H" at all because that stands for "Hot". Maybe a pink "W" for "Warm". The problem there is that "W" already stands for something. Maybe an "L" for "Lukewarm" or a "T" for "Tepid". Pink or orange would be okay for color. :D

An "S" for "Smoking" 'cause after that it's Hot. :D

I'd suggest keeping the "hot H" (maybe orange) for the 4-4.5 stories and making the higher 4.5-5 level "sizzling S" (the red).

And, yeah, it would be great for one of the forum members claiming that Laurel/Mani dialogues with them frequently to propose it directly.

I like this idea.

My $0.02 on the new voting system.

I think it is a perceptual thing that's causing votes to be lower.

Under the old system a four meant clicking on a thermometer that looked rather empty. A lot more empty than the full one did. So people tended to click on the full one if they liked the story.

Under the new system, four stars looks pretty damned good. So people tend to vote that. For most a story has to be beyond excellent to rate five stars.

Just my opinion.

P. S. I like the idea of giving an orange H or red S to stories.

Hmmm. You must have had a different voting view on stories than I did under the old system. What was at the end of the stories were buttons, not a thermometer--the thermometer was on the separate public comment view. An that hasn't gone away in the view I get.

I don't think the thermometer has anything to do with it. Most people vote by clicking on one of the stars. Previously, a "5" was "excellent". Now, a "5" is "one of the best I've ever read". I would have no problem rating a story as excellent, but I could be very hesitant to label it one of the best ever.

You don't even see the thermometer unless you read or want to write a public comment. Maybe if you vote on a star AND vote on a thermometer, the vote might get swept. It shouldn't; it should just count as a single vote. The thermometer is there to tell the author how you voted.

I'd like to see the thermometer done away with.

Let comments stand on their own as good, bad, or indifferent and totally separate from any form of voting.

It's starting to look like every vote attached to a comment is being swept. Keeping track of a couple of older stories, I see new votes without comments appear and stay, but any time there's a comment, the vote is gone within 24 hours.

So if someone takes the time to leave a public comment, it appears that their vote is now rendered invalid :(

Yeah. I don't half mind the usual inane comment that I've put a gay male story in the wrong category when anyone who reads gay male knows there's only one category a gay male reader will go to to read a gay male story--but when they've given the story a zero on the thermometer simply because they don't understand that reality, I do see red.

I agree with that. Better yet, only have it visible to the author. That would be possible. I can go to my index, which nobody else who does not know the password can do, and I can see the total views, which does not appear anywhere else that I know of. I can also delete comments if I choose.

Getting rid of it completely at this point seems the most logical course. The percentages on the thermometer differing from the number ratings on the stars is confusing to some. It appears that it's buggering up the sweep bot. People are forever forgetting to set the thing in the first place. Dropping it would reduce bytes from the page load, and might even eliminate a database query.

Time to throw away the thermometer.

So, who knows Laurel and/or Manu well enough to draw their attention to the last couple of pages of this thread and maybe actually get a response?

I like the idea of just having it visible to the author. That way, we would know who really meant it when they raved about a story and said it was one of the best they have ever seen.

I think the sweeper is going even crazier. The story of Bobbi that I mentioned is down to two votes. For over 10,000 views that is pretty low. It seems to me Group sex is not a very popular category, but this seems awfully low. I would think there would be a better way to encourage comments, because I get few of those also. :(

I also think this is a great idea.

However, I would make the new rating postion go from 4.25 to 4.50. I think that this increment would bring the new "Star Voting System" in line with the old voting system, while placing a story with a rating over 4.50 in a special category.

I say this because I believe that most "good", but not "great" stories still usually earn above a 4.00 rating under the new system.
