Federal health officials have fined the American Red Cross nearly $9.6 million for sloppy and unsafe blood management practices, the second multi-million-dollar penalty levied against the agency in the last two years.

The new Food and Drug Administration fine follows inspections at 16 Red Cross blood centers between April and October 2010 that revealed ongoing problems that appeared to endanger donors and to allow potentially contaminated blood into the nation’s supply.

Red Cross doesn't handle our blood supply here. I have no fear of receiving blood from our blood bank.

I used autologous blood for my surgery last year. It's safe and easy to do if your surgery is planned in advance. And it puts no stress on your community's blood supply.

It's my own blood. Can't get better than that.

Only here to stalk Sigh.

I've nothing to add on Blood other than that I am disallowed to donate due to two of their rules:

1. you must be 110 pounds or more.
2. Variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease travel restrictions.

I can't donate blood in the US or Ireland but I can here. Weirdness.

The FDA is a dangerous criminal enterprise that cannot be trusted.

My time in the U.K., Greece and Turkey are what disqualify me. Plus the weight thing which totally pisses me off, but apparently small people cannot spare a pint.
