Fourth of July terror warning issued by FBI, Homeland Security
Bill Keveney and Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY 4:49 p.m. EDT June 27, 2015

Federal authorities have warned local law enforcement officials across the country about a heightened concern involving possible terror attacks targeting the July 4th holiday, a U.S. law enforcement official said.

While there was no specific or credible threat of attack, the official said the intelligence bulletin prepared by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI alerted local colleagues to the ongoing threats posed by the Islamic State and other homegrown extremists. The official was not authorized to comment publicly.

The bulletins are frequently issued in advance of major U.S. holidays out of an abundance of caution and concern that operatives may exploit the timing to generate greater attention.

The warning comes as federal investigators have worked to disrupt a number of Islamic State-inspired plots, including a planned assault earlier this month on police officers in Boston. In that case, authorities fatally shot Usaamah Rahim as he allegedly planned to attack police with military-style knives.

Also this month, a New York suspect in a Islamic State-related terror investigation was arrested after attacking an FBI agent with a kitchen knife during a search of his home.

Fareed Mumuni, 21, was charged with attempted murder, after he emerged as a suspect in alleged plots to use pressure-cooker explosives and knives to attack police.

In a statement Friday following attacks in Tunisia, France and Kuwait, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said local law enforcement was being encouraged to be "vigilant and prepared'' in preparation for July 4th celebrations.

"We will also adjust security measures, seen and unseen, as necessary to protect the American people,'' Johnson said. "We continue to encourage all Americans to attend public events and celebrate this country during this summer season, but always remain vigilant.''

The secretary also referred to last week's the deadly Charleston church shooting, saying that such "acts of mass violence will never divert, discourage or frighten us.''

"The alleged killer sought to divide us,'' Johnson said. "Instead, his actions appear to have had the opposite effect in South Carolina, where people of different races have come together to denounce the tragedy and mourn those killed.''

PROGRESSIVES NEED PERSPECTIVE: . . .according to Bari Weiss, who writes about “Love Among the Ruins.”

On Friday my phone was blowing up with messages, asking if I’d seen the news. Some expressed disbelief at the headlines. Many said they were crying.

None of them were talking about the dozens of people gunned down in Sousse, Tunisia, by a man who, dressed as a tourist, had hidden his Kalashnikov inside a beach umbrella. Not one was crying over the beheading in a terrorist attack at a chemical factory near Lyon, France. The victim’s head was found on a pike near the factory, his body covered with Arabic inscriptions. And no Facebook friends mentioned the first suicide bombing in Kuwait in more than two decades, in which 27 people were murdered in one of the oldest Shiite mosques in the country.
They were talking about the only news that mattered: gay marriage. . . .

The barbarians are at our gates. But inside our offices, schools, churches, synagogues and homes, we are posting photos of rainbows on Twitter. It’s easier to Photoshop images of Justice Scalia as Voldemort than it is to stare evil in the face.

You can’t get married if you’re dead.

True that.

On average, between 5 and 10 people will die each 4th of July weekend from fires caused by fireworks. Then you have to add in those killed in road accidents or gunfire, drunkenness and drugs.

Unless these folks are using truck bombs or firing into crowds, they'll have a high bar to overcome.

At our gates, aka fucking Tunisia. Christ, dude, what would you consider far away?

They just issue a bulletin for every idea they can think of so they wont be accused of not warning people. It is meaningless.

SIS ATTACKS IN AMERICA ARE COMING, Max Boot warns at Commentary:

By its own depraved standards, last Thursday and Friday were gruesomely successful days for ISIS. On Thursday, a suicide squad of ISIS fighters infiltrated Kobani, the Syrian town it had previously lost to Kurdish militia, and killed 145 residents. Then, on Friday, ISIS was linked to two massacres at different ends of the Middle East: in Tunisia a gunman armed with an Ak-47 killed at least 47 vacationers at a beach resort, while in Kuwait a suicide bomber killed at least 24 Shiites at a mosque. ISIS may also be connected to the French Muslim attacker who beheaded the manager of an American-owned chemical plant in France and tried to blow up the entire facility. All this only a few days after ISIS released another of its patented snuff films showing prisoners being drowned alive in a cage.

The exact connections between ISIS and the foreign attacks remains to be determined but the fact that ISIS claimed credit for the Kuwait and Tunisia attacks suggests that it is expanding its attention, from Syria and Iraq toward a more international wave of terror designed to better compete with Al Qaeda, which has long been focused on the “far enemy” (i.e., the U.S. and its allies). Already ISIS sympathizers have been linked to attacks in the U.S. such as the thwarted attempt to shoot up an exhibition of Mohammad cartoons in Texas. It’s a safe bet that the U.S. will not be exempt from ISIS’ growing foreign focus, and that some future attacks will succeed.

This current period really does have a summer of 2001 feel to it, doesn’t it?

Pay No Attention to the Terrorist Behind the Curtain
In case you missed it, there was a rather remarkable exchange today on CBS This Morning.

Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morrell was a guest; nothing really remarkable about that, since Mr. Morrell now works as a national security analyst for the network. But his comments about a potential terrorist attack over the 4th of July weekend were enough to give anyone pause.

Mr. Morrell noted that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security recently issued a bulletin warning of a possible strike, and that such advisories are provided on a regular basis. Still, he said, "there's nothing routine about this particular one for me."

[Morrell] said the FBI and Department of Homeland Security's recent bulletin resonated with him for two reasons. One note for concern, he said, is the large number of people who align themselves with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

"There's been about 50 people in the last 12 months who have been arrested in the United States for being radicalized by ISIS, wanting to go fight there or wanting to conduct an attack here," Morell said.

He's also worried about ISIS' "call to arms" for attacks against the terror group's enemies during Ramadan.

And the terror group's latest proclamation is not an idle threat; last week, operatives tied to the group conducted attacks in Kuwait, Tunisia and France, killing more than 60 people. The strike in France was aimed at an American-owned company; the massacre on a Tunisian beach targeted western tourists. Fifteen Britons were among the 38 who died.

Morrell, like all career spooks, speaks in measured tones. He is not prone to exaggeration, even in his new role as a network pundit. And, as former senior CIA official, he has extensive ties in the intelligence community. While it's doubtful that anyone called him and definitively predicted an attack over the holiday weekend, Mr. Morrell has probably heard from former colleagues who are expressing serious concerns.

None of this should come as any surprise. ISIS-related activity in the United States has increased dramatically. Along with the arrests cited by Michael Morrell, the FBI announced earlier this year that it is investigating ISIS suspects in "all 50 states."

With that level of penetration and activity, it's easy to envision an attack during the holiday weekend, by a radicalized "lone wolf," or something more sophisticated.

Meanwhile, the Obama Administration is saying very little about a possible strike. During today's press briefing, White House spokesman Josh Ernest said there is "no credible threat" to planned 4th of July celebrations.

Of course, those events represent a tiny fraction of the daily activities across the nation. So, you may be (relatively) safe at that picnic, concert or fireworks show, but you might get whacked by a sniper on the drive home, or a suicide bomber inside the big box retailer while shopping for your backyard barbeque. By focusing on holiday events, Mr. Ernest gives himself (and his bosses) lots of wiggle room.

To be fair, the discussion of potential terrorist strikes places any administration in a difficult position. Say too much and you tip your hand about intelligence sources/methods, or on-going counter-terrorism operations. Or, you chase vacationers away from beaches, amusement parks and other tourist meccas on one of the busiest weekends of the year. But if you say too little, thousands of ordinary may be exposed to unnecessary risks and some of them may die.

Simply stated, the reassurances of Josh Ernest don't square with the concerns expressed by Michael Morrell. The next week will determine who was closer to the truth.

To be fair we did just have an attack on a lot of people by somebody with associations to racist groups (if only tangential ones) and the Aryan Supremacy folks like significant dates as much as the next group of total extremists. I doubt that it's likely, but it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility, particularly with the heightened climate at this point.

yes, just like ISIS

yes, just like ISIS

ISIS has had agents caught on US Soil. However they'd be much more likely to attack on a day that was significant to THEM... Like the anniversary of a death of one of their members, or an Islamic Holy Day, they aren't trying to scare us so much as attract new members. As such our days of importance are not so significant to them as theirs.

White Supremacist groups on the other side of the coin, also want to attract new members, but they typically refer to themselves as "Patriots" they are "liberating" us from the "Zionist Occupied Government." Their new members and their agenda depends on days of significance to the US.

Violent Militia groups see themselves as the descendants of the founding fathers fighting against a reborn government that they perceive to be as bad as Britain was.

Now if you can't see why those two groups would think the fourth was more significant than ISIS would, you really don't understand terrorism, or terrorist groups...

you musta dropped a weight on your head, you are a DUMBELL

No... I'm somebody who has actually fought against the organization that later became ISIS, I'd say I've got a little bit of experience and study in this matter. I've also studied White Supremacist groups... Not like the guys who fly the flag, like real white supremacist groups, and real militia groups, like the people who advocate the overthrow of the government, those folks... So I'd say I've got a bit of experience.

I bet you even did the WHITE PAPER stuff:rolleyes:

The "White Paper Stuff", I doubt it... I mostly did my job, which hopefully got terrorists from being alive terrorists to being not alive terrorists and made sure that alive Marines stayed alive Marines.

BREAKING=> ISIS Publishes Map of July 4th FBI Command Centers

FOX News reported Monday evening on Special Report that the FBI is setting up command centers around the country to prepare for possible terror attacks on the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith posted on Twitter about the report:

“FBI tells Fox News it is building command centers around US to monitor terror threats over July 4 holiday”

FOX affiliate WTTG-TV in Washington reported federal agencies have sent out warnings to police departments around the country.

On Tuesday The Gateway Pundit reported that the FBI has canceled all vacations for agents over the 4th of July weekend.

Now this…
ISIS posted a map of July 4th FBI command centers on Wednesday.
The map shows the temporary command posts set up across America for the upcoming Independence Day weekend.

Anything But Routine, Redux
Two days ago, former Deputy CIA Director Michael Morrell said there was "nothing routine" about warnings of possible ISIS attacks in the CONUS during the 4th of July weekend.

At the time, we noted it was quite unusual for a former intelligence official to be so blunt in his assessment. Mr. Morrell (who made the observation on CBS This Morning) went on to say that he "wouldn't be surprised if we're sitting her a week from today talking about an ISIS attack in the United States over the [July 4th] weekend."

Now, we're beginning to see why Morrell offered such a dire prediction. Shepard Smith of Fox News reported last night the FBI is establishing special command centers in 56 cities around the country, to prepare for possible terrorist attacks during the holiday period.

Not to be outdone, ISIS quickly posted a map, showing the locations of those command facilities. Twitter and the blogosphere quickly exploded, with some wondering how the terror group could quickly access such sensitive information. Turns out it wasn't so hard after all; the command centers are located at FBI field offices, except those in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. That information is readily available to anyone with internet access.

But there are more signs of mounting fears about a possible weekend attack. A federal official told Gateway Pundit that FBI agents scheduled for vacations over July 4th have been told to cancel their plans, and report for duty. The same source also reports that FBI agents are telling family and friends to avoid "official" holiday celebrations. This mirrors earlier claims that ISIS may target large community gatherings on the 4th, hoping to inflict maximum casualties.

So far, there has been no official comment from the bureau. But the establishment of multiple command centers (over a holiday weekend) and cancelling leave for field agents are highly unusual steps, and more indications that something is in the offing.

To be fair, this may be nothing more than a bluff by ISIS. If they can keep more Americans at home on Independence Day, the group can claim a major propaganda victory. On the other hand, ISIS is firmly committed to carrying out more attacks against our homeland, and they would gain even more publicity and support by mounting a successful strike on one of our most important national holidays.

In terms of preparation, creation of so many command centers may be nothing more than an abundance of caution. Yet, it may also indicate that the feds are way behind the curve in battling this particular threat. Put another way: the FBI may be establishing multiple command facilities because terror "chatter" and other indicators suggest an attack this weekend is all-but-certain. But the feds don't have enough specific information to concentrate resources or make preemptive arrests.

And here's another possibility: ISIS is on the verge of a July 4th spectacular, striking multiple CONUS targets at roughly the same time. That's another reason the FBI would see the need for so many command centers across the country.

If the feds are able to close the intelligence gap and get a better handle on potential attacks, we may see a series of preemptive raids beginning tomorrow and continuing into Friday. If the raids don't materialize, that would suggest the threat has passed, or federal agencies still can't pinpoint possible targets.

Enjoy your 4th of July.
