I've noticed a few members listing themselves in their favourites, not just as favourite author and but also their own individual stories.

I don't have an argument with this in one sense, but on the other hand, I view favourites like public comments - a recommendation (or not :D) from one reader to another - and am slightly miffed.

What are other people thinking?

I'd never list my own stories... but that's just because I'm completely enamoured by other authors on the site that are SO much better than I am. :)

Ditto.

I have noticed that too. Personally I find it humorous. If you are listed in your own favorites what good does that do? If someone is looking at your favorites they already have an interest in you. And since those are links to your profile that they're already reading, all you've really done is proven yourself to be concieted.

I see the favorites page as being a place to endorse other peoples works.

Yep!

And I guess what is the point if you can join under 15 different names and list yourself as favourite 15 times?

Well I admit, I do list my alter ego simply as a way of linking that story with mine. You can't find Rideme Cowgirl's stories anywhere else in my profile.

But it is a good story. ;)

*burp*

It's masturbation of the ego...

And yes, finding your name in someone's favorites is like a handjob.

Sincerely,
ElSol

LOL They do?

:D

I have people in my favorites because I would like to write like them, someday.

:D

Guilty as charged. :D I see it as a way to: (a) indicate that I'm confident in my own work; and (b) attract more readers via the Favorites Portal.

As I posted in the "Do Votes Matter?" thread:

We share our writing because we want others to read (and react to) it. The more readers, the better. Thus, anything that attracts more readers will always matter.

Now, I haven't listed individual stories/poems ... but the idea is growing on me as a way of telling the reader which of my own work I like best.

Well, this "other people" is thinking that those people are sad. ;)

If I wanted, I could be top of the favourites portal (or pretty damn near it) - I have that many alts. :D :p BUT, I wouldn't have got there without "cheating", so it would mean nothing.

To have yourself on your own favourites list!?!? Oh dear. It goes without saying that I love what I write, and am one of my favourite writers, why else would I write what I do, and enjoy it so much? To have myself on my favourites list just wouldn't feel right, and to me it's quite a desperate thing to do.

Sorry, Imp. :p ;)

Good Lord, why? It's how you feel. Integrity is the characteristic I value more than any other -- and remaining true to yourself at all times is a sure sign of it.

I use my favorites list as a link to my fave stories/author pages. If someone's already on my member page they don't need a link to me! (Besides...i doubt anyone even looks at them to be honest. I mean who cares who my favorite authors are besides me?)

I find a person listing themselves in their own Favourites page as being kind of egotistical.

Kind of like Reggie in the old Archie comics.

"I love me.
I think I'm grand.
When I'm with me,
I hold my hand."

My opinion only.

I would never be so presumptuous as to list myself as one of my favorites. That's just so wrong.

Not that I don't like me. :D My story is good because my editor is fantabulous.

Awww, and now I wanna snog you.

I find it deeply amusing. And actually, I think it's an excellent sign of quality. Anyone so desperate for a "Favorites" listing and so otherwise lacking in them as to list his or her own work has told me all I need to know about the quality of the stories in question.

So if you aren't listed in anybodys' favourites that must make you a blimmin genius.

I think my favorites list has one author and one story, and neither are mine. I don't even vote on my own stories, for Chrissake. I've never understood why people even do that.

Speaking of which, I should probably go back and update said list...

Favorites......

One thing about being less than computer literate, I don't have to worry about even finding a favorites list.........

I can find the stories, I can search for my favorite authors, categories, so I am successful! I do have a favorite story of mine from my stories. Does that count.

Some authors give thought! Some smiles. Gauche - wanking? Lou -fantasy?

Oh, no I would not even have thought to list myself on my own favorites list. Whereever that is?

I don't know how people are using the Favorites list. Just now, I went to take a look at it, clicked on someone's name at random, and saw that she had no stories or poems up at all. Yet 17 people had put her on their favorite authors' list?

There are occassions where someone will pull everything, for various reasons. Sheath is still on my favs despite having pulled everything. My little tribute to my friend, and a way of showing my support for her decision. I don't want to go into why, at least not here, but she had good reasons.

Perhaps the person you are saying is cited on 17 lists had something happen as well. (could be a good thing too. some pull their stuff thru agreement with a publisher...)
