So there are a few threads about sex scenes in mainstream movies but what about in mainstream literature? I think I probably first came across sex scenes in schlocker espionage thrillers as a teenager. I can't remember any of the titles but the scenes I can.

I flicked through copies of The French lieutenants woman and Lady Chatterly's Lover just for the naughty bits. More recently Michael Houllbeq's Platform and Atomised have scenes that never fail to get me aroused. In Platform the main couple go on holiday and on getting to their room she takes off her clothes, leaving on her panties, and straddles his face. A maid discovers them and they invite her to join them. Delicious. Anybody else enjoy those or got any favourite books/scenes they care to share?

One "mainstream" novel that I remember for its eroticism is D.M. Thomas's The White Hotel, published in 1981. It's an odd book involving lots of dreamlike sequences, Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis, and the Holocaust. Much of it is incoherent and, as a reader, one frequently feels lost. However, there are some exceptionally steamy scenes, particularly one involving a young couple and a mature woman. In any case it has lived long in the memory; perhaps I should try and fish out a copy and check out what I found so arousing all those years ago.

Story of the Eye, by Georges Bataille, although that would require the term "mainstream" to be pretty plastic.

Stuart Woods has a vivid imagination in his writings. And believe it or not Stephen King !!

the list grows...but with a bent

chatterly yes, but i must say whilst i found her exciting, and the manner inwhich she let her lover take her, admirable, i found his character unappealing sexually.

ayn rand's atlas shrugged delved into a similar debauchery, though made moral and acceptable through her gifted oratory...esp when her lover woould take her that way

anna karenina, inwhich (i forget exactly when, where) after the heroic soldier challenges in a race or game of sorts...he introduces her (or others) to a night of russian...?passion (too many years ago) - memory says orgy of sorts...but at the behest of the officers

now commencing bovary...

but for sheer lust and pleasure - even boxing way above her weight...anne rice's beauty wins out

Diana Gabaldon and her outlander series has excellent erotic writing.. Her sex scenes between Jamie and Claire (the main characters) are superb.. Lots of variety, including gay and occasionally non-consent. She can write a sex scene (or its precursor) so well, with none of the usual wordings you might find in erotica. Big fan, so I'm biased, but lovely intense writing. They are filming a tv series for Starz channel too!

My paperback copy of A Man with a Maid is very dog-eared thanks to it being held open with one hand so many times over the years. It's a classic Victorian-era work of erotica that hits many of my buttons in a big way, the first section especially. It's a deliciously detailed account of a relatively posh high society man named Jack who has built a special room in his house and uses it to capture a young lady of his acquaintance. This proper lady finds herself at the mercy of a man who delights in slowly but surely removing her many layers of clothing, examining her most private areas, and sexually titillating her against her will.

Having read The Clan of The Cave Bear back in the '80s, I am reading the other 5 Jean Auel books about Ayla and her Cro-Magnon exploits.

****Spoiler alert...Ayla ends up with a great set of tits, sexy ass and is a very willing, horny lover. She even gives head...lol

Great stuff, can't put 'em down...I am on the 4th right now. Found a ws called 10,000 free ebooks for Android in Google store, and yes there are free books galore. I have read 25 or so and have 25 or so more on my drive right now. It's awesome if you are a reader.

Could not agree more Jean Auel is fantastic. I have read them all ( Ill save the spoiler) Good choice :)

It's a favorite of mine not for it's eroticism but for it's humour and dirtiness: Roald Dahl's My Uncle Oswald, in which the titular protagonist hatches a plot to start a nobel-calibre sperm bank by capturing samples from donors such as Einstein to Freud to Picasso to Nijinski.

I find Ada or Ardor to be incredibly sexy (more-so than Nabakov's more famous Lolita), but more for the whole affair between Ada and Van Veen than any individual scene.

My favorites are found in The Gap Cycle, a five book series by Stephen R. Donaldson. It's a hardcore sci fi space opera with pirates, alien species, an evil corporation and a corrupt government. There's plenty of sex, primarily of the non consensual variety, with some mind control as well.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have hardly had any time for reading of late but I sought out the Jean Auel books. I enjoyed the sex descriptions more than the story so I didn't read all of them.

Roald Dahl's adult writing is a good shout - I read Uncle Oswald years ago and enjoyed it.

Just started on Lady Chatterley. I've seen a tv adaptation of this and have fond memories of that..

I love The White Hotel. Romantic, sensual and erotic, then tragic. The breastfeeding scene was so beautiful, if surreal.

Couples by John Updike. set in Mad Men days. A great novel and very sensual the illicit affair between Piet and Foxy. The scene where they meet in the bathroom at a society bathroom is SO arousing.

Killing Johnny Fry By Walter Dean Myers has some awesome sex scenes in it. I also really liked The Fermata by Nicholson Baker, and I found this book called Slave Girls of Rome at a library book sale that was really trashy and helped me relieve my frustrations a number of years ago. I love reading sex scenes in books and generally they are my preferred fodder for masturbation and fantasizing. I am curious to see what other recommendations people make.

The Fermata - Nicholas Baker

The scene with the couple and the older woman who was playing with herself herself in a garden

Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, when he fucks his piano teacher next to the railroad tracks.

It isn't fiction, but Nancy Friday's books on women's sexual fantasies are filled with many terribly arousing accounts of sexual experiences and fantasies. My sister enjoyed reading them as well.

Any books by MAYA BANKS. The sex scenes in her books are so incredibly arousing, I was just about sliding off my chair as I was reading them ;) :p
