Favorites not taking

I have many favorites notifications that did not take -- someone has added my story to Favorites, but the hearts number does not change.
And as I far as I can check, the story also does not appear in their favorites list -- which drove some to add my story repeatedly.

It ain't an update issue either -- it never updates.

I think someone said somewhere that a message to laurel/manu fixed this problem for them, but I can't be sure. Also, does this mean that this is the only recourse? And what if all the authors took it?

What to do?

They may be adding to other lists, some or all of which could be private. They all show in our feeds as added to favorites.

I think the favorites function is likely broken. I have audio favorites that I cannot delete. No matter how I de-select or remove the story from my list, the next day it reappears.

Also consider that this site does not use a single point of truth. Data points are copied all over the place. the numbers never match, and the different parts of the site all refresh at different times. It's almost as if someone wants us confused and distracted, but don't worry, it's not a conspiracy...um...well...

Hold the phone. I may have figured it out.

I want to add one anecdote I just discovered to this discussion. I had an apparent fan who was going through my original series story by story, getting through about one a day. They average about 16K so that seems about right for many people's reading. I went to check on him and he maintains a list of every story he's read. No commentary on whether he liked them, other than he read more of the series. Just recording what stories he's read.

Relative to another thread about favorited and not voting, he shows up in my feed as having favorited my story but I do not believe he is voting. We all need to remember that every reader uses the site differently. They are not doing what they do for us, but for themselves.

fair, but I said nothing about voting. simply that I have in my feed, say, 5 notifications that someone favorited a story, but the stars count is 3.

There was another recent thread commenting on favorites who don't vote. I was trying to double dip with that post.

People use favorites as a bookmarking feature. If it's not in their favorite list, that bookmark may have already been used and removed. We get no notification for removal of favorites. ( Anymore. We used to before it apparently hurt people's feelings too much and the feature was removed LOL )

People can create lists now. You can't just check the main favorites list. You have to check any of their other lists as well. People do add stories to multiples of these lists as well. I've seen it. They drop a favorite for it in any list it applies to. One story could go into their Milf, Big Tits, and Hairy Pussy lists if all those elements are present.

People can also create private lists. It appears we get notifications for those as well, but there's no way we can actually see the lists to confirm. Check your lists number by either downloading your statistics or viewing your public profile. The public profile doesn't update as frequently as our private author control panel does, so the only real option is downloading your statistics or watching the numbers like a hawk prior to the event happening. Why that statistic isn't yet available on our private control panel without downloading is

In short, seeing a notification just means it was added to some list at that point. If you're concerned, trade favoriting with an author. If you can get someone create a private list and add you to that to confirm whether or not we get notifications for that — even better.

Hell, I'll do it. I'll create a private and public list and add something to those plus my favorites list if you'd like. Then you can see what you see on your end versus what's happening on my end. Nail down for once and for all exactly how this behavior works. ( Currently. LOL ) What we're passing along as knowledge at the moment is collective observations rather than rigorous testing, honestly. I'm all for getting a little more scientific with it. The offer is on the table if you or anyone else is interested.

The issue around "hearts number not changing" was just discussed on a different thread a couple of days ago. Even though the notification says "Favorite", that's not necessarily true. Readers can bookmark your stories, which adds them to private lists, and we as authors receive the "<user> has added your story to favorites". When you look at their profile, you won't see their private lists. More detail in my linked post.

Per that, if you download your statistics, you'll see two columns. One is Number of Favorites, the second is Number of Times added to a Reading List. Authors receive the "Favorites" notification for both, I've counted it happening. Adding the two columns gives me the correct total.

As to the part about it not getting added to a user's list, I have on rare occasions seen two notifications. I took that as either they intentionally added it to multiple lists, or they clicked on the wrong icon the first time.

If you follow my linked post, I saw this happen with one of my stories just before I made that post. I received the "has added your story to favorites" but the Favorites count didn't change, the Added to Reading List count (in my downloaded stats) had incremented by 1.

I just favorited my newest story figuring since its not getting much response it would be easy to track. I saw the notification on my feed that I did it, and the story now has one more fav on my works page. As for looking at it on the main story lists, they do update more slowly, but it seems like it took.

I checked a story I have on the all time list after it got a couple of favs yesterday, its stuck on the same number but on my works page has an additional 15, so it looks like they're taking on our page and nowhere else.

This happened a few years ago, forgot how long it was frozen for but considering all the issues piling up here I wouldn't expect it to be addressed anytime soon.

I'm an idiot.

I have three pen names. I can favorite/add to list the stories of one of the others with this one, and then go check to see what the author sees on the other side without having to involve anyone else. LMAO

I'll get around to doing a full confirmation of everything that's the common knowledge. Maybe after dinner. See how I feel. The lure of getting back to Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is strong. LOL

Well, here we go. I added to a private list one of my old LST3K stories as Dark that's 20 years old and had zero in the lists column on every track I have since the number was made available. So far, I've received no notification as Dark, but my lists number is now 1 for that story. So, adding to a private list does not generate a notification, but does increment the lists counter for the story.

I created a public list, added that same story to it, and got a notification immediately. When I downloaded the data again, it now shows 2 in the lists column. So public lists do generate a notification, and do increment the list counter.

I created a second public list, added that same story to it, and got a notification immediately. When I downloaded the data again, it now shows 3 in the lists column. So adding the same story to multiple lists does generate a notification for each list it's added to, and increments the list counter.

( All notifications are for "favorites". There's no indication it was added to a list instead of favorites )

All well and good, but my point was that part is working and the main all time fav story list is frozen (once again)

That I can't test as easily. LOL There's been common knowledge about how the favorites notification and statistic updates happen, but to the best of my knowledge, nobody's ever actually tested it rigorously. That was what I was after here. Now we know for certain, because I got all the updates and increments in real time.

If your favorites # differs from the most favorited list #, and the number on the public listing hasn't changed in 48 hours, then it's more than likely frozen. I know the 12 month score toplist for Sci-Fi & Fantasy is frozen, so it wouldn't be the only one. I'm going to watch that one for a couple more days, paying more attention to several data points on it to make sure it's not individual stories that are locked rather than the whole list, but then I'll drop a bug report.

It's entirely possible that there's some process that gets gummed up that's responsible for updating all the toplists, resulting in a cascading ice age, and rebooting that for one may unfreeze all of them.

Do you have an example where you got a notification, but NO increase in any of the numbers?
Nope, but I think the OP didn't realize that lists show up in the notifications as "favorites", even though they're not favorites. They won't increment the favorites counter, they increment the list counter. They're two different stats, created by two different means now ( the "bookmark" link on the story page as opposed to the "favorite" link )

Looks like the all time most faved top list has come back and the number of favs on my stories there now match what's on my works page
