Favorites, bookmarks and reading lists

I've been writing here for 2 years now but on this forum only infrequently. I'm confused.

On my Home page, it used to say my story had been "added to Favorites" even when the symbol seemed to indicate it had only been Bookmarked. Now it says "added ... to a Reading List" even when the symbol (a heart) seems to indicate it was Favorited.

And in either case, sometimes the story appears on the reader's "Favorites" page even when the symbol indicates it was only bookmarked, and sometimes it doesn't (or maybe it was removed by the reader; we don't seem to be notified of that).

Also, the spreadsheet you can download from your Works page has columns headed "in reading lists" and "Reading Lists." The numbers differ. What is being counted, Favorites and Bookmarks?

If anyone understands this, I'd appreciate an explanation.

I have noticed this too.

Looks like they just say "on the reading list" even when it's been put under favorites. No idea if this change is permanent but it is recent.

I hadn't noticed this change until you mentioned it. It must be very recent.

I suspect this is what this means: "Added to a reading list" has now become the umbrella term on the Activity List page for stories that readers have EITHER added to their Favorites list OR bookmarked for later reading.

As far as I can tell, too, stories added to a reading list don't necessarily reappear on the list if they've been upgraded to the favorites list from merely being bookmarked. I don't know for sure that this is so, but it seems right based on what I'm seeing.

I noticed it too. Strangely not in all of my writing accounts. I've just scratched my head and moved on. They both show active response.

I got notice that one of my stories was added to a "reading list" today. I have no idea what it means and had never seen that notification before.

Manu mentioned somewhere that changes were being made. This change is what messed things up early last week. Or at least that's what I read between the lines.

Okay so I'm not the only one confused by the change.

Perhaps the Admins thought us writers needed our egos lowered a peg and took away the more satisfactory "Favorites" moniker, which suggests a reader truly enjoyed your story enough to want to save it, and replaced it with the more humbling "Reading List," begging the question of whether they actually read the thing or are just considering getting around to it.

From what I read, there will be two lists. Favorites and reading list. That way the readers can keep the two lists separated. Did I mark this because I loved it or did I mark it to read later. Right now, it is all one list.

For the record, my comment was meant very tongue in cheek lol

There already are two lists, although interpreting them can be confusing.

When I go to my home page and pull up the My Stories Page, I see a list of all my stories with icons and numbers. One is the "heart" icon, which indicates the number of times my story has been favorited.

If I click the "Download Story Stats" icon in the top right above my story list, I will get an Excel file that shows a variety of columns and a list of all my stories. The two columns on the farthest right are "In Reading" and "Reading Lists."

The "In Reading" number corresponds closely to the "Favorites" numbers that are shown on My Stories.

So it appears that "In Reading" (I have no idea why it's called that -- it makes no sense) is the Favorites list, and the "Reading List" column contains the sum of Favorites + Bookmarks, because the right-most column is ALWAYS larger than the one to the left of it.

If there are now two choices, it will hurt the number of favorites, readers aren't going to choose both, you can barely get them to vote.

I mean, one is clearly the "to-be-read" list and the other is "Read". Why would they choose both?

That's how some people have used favorites in the past, after all. They just have a better way or separating the stories they like from the stories they want to read. In a way, doesn't that just encourage people to use the feature? Especially if one is private (to a degree) and the other is not?

The two options have been in place for over a year already, I believe. I haven't personally noticed any signficant negative impact on favorites. As far as I can tell from the number of "added to reading list" notices and from monitoring my favorite numbers, many readers who initially put a story on a "to be read" list DO eventually upgrade them to a favorites list. I say that because on my list, bookmark icons on the Story Activity page far outnumber favorite icons, but my favorite numbers keep rising, and favorites far outnumber bookmarks.

Well, frankly I have found the reading list option difficult to use. Hence why I don't. I just memorize to the best of my ability.

It's much easier than it used to be. Now there is a bookmark icon above the beginning of the story, and you can click on it to add it to a reading list or to a favorites list. The same option exists at the end of the story.

You can easily access either your Favorites list or your Bookmarks list in the far-left menu on your control page.

Well, it's good that you tell me, but on the other hand, it's bad that you have to. It will take time for people to adjust. And I'm still for a short while in my 20s. I shouldn't be struggling with this!

You can also create additional reading lists and make them public (like Favorites) or private (like Read Later). I just posted screengrabs of all this under another thread .

My latest story was published last night. 24 hours ago. Since then I have picked up 7 followers, added to 8 reading lists, and 4 favorites with 3,900 views.

I have no idea what any of this means. I assume "reading list" is a bookmark for the viewer to come back and read at a later date.

Today, for the first time, my home page referred to someone adding a story to a reading list. It showed the bookmark icon. Before, these notices stated that the reader had bookmarked the story.
