favorite tg movies/plays/stories

I finally got around to seeing The Crying Game this summer, and although I was confused near the end after only one viewing, it was interesting enough to warrant another view someday. I liked the first half the best, when he didn't know that she was a he. The little lust/romance thing between then was nice until he realized.
I have yet to see Hedwig (although I really really want to!), and Rocky Horror is one of my favorite movies.
I've wanted to see Boys Don't Cry for a while now, but have not been able to. I'm also intrigued by that made for tv movie, Soldier's Girl. I saw it at Blockbuster, so I think I'm going to rent it sometime soon.
I can't think of any others off the top of my head right now, but I'll think about it over the night. I like the topic. :rose:

thanks cg....i'm not familiar with soldiers story...is that a gender bender too ?

i'm hesitant to see boys don't cry...it sounds so sad...meanness on top of vulnerability...but then i haven't seen it...any reactions to boys don't cry out there ?

I want to see Boys Don't Cry because of that. I have a strange love of disturbing films that linger with me. I feel that after seeing something powerful like that, I'm a different person because of it. I loved Mystic River, I loved Training Day, all of those "hard to watch, but so worth it" movies. That and I've heard so much about Hilary Swank's performance that I have to see it.
There was a thread somewhere in this board about Soldier's Girl...I'll have to find it again...it had a good description of it.

Found it:
Soldier's Girl

Boys Don't Cry is probably one of my all time favorite movies. Definitely great if I want to bawl my eyes out.

Ma Vie En Rose... more upbeat and cute. Good movie. Is in French so either have to know French or be willing to put up with subtitles.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert.... is just such a fun movie.

Soldier's Girl ... rented and saw it twice this weekend. Is a good movie. Didn't make me cry as much as Boys Don't Cry though. *shrug* Though in some ways if you're actually TS there's some things about it that can ruffle your feathers or just reinforce the belief that the T community still has a ton of educating still to do unfortunately. Well at least did for me. Am guessing I would have been better off just reading Calpernia's book first instead.

Still haven't seen Hedwig nor even Different for Girls yet. :( Can't find either of them for rent around here.

Boys Don't Cry is a classic. Hillary Swank is hot in that. I'd go for her! Then again... I'm a lesbian so why not? lol. I must say though that I got so pissed off when I saw Boys Don't Cry, I stayed up all night and couldn't sleep

Rocky Horror Picture Show was great and so was the Crying Game. Those are the only I know of.

But try this on for size! There is a Tranny band! They are called Bitch and Animal and are all about Genderfuck. It's so cool

Oh we're including music in this huh?

Best TG song in my opinion has to be 'In Memory of Rita' by Nancy Nangeroni. Also check out Blue Period & Lisa Jackson.

Might as well include music ;) Oh.. another great band is The Butchies. I love the song Drag King Bar by Bitch and Animal though

Do you mean 'Cycle Sluts from Hell'? If so well unless they've changed the line up since the early 90s then that's not a cross-dressing band... they're all non-tg women I believe. Of course could be talking about different bands I suppose. *shrug*

I noticed that Boys Don't Cry aired on the cable channel Bravo tonight. I suspect they cut or re-edited some of the rape scene and other intense parts, so those of you who have been leery of watching it for that reason might want to try catching it on Bravo. Personally, I adore the movie. Hilary Swank is totally hot (it's too bad she felt the need to take ickyfemme roles after that, that's one typecasting I'd have really enjoyed).

Hedwig is a great movie, but it's also a great stage show. I've seen the movie a dozen times but only seen the show once - I do recommend it though.

Let's see, others... there's Glen or Glenda, the Ed Wood classic. Orlando, starring Tilda Swinton and based on Virginia Woolf. A lot of John Waters stuff, most notably Pink Flamingo. The Birdcage is the Robin Williams version of La Cage aux Folles, I didn't like it too much but that's me. Nathan Lane is good though. I've heard good things about Ma vie en rose but I haven't seen it personally.

I personally think Boys Don't Cry was a horrible movie from a filmic standpoint. The only reason it got critical acclaim was because it was an independent film and because of the story it told. Other than that it was horrible.

I rank it right up there with the The Blair Witch Project on my too much hype for nothing movies.

Just my opinion... I consider it educated.... I am a movie guru. :)

Hey Etoile,

You going to be at the March for Women in April?

Oooh, the what? I hadn't even heard of it. I'll have to check it out.

If you Hilary Swank lovers have HBO make sure you watch Ironjawed Angels.

Personally I would be happy to put that girl on a leash.

Ma vie en Rose is really good, especially if you like movies that have a few surprises and not every single thing is spelled out in big print like in domestic movies.

Icy andro Tilda Swinton, mmm. Flawed movie though, really just great big eye candy and slim on the idea parts.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and throw out Kiss of the Spider Woman. The character Molina is gay, not TG, but his powerful affiliation with the B movie women he describes is really interesting stuff, gayness and gender from a specifically Latin and sorta Baroque viewpoint via the novel.

Too bad I don't get HBO.... Yeah... Hillary Swank in a transgender role I think is so fitting. I dont like seeing her girly as much as do in drag, then again I adore her period.
