My Top 8 Favorite Places in the World are currently (not in any particular order):

1. Monterey, CA - cool little wharf town, home to Steinbeck and a REALLY cool aquarium

2. Pismo Beach, CA - tiny little seaside town, much like where I want to live out my last days

3. San Diego, CA - home sweet home

4. Venice, Italy - the canals, the old buildings, the gnocchi on the boardwalk...

5. Cannes, France - a gorgeous stretch along the ocean, with lots to see and do

6. Coos Bay, OR - trees and sloughs and quiet

7. San Francisco, CA - Ghiradellis, the wharf, Berkeley, trolleys, and good Asian food

8. New York, NY - whatta wild town!

Manu and I are spending Christmas & New Years in Switzerland, so this list may change.

Where are your favorite places, and why?

1. Ashboro, NC - the zoo, right outside of the cougar enclosure. I used to spend hours there, just me and the female cougar. She would sit on one side of the glass, I would sit on the other.

2. Edinburgh, Scotland - beautiful city full of very friendly people.

3. Skyline Drive, Virginia - hubby and I like to hike there.

4. Charlottesville, VA - we spend our anniversaries there.

1. Gort, County Galway, Ireland -- I felt so at home there, it wasn't funny. It's as if I had a connection to the earth itself, the rocks, and I never, ever wanted to leave. I think my fingernail marks are still on the doorway of the B&B. My best friend and my daughter had to drag me out of there.

2. Monterey -- see Laurel's post. There was also a place that sold cookies . . . oh, those were GREAT cookies.

3. Las Vegas -- because there is no place tackier on the face of the earth, and I enjoy kitsch, particularly when it is well done. The clink-clink of quarters in a slot machine is rather soothing, too.

4. The Mojave Desert -- if one needs sky, this is the place to go. Nothing is in the way of it. A great place when the world is too much with you.

5. My front porch -- rocking chair, camphor tree, birds, cats, squirrels. A great place to just be.

I know there will be more come summer, but right now these top the list.

OKay, In no particular order.

1. Thailand - Where I was born, and quite an interesting place to visit.

2. Singapore - You haven't lived before you've had a Singapore Sling, in Raffles Hotel.

3. La Rochelle, France - A little mideveil habour town on the west coast of France. Most be seen, cannot explained

4. Montreal, Canada - What can I say. I had one hell of a time there.

5. San Diego, CA - My kind of town, all the way through. And then Laurel lives there, and that helps too :) Thanks for a great time btw.

6. Paris, France - Well it's Paris folks. Wine and French chicks. You do the math.

7. London, UK - Great city, great parties. Everything you'd want is there.

8. Finally Copenhagen - What can I say, it's MY town.

My favorite places I've been: As brought to you by Tiggs!

Mine have got to be:

1. Nashville TN- Hillbilly Hollywood

2. Denver CO- Everywhere you look is like a postcard.

3. St Croix- USVI- Lived here for two years and loved every minute.

4. Atlanta Ga- The only way this city could improve would involve moving a beach here.

5. Anywhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway- Southern VA- It's just beautiful.

1. Hong Kong- Most exciting and cosmopolitan city I have visited. Beautiful harbor, mountains, great food and Peninsula Hotel has Rolls Royces as taxis!

2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil- Hot hot hot- and not just the temp. Gorgeous cafe-au-lait bronzed men who have gorgeous bodies. Great barbecue restaurants. Beautiful water and mountains.

3. Singapore- I agree with you Xander. It is the cleanest city I have ever seen. No grafitti, no litter, even the highway overpasses are covered in flowers. Truly pretty. And I did the drink thingie at Raffles too and then took a rickshaw ride around town- wild!

4. Nairobi, Kenya- Well, not the city itself, but as a starting point for the most fascinating adventure on earth- photo safari of the animals on all the game preserves.

5.Cairo/Luxor/Aswan, Egypt- So impressive to see the pyramids and the temples

6. Washington DC- I have enjoyed all my visits there- I am a sucker for history and sightseeing- loved the Mint, the FBI, all the 'normal' attractions.

Only a few out've 100's

Out've all of the places that I lived or had an extended visit,,,

The Blue Ridge Parkway,,, anywhere along it's 460 mile length,,, this is tops for relaxation and escape,,, the Peaks of Otter is most likely the best for all around pleasure,,,

Phoenix Az and the areas arond there,,, never knew that the desert could wear so many faces,,, AWESOME sunrises and deep black nights

The Biltmore House in Asheville N.C.,,, unless you have been there there is NO way to adequately describe it

Cedar Key in Florida,,, delightful little place on the Gulf of Mexico

Key West FL,,, the entire place just wraps you up with a snuggly warm feeling

Baltimore MD,,, the inner harbor area, not for the faint of heart in the summer,,, talk about crowded!!

And, as someone else said,,, anywhere in Maine,,, late spring to late fall,,, aaahhhh,,,

Wow, half of Laurel's picks made my list, too:

1. Monterey, CA: 50 miles south of me, go there a LOT. Am a member of Monterey Bay aquarium. Love to watch the jellyfish and the octopus, and those OTTERS are just so darned CUTE, plus they have that new penguin exhibit! The aquarium just drains all the stress right out of me. Fishermen's wharf, and the great fresh clam chowder in a bread bowl: Yummy! Dennis the Menace Park (given to the city of Monterey by cartoonist Hank Ketcham, who created Dennis--we've taken my niece and nephew there many times, they love to climb on the old steam locomotive there). Walking hand-in-hand with my sweetie, barefoot on the wet sandy beach.

2. Pismo Beach. Also like the beach at Santa Barbara, it is a small beach with only a few stores, but very peaceful and serene.

3. San Diego. Have a younger sister there, visited her THREE times this year! And just knowing that Laurel (and the alleged Manu) live there!

4. San Francisco. The art shows, Disney Store, and FAO Schwartz toy store, all at Union Square. The cable cars. Chinatown. Pier 39. Golden Gate Bridge and adjacent Fort Point. Just across the GG bridge, Fort Cronkite (where you can operate an old missile silo and pretend to launch WW III, a great stress reliever), and Muir Woods (a redwood forest).

Now here are a few new ones of my own:

1. The beach at Capitola, CA. The quaint little shops. The peacefulness of the beach. The most romantic little restaurant in the world, Shadowbrook, is near the beach. The steps down to the restaurant amid a series of waterfalls (those who've read my previous postings know I have a THING for waterfalls), and the little cable-car/elevator ride back up to the street. Great food, great atmosphere, reasonable prices.

2. Lake Tahoe. The casinos. The restaurants. Camping lakeside. Ponderosa Ranch (where the TV show Bonanza was filmed).

3. Orlando, FL. Stayed in a great little resort, like our own private house within walking distance from Disney World, and with SEVEN pools at the resort! Disney World, Universal Studios, NASA Kennedy Space Center.

4. Dillon Beach, north of Petaluma, CA. The boat ride to an island where you can go clam-digging. Cows wandering among the RVs at the beach!

5. Paso Robles, CA. About halfway between L.A. and S.F. Interesting little museum of local history. Small and well-maintained parks everywhere. Odd little hamburger joint, when you leave a tip, all the waiters and cooks yell "Yeee-ha! Thanks for the tip!"

6. And favorite, the San Jose area where I live. Lived here all my life, still love it. Great climate, great career opportunities, even if houses are RIDICULOUSLY expensive!

1. Smoky Mtns in the Fall. Nothing like taking a bucket of fried chicken, a bike and a blanket and riding around Cades Cove until you find a spot to watch the deer roam and sit down beside your favorite person and watch the day go by.

2. Gulf Shores, AL. White beaches, a little entertainment but not too much, friendly people and clear water.

3. Oregon. The Oregon Shoreline with its rocky peaks and lighthouses I absolutely adored.

4. Colorado on a ski slope. Watch out baby, I'm coming soon!

5. Manhatten.

6. Went to the Redwood Forest in CA and was awed by their beauty.

7. New Orleans. Ahhhh, food is wonderful - party people galore. I can't wait to go back.

8. KEY WEST is my favorite place. I love the mentality there. Everything is exactly as Buffet sings. Just a kick-back town with history. Spent half an afternoon one day just walking through the graveyard reading the stones.

Banff AB- Just love to go hiking in the mountains, as well as you can meet new interesting people from all over every day.

Many many places I would love to go, but haven't seen yet.....but will one day :)

I've been a few places in my time and plan to go to a lot more but here are the ones that left a lasting impresion.

1) London, my home town and a place I'm having a love hate relationship with, "he who is tired of London is tired of life", I think Samuel Johnson wrote that a few hundred years ago and it's still true.

2) Amsterdam, it's the only place I've ever been that I have promised out loud to return to some day and if you have the chance to go then do, beutiful city and wonderful people.

3) Scotland, not a city I know but I've spent some time there and there are parts that make even a cynic like me feel fresh and young, go to Harris and the Isle of Lewis and marvel at the beuty.

There are a hundred more places I could say but I'll limit myself to these three.

In no particular order...

Oregon Coast - TN, I second that. A few winters ago, a friend and I went out storm chasing on the coast and one of them caught us. Typhoon winds. Not for the faint of heart. It's a lot more tourist-friendly in the summer. There are so many places along the coast to visit; I've lived nearby for over twenty years and still haven't seen them all. :)

Rhine River, Germany - The castles are gorgeous.

Amsterdam, Netherlands - It's Amsterdam. Need I say more? :)

Edinburgh, Scotland - Absolutely wonderful city.

Arbroath, Scotland - Beautiful cliffs along the coast.

Rhyl, Wales - Okay, so I have a thing for coast towns.

Denbigh, Wales - And a thing for castle ruins.

Too many ghost towns, ruins, caves and historical sites in the Pacific Northwest to name. When I'm feeling good enough, I'm usually out exploring. :)

The places I would love to go, but haven't had the chance (yet) are: Paris, New Orleans, NYC, London (I was there briefly but would like to spend more time), and anywhere in Australia, ditto New Zealand.

The Dalton Highway between the Brooks Range and the Yukon River, Alaska

Denali Park, Alaska

Monterey, California

Brisbane, California

Idaho Falls, Idaho

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Shelby, Montana

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Maine

The New York coast along the Great Lakes

Tehachapi Pass

Washington (the state)

New Orleans

Boulder, Colorado

Vermont in the fall

Coldfoot, Alaska (home of the best burgers in the US)

To name a few.

Worcester, Vermont, the place I grew up.

Boston, nowhere else in the US is there so much history in one place.

Popham Beach, Maine, just a spectacular cresent shaped bay with a rocky island that you can walk out to at low tide.

Any place with mountains and snow!

In no particular order:

Dauphin Island, Alabama-beaches, beaches, and quiet beaches.

Key West, Florida-not so quiet beaches and just the drive
there is wonderful.

Asheville, North Carolina-those mountains, and the Biltmore.

and lucky me-I get to live in one of my favorite places, here in New Orleans.

but unlucky me-I have yet to travel anywhere out of the USA; so someday I hope I can add a whole bunch of other, exotic foreign lands to this list.

NOLA-LADY

I haven't done much travelling yet. I'm so jealous of those of you with such exotic, worldwide lists! Here are a few from my narrow strip of existence:

1. Quebec City - I adore the old section with its narrow streets and quaint cafes, where the majestic Chateau Frontnac can be seen from just about anywhere.

2. Ottawa, Ontario - I lived there for two years, and it's an all around beautiful city. Special points of interest: the parliament buildings (of course), Sparks Street, the Byward Market, skating on the Rideau Canal.

3. Georgian Bay, also in ON - This is a great area for camping, hiking, etc. I swam at a beach there that was like a swimming pool with such amazingly clear (cold!) water and slabs of rock for a bottom.

4. Port Burwell, ON - Charming little town with a gorgeous beach. Popular spot for summer cottagers.

Hard to chose, I think I like all of the following equally

Marbella, Spain, the Costa del Sol, great people, beautiful women, great beaches-

South Beach, Miami, Fl, beautiful women, great beaches, great weather unless there's a hurricane-

Key West, Duval St, something about that strange little island, a lot of beautiful women there also, damn good fishing-

New Orleans, the French Quarter, nuff said-

London, love everything about that great town-

Athens, Greece, beautiful city, beautiful women, great history-

Boston, Cape Cod, great food, historical places-

Long Island, the Hamptons, absolutely great-

Seattle, clean, crisp, wet, great food, beautiful women-

Any of the Greek islands, I love to travel--

I couldn't get into this thread last night, so here goes this morning.

1. London-The most alive and fascinating city I've ever been to. Something about that place just speaks to my soul. Yeah, I know, it's silly.

2. Venice-Beautiful. All those crumbling and rotting buildings, fantastic history. Yummy.

3.Athens-Beautiful, warm, and all those old buildings.

4. Cambria, Ca.-Lovely little town on the coast.

That's all I can think of right now.
