we've got threads about our favorite comfort foods, our favorite fast foods, our favorite desserts, all sorts of less-than-healthy foods. i know some litizens have health concerns that make them need to worry about their diet, others want to lose weight and some just want to eat healthier (i think i fit into all three of those categories). i thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people talked about their favorite healthy foods. i'm always looking for good ideas and now that i'm back in california i can actually afford fresh produce.

please post your favorite healthy foods, recipies, tips, whatever :)

Oranges.
I love rye crackers with just a thin slice of cheese to, dont now if thats healty but its yummy.

my hippy cousin used to own a health food store in Jersey City (talk about contrarian). He sold a lot of bee pollen. I didn't think much of it, but I do remember a tee shirt that said, "Bee Healthy: Eat Your Honey." Might have been something funny there.

I just wanted to (hijack) and say hey to Lexicon...how's California treating you?

*humming Joni Mitchell*

Me too. I can't eat too much soy because it affects how the body absorbs a thyroid supplement (weird, huh?), but every so often is good. I like it in pad thai because it absorbs all the spicy sauce. Yummy!

It's like an invasion of the kitties around here...

Fresh Crab
Raw Oysters
Poached Salmon
Cous Cous
Polenta
Pears, Strawberrys and watermelon
Green Veggies
Wild Greens

Well I just love !

* carrots

* avocado with corn tortillas

* apples

* and Deyer's fruit pops .. they are frozen taste delicious and have no sugar which is good for you. :)

Two words

fruit leather.

Also, since I am lactos intollerant (I know I spelled something wrong there), any soy based product!

Also ^_^ You can add applesause to any baked good (like cookies) and almost cut out all of the fat and colosterol. Use the Applesause rather than oil.

Healthy tips:

- Use salsa instead of creamy dips.

- Egg Beaters taste as good as eggs in omelets, and have all the protein without the fat & cholesterol.

- Keep dried fruit & nuts by your computer instead of candy. For those who love sweets, dried canteloupe is really really good!

- Water, water, water! Drink lots.

- Replace your morning coffee with green tea. It brings you up without edginess, helps prevent cancer, and tastes great. But don't get those crappy Lipton bags - buy the loose leaf stuff at someplace like Adagio. In addition to a huge selection of great tea and tea pots, they sell cool little one-person strainers that make preparing loose leaf tea as easy as making coffee.

- Use ground turkey instead of ground beef.

If you're interested in a real slap-yo-mama Louisiana-style recipe for 'em, let me know.

I'm interested. But don't slap my mama. Only I can slap my mama.

Mmmmm Hummus and fresh pita.
Pears (which I now slice and keep at the puter with me)
Carrots~the lil baby ones just perfect munchy size
And I LOVE Tofu Pups. I used to eat them when I was veggie and it is one of the foods I just kept in my diet. I love em with tons of mustard and onions.

I could go on but Im getting hungry:D

My very first thought on this subject was, "If it's healthy, it ain't food!"

There really isn't anything as "healthy foods," only a "healty diet" or "good eating habits."

Eat whatever you like, but eat it in moderation and cultivate a taste for a wide variety of foods so that your overall diet is "healthy."

I personally think that most foods available today are over processed. The closer you can get to a food's original form, the better it is for you -- preservatives protect foods but aren't good for the consumer.

I think it actually tastes better, and this from a girl who grew up on a dairy farm where beef was as plentiful as air!

Most ground turkey is not superior to lean beef, fat or calorie-wise. And as far as taste goes, blech.

I'm a big fan of all in one meals like steak salads--low in calories, high in nutrition, and high in protein.

I make the most kickass turkey chili in the history of the world.

I use the leanest turkey...cause a year ago I stopped eating things on four legs, cause it reminded me of my dog.

Funny thing, my dog would kill to eat anything on four legs.

I also make damn fine refried beans using only water, no oil.

Avocado on whole wheat bread with lettuce, tomatoes and watercress (I add a little salt as well).

Strawberries, apples, oranges, bananas...

A tablespoon of fat-free Cool Whip in between two halves of a low-fat chocolate graham cracker. Put it in the freezer and it takes like an ice cream sandwich- yummy!

Greek salad- romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, stuffed grape leaves, red onions, carrots, cucumbers, feta cheese, and some balsamic vinagrette dressing.

A good old turkey sandwich, except use fat-free mayo and whole wheat or pita bread.

I personally think lean turkey is much tastier than equivalently lean beef, but that's a preference thing.

A simple fruit salad: get a bunch of summer fruits, cut em up, add chopped fresh mint. Let sit in for 10 minutes or so. Yumm....

Grow your own tomatoes. Don't refrigerate them - it kills the flavor. Chop em up with some cucumbers, fresh basil, and red onion. Toss with vinagrette or Italian dressing. Eat.

Personally, I'm more fond of bipeds (people included).
