The problem with a color like red, it can be either warm or cool. I can't wear a warm "tomato" red, but a "claret" red is perfect.
Men are also more likely to be colorblind than women and therefore less likely to detect tonal subtlies. (This of course is not meant as a flame. My store carries men's and women's clothing and generally speaking, most men cannot coordinate colors. There are exceptions.
