I think the best ones I've read and seen thus far would be The Da Vinc Code and The Hunger Games films. I have been mostly disappointed by other adaptations. The film Angels and Demons which was the companion to The Da Vinci Code fell short for me even though Ron Howard helmed both films who I think is a brilliant director. What are other peoples thoughts on here?

TKaM, not because they did everything exactly as it happened in the book, but because the actors and filmmakers captured the essence of it. Probably will always be my top choice.

I agree with you. The book was brilliant and even though the film did omit some key scenes and characters in their adaptation it was also brilliant. It did as you say capture the spirit of the book and its message.

Where the Red Fern Grows was done well. Little Women (with Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, et al) is watered down, but still very good. Girl, Interrupted was okay. I tend to hate the film adaptations of novels.

OP, while the Hunger Games missed a few marks, Catching Fire was great.

I agree that Catching Fire was the superior film to the first one. It is somewhat surprising as Suzanne Collins who wrote the books co-wrote the screenplay on the first film.

Silence of the Lambs was virtually identical to the book and it was a great book.

Not quite a book, or a single movie. But both The Body and Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption were made into phenomenal movies that surpassed the stories.

I agree with Silence of the Lambs and the harry Potter series, but.....

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower was so amazingly true to the book. Even in the visuals. The scenes of the movie looked exactly how you'd imagine they would. Granted it was just a bunch of kids hanging out listening to music, but they still did an awesome job with that one.

The first sin city was spot on to the comic. Havent seen the second yet. If we include tv shows game of thrones is pretty close to the books

Next to Casablanca Shawshank is one of my all time favorite films. The novella it was based on was real good too. The fact that the printed story was relatively short I think less than 100 pages meant that the film not only included all of the best elements of the book but expanded upon them.

you mean except for all the details they changed and the scenes they left out?

So many good responses. All really well done book to film adaptations. The film for Silver Linings Playbook did re-imagine some elements of the novel but was still quite good.

This is so easy, Godfather I and Godfather II.

It wasn't that short. But the film was still better developed than the story. Which was great in and of itself.

Stand By Me, AKA The Body was also a really well done movie based on a story from the same book.

Stephen King had a few.

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
Stand by Me
The Green Mile

All short stories, but great movies.

Cracks - a completely twisted story but I enjoyed the movie.

I haven't heard of either. *Googles*

*edit* looks really good, I can see why you'd like it. I relate to the basic analysis of Fiamma, if I look back at my last 2 years of high school.
