An SF movie can also be an action movie; but only if it has a hero/heroine kicking ass up close and personal on the ground -- not just shooting, either, but punching and kicking. War movies are different. Top Gun is not an action movie. Star Wars is not an action movie. Resident Evil, Time Cop, Predator, are action movies.

T1 and Alien were both better than the sequels.

They were better movies but not better action movies. Although I think a case might be made for T1 as a superior action movie to T2, I still think the sequel was better in those terms. I really don't think there is any doubt over Aliens being superior to Alien in terms of action. It's relentless whereas Alien was a slow burn.

Aliens is an action movie. Alien is a horror movie.

I may be a touch out of the 'Alien' loop, but Ridley Scott's prequel, Prometheus, to Alien is to be released on June 8th.

Knowing Ridley Scott directed 'Prometheus', may be the singular reason for me to see it in theaters before it goes to DVD.

While I agree that T1 was better than its sequels, Aliens in my opinion was much more thrilling and of course, the special effects were better.

I am not certain what my favorite action movie is. I like so many of them.

Overall, I would say any of the Indiana Jones series. Throw in sci-fi, then I would say 'Star Wars' (I know that goes against my loyalty to anything 'Star Trek'). Alien is different somehow. Super hero type thing? Then I go with 'Iron Man' .
