I remember seeing the skinny gourd people in a documentary once. When asked about the gourds, the men said they were for modesty only, and would feel naked without them.

I, personally, think there is a little bit more going on there...

It's pretty amusing to see them dance with the gourds on. Often, they will tie the end to a piece of string around their waist as a kind of makeshift supporter.

Seems pretty alien, now, but I spent some time there when I was a kid.
