British novelist David Lodge died last Wednesday. His works were inevitably competent, engaging, and frequently hilarious. He mocked university life, most notably in a series that became known as 'The Campus Trilogy,' satires on the Kafkaesque aspects of higher education and its denizens, as well as the differences between US and UK customs. (He had two faculty members swap homes during a sabbatical with amusing results, his Morris Zapp character particularly memorable. UC Berkeley stood in as 'Euphoria State University.')
At one point two faculty members are considering an intimate liaison, but only finally agree if each promises never to 'write about it.'
A wonderful author, polished, adept, a consummate story-teller. He will be missed.
