Just got back from shopping. The supply ship is two days late and still no sign of it, (it comes monthly). Wannahockalugee Island has been slowly running out of...well, everything. I've attached photos of the "produce department" of the nicest store on the island. I would have photographed the other stores but there was nothing to photograph. Anyway, I was kind of tickled and thought, if nothing else, it might make everyone feel just a little better about their lives.

And for the American Litsters, there is a photo of a bumper sticker that has been proudly displayed at our video store for a long time. The world is watching, my friends.

Ka kite,

Tell me about it. Generally, I don't think you should be able to bend carrots until the tip touches the base. I could be wrong.

Well, they have been in that cooler for over a month, the little troopers.

Funny, I'm such an optimist. I still scooter my way to the store believing that maybe, just maybe, some new food will be there. (It never is).

Now maybe everyone can understand why I get so cranky around discussions of gourmet meals.

It must be tough to achieve penetration with a carrot that sad.

Do you at least have good locally grown fruits?

Hey, I may be way off base here but I may have a suggestion....

There are these "green bags" that makes my fruit & vege last twice as long no matter if I keep it in the fridge or on the counter top.

Here they are.

I realize you can't just pop down to Safeway & buy them yourself but I thought maybe occasionally you had family somewhere that sent you non-perishable hard to get things.

And beside that, who needs vege when you are getting so much more Vit D from the sun than I am!

Well, a bendable carrot could come in handy for...

Yes, we do have some local fruits and veggies. Some. And seasonal. Mostly cabbage, cukes and and taro root (yuck). In the winter we get tomatoes. Papaya are available year round, as are bananas. Currently, starfruit are in season (yum!). It is the lack of variety, I must say, that really gets to me but I've learned, for the most part, to just live with it and appreciate those few little extras that come now and then.

One month we got celery! Hooray!

Good idea about the veg bags.

I'm a veggie lover. I knew I'd be making a sacrifice to come here. Some days the vitamin D is worth it and some days I'd trade it all for asparagus.

Going back to civilization for a visit was hilarious. I broke into a fit of giggles in the middle of the grocery store. SO much selection!!!! How does anyone decide what to buy?

I've had taro root sliced thin and cooked like potato chips/crisps. They were dead tasty.

I can imagine that the lack of variety would suck. Can you get decent multi-vitamins?

*Takes a moment to roll around on the floor laughing*

Dude, I can't buy a toaster here.

But seriously, no. I eat canned and frozen fruits and veggies, (as much as I hate it), whenever I can't get the real stuff. And I have a friend from NZ who sends me a liquid iron supplement, as I'm borderline anemic.

On the plus side, local produce is sun-ripened. This island has spoiled me for "gassed" grocery store bananas forever, not to mention the vine-ripened tomatoes. Real tomatoes, as it turns out, do not taste like cardboard. Who knew?

The locals boil their taro and I'm a lousy/lazy cook so I just pass on the whole taro thing. Too starchy, anyway. The leaves of the taro plant, however, are delicious. Not much to look at, kind of like spinach that's already been digested once, but very nice with coconut cream.

Well, with your fruit selection I'd guess you do okay for vitamins. Probably lacking in some minerals though (iron obviously). What about ordering some vitamins bulk? Or is mail service that bad?

Postal system is hit and miss. One of my letters to Canada took eight months to arrive, (there’s no courier services here). Also very $$$$.

Amazon is fairly reliable and they’ll replace an order if it’s ridiculously late. Haven’t tried many other suppliers of “stuff”. (Well, except for Good Vibes but that’s a necessity, not a luxury).

Only six months left, I’ll just tough it out.

And, hey, the supply ship just came in! There should be new stock on the shelves by Tuesday or Wednesday. *Does happy dance*
