Family Reunion After The Pulse

The year is 2015, and after years of chaos, civil war, and economic depression following the Great Pulse of February 14, 2010, the former United States of America has largely stabilized into a number of mutually recognized nations. The West is a loose collection of sovereign states and Native American tribes that respect each other's borders scrupulously by now.

The East, however, is a rump USA dominated by the Republican Front, a ruling party/militia that has shifted from war to using peaceful means to persuade the rest of the states to return to the Union. There is no question that peace and prosperity have been restored under the leadership of the Front's Chairman/Commandant, Col. Simon Lomax, a former Marine Recon officer.

Civil liberties are mostly respected, too, but the reinstitution of political freedom is taking longer. The Commandant wants to move incrementally in that way. Cynics say that he is consolidating his party's dominance over the institutions of the country first. Supporters say that he is just preparing the country for a return to liberal democracy and working on a practical Constitution after the Revolution has been completed. He is also establishing diplomatic ties with his neighbors.

One part of the Front's jurisdiction that is never expected to receive Constitutional protections in the post-Pulse generation is the District of Columbia Penal Colony, where Communists, fundamentalists, separatists, and anyone else who violently resisted the Republican Front's march across the Eastern USA are worked to exhaustion and starvation under the sweat of a humid heat in which the Pulse has destroyed the capacity for even low-tech air-conditioning. While the rest of the population enjoys more personal freedom and prosperity, as well as the other fruits of victory and national unity, the inmates of DC are presumably under a life sentence of exile and hard labor. Half of them probably wish that they had been executed by firing squads, like the top leaders of the various rival regimes and others deemed too dangerous to spare the death penalty.

It is in this environment that a family reunion is planned, and one of the people attending it is Charles Forrester, a young man who wants to see his Aunt Claire in California again. Charles spent the past 5 years in Ohio (between college and a short term in the state militia fighting fundamentalist rebels), but looks forward to a trip to the now independent Republic of California and a possible rekindling of his incestuous relationship with his now 41 year old bachelorette aunt and her girlfriend. The last time he saw them, he was 18 and they seduced the innocent young man. He's now older, but his breakup with his college sweetheart has put him in the mood to see them again and find out what has happened to them in San Francisco.

It was very handy that after 5 years, it was his aunt's turn to host the reunion again. There hadn't a reunion in all of that time and both of his uncles and parents were dead now. The family was a bit smaller, but he still had his cousins, none of whom interested him like his aunt. It would be a matter of finding out how she felt about him now. He'd left before and tried to be "normal" with a straight, regular girlfriend who wanted marriage and monogamy. It started well, but didn't work out in the long run or make him half as happy as his wild, free-loving, bisexual aunt, the "black sheep" of the family and her equally lecherous lover.

Needing primarily the aunt, but her girlfriend would be a nice bonus.
