Falling Off The Main Page

On the plus side, the story got published😎 the truth is: it won’t stay on the page long enough to get as many readers checking it out.... bummer. But, hey, it was published🌹

Lower trafficked categories have the advantage of a story staying on the page longer

When I write non-contest stories in less popular categories they can fail to get the minimum ten votes. They rarely get comments. They are posted, are on the overall new list front page for a few hours, and are then effectively invisible..

Huh? That doesn't follow. The less popular categories hold stories on their front pages longer. I'm talking about the Category front pages, because surely that's where people go to find new stories?

For example, Mature right now has got two weeks worth of stories, Transexual & Crossedressers six days worth. GM has got three days worth, Non-Con four days. I didn't look at LW, coz it's got a whole 'nother dynamic if its own.

The only category that I can see with a day's churn is I&T - only five stories on the front page have a Red H, and overall scores (from a quick look) seem to be around 3:80 - 4:20. I don't know what's normal there, but on face value it seems to be a saturated market full of the ordinary, with a smattering of proven names.

They might be on the front page of an unpopular category for longer but that doesn't mean they get views or votes.

A few examples from my long list:

Category: How To - 4 votes in 5 years
Category: How To - 21 votes in 10 years
Category: Fetish - 17 votes in 2 years
Category: Fetish - 14 votes in 5 years
Category: Novels and Novellas - 24 votes in 2 years
Category: Reviews and Essays - 9 votes in 12 years (and that was a contest entry!)
Category: Sci-Fi and Fantasy - 8 votes in 13 years
Category: Sci-Fi and Fantasy - 3 votes in 7 years

As for Poetry, particularly Non-Erotic:

7 votes in 15 years

Erotic Poetry:

3 votes in 12 years.

Ah, I see, your point re views and votes. You inhabit a very specialised niche, Ogg, a very specialised niche indeed.

It's like you're writing for the third puffin over there by the sixth rock, when everyone else is an emperor penguin in the Antarctic, where there's tens of thousands of the bastards. And they're all the same. At least your bird is one of a kind!

Did you say ""Puffin"?

Yup. Ogg is specialised, he has a uniquely small reader base, but he's an original.

Whereas the thousands who write in, say I&T, are mostly interchangeable, like those penguins.

I've just been compared to a flightless waterfowl by an Aussie porn writer. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

As I consider his writing to be damned good, I tend to read some of his stories.
"Men at Arms" is a damned good little tale.
"Christmas Truce" was a prize-winner, I believe.
:)

Put on the penguin suit and stand proud, along with your mates. The challenge is to be the tallest penguin, so stand on the rock over there ---------->

You know you're a shameless views whore, Simon, so you just gotta roll with the punches (flipper flaps...?) :)

Thank you. I have temporarily added part of this post to my signature. :D

A pleasure to be of service, Ogg. A significant part of your charm is the dedication to your cause and having a set of principles to stick to.

That works! Done.

Whereas you, oh shameless singular one, who debases every one of your principles (if you ever had any) and would sell your own grandmother to get one more view; well...

...mate, how's your mom? ;)

In the words of the old Skyhooks' song, "You only like her coz she's good in bed."

Carry on!

Hey, leave mom out of it!

The world of Lit and the real world are two completely different realms, never to meet. That's my creed, and I'm sticking with it.

I'm quite content with my Lit artistic principles at the moment, and I strive to write consistently with every one of them. Time will tell if I do. :)

He said, protesting far too loudly, hoping it sounded convincing. It wasn't.

Simon remembered the day he turned eighteen. It was a hot summer day, and a swim in the backyard pool seemed like the perfect thing. His mom thought so too, and there was Janey, his older sister.

It was the perfect thing, twice. Simon couldn't wait to tell his brother.

"No, no," his mom and sis screamed. "That will kill the scores, never do that!"

Simon tore out the page, and started again...

You're a twisted man. But that's to be expected from someone who scribbles dirty stories in a part of the world where the toilet water spins the wrong way.

Just then, Dad's car pulled up in the drive. Janey got a dreamy look in her eye. Simon glanced at his mom. She smiled....
