Falkirk Wheel

It looks cool and imposing, but...but...but...why?

How does this make embarking/disembarking from a boat more efficient? I know it can't turn that fast to expedite a volume of passengers.

It carries boats from one canal to another at a different level.

It's more efficient than a set of locks.

AHHHHH. I didn't know about the canal aspect. It looked like a Rube Goldberg-ish elevator for boats.

That's exactly what it is. Just like canal locks are "elevators" for boats. This just does it much faster and in far less distance. Locks are like stairs.

In Scotland they call their lakes "lochs". What word do they use for "locks"?

A ship sailing through your back yard

The Soo Locks are a set of parallel locks which enable ships to travel
between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. They are located on
the St. Marys River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, between the
Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan and the Canadian province of
Ontario. They bypass the rapids of the river, where the water falls 21 feet (7 m).

Corinth Canal, Greece

The Corinthos Channel (Corinth Canal) connects the Gulf of Corinth
with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of
Corinth. It is 6.4km (4 mi) in length & only 21.4m (70 ft) wide at its base, making
it impassable for most modern ships. Constructed from 1881 to 1893, it now has
little economic importance & is used mainly for tourist traffic.
