The promised falcon photo's. These were shot in Central Park toward late afternoon. I'm 95% certain it's a Peregrin. I heard a sudden whoosh an clamour as pigeons and small birds took to the air and the falcon landed in the tree about fifty metres in front of me with his supper. The other bird is a pigeon so you can get some idea of scale.

I walked down the path and got within about thirty feet to take these pictures. The falcon was sat, nicely exposed, on a big branch. As you can imagine, a crowd quickly gathered.

The amazing thing is the falcon was being 'dive bombed' by other smaller birds. I don't think they wanted his catch, just t try to scare him away.

From the apartment where we were staying, I could watch them in the early morning testing the thermal currents over Central Park, that's the first picture. The second one is the only shot I got of one swooping over the park, it's almost dead centre, the other white dots are various birds getting out of the way.

And i can't resist adding another couple of sunrise and sunset shots. The first is dawn reflected off windows onto the Central Park lake, the second is... sunset.

oooh wow!

I remember once seeing a sparrow hawk swoop down on a bird in my back garden, I was about 12 at the time I think. He sat in the middle of the lawn eating the poor little bird he'd captured then flew off. All that was left was a few feathers! It wasamazing to watch. I adore birds of prey.

Lovely pix, Neon.
I also think that's a peregrine falcon. One of the rock dove's (= town pigeon's) only natural enemies. I've long wanted them introduced into London.

Thank's EL and Dr S.

Huge slice of luck involved in getting those. I'd been watching them circling from the apartment balcony, four was the most I saw riding the thermals and of course they were too far away to get any decent shots. I'd been for a wander in Central Park and there were couple of guys with big camera's down by the small lake, they told me the Peregrins often swooped across the lake in the late afternoon and I hung around for a while then caught this one with his/her catch on the way back to the apartment. ;) I ought post them to a website, other photos of Peregrins on 'the net' are quite poor.

Oooh! Amazing pictures, neon!

Thank you for posting them! :rose:

(And the sunset pics - lovely!)

We haven't seen our falcon around lately, but all the birds at the feeder scatter regularly so we think he's hunting in the area still.

Lovely, thanks for posting. Hope you take and post pics of the wedding cake too. :)

Outstanding. Good fortune is wasted on the unprepared; you have every right to pride in these.

Gorgeous pics, neon. :)

Redtailed Hawks are as common around here as pigeons are elsewhere. I hear them daily, but they won't sit still for a picture.
