“Faces of the Fallen is about love and relationships, courage and sacrifice. It is also about the vision of artists and the power of art to bring us together in sorrow, compassion and respect.”

- Annette Polan, Artist and Founder/Chair

Sponsored by the Washington Post with supplemental funding by corporate and individual donors, this is an artist-interpreted version of the Post's four-year-old Faces of the Fallen website (today's total: 3,558).

226 artists have created 1,319 portraits and a collective portrait ("Representative Soldier"), which are displayed with the soldier's name, rank, age, date of death, and hometown.

This is presented in a slideshow format, with music. Have tissues on hand. It's heartbreaking.

Very moving...now I want someone to tell me why the invasion of Iraq was worth the loss of these people...

Because of the "War on Terror", Drk. If we don't stop them in Iraq they will be blowing up some gas station in Podunk, Missouri by next week.

Or so, I'm told by the White House.

I try to look without thinking of that. If there's anything positive to be said here, it's that we seem to have learned just one lesson from Vietnam: 'hate the war, honor the warrior.' We learned precious little else. But at least it's something.

Unfortunately, even that lesson was forgotten in the wake of 9/11 as orchestrated by a meglomaniac president who sees his V.N. era experiences in the Arkensas and Texas National Guard as heroic.

It's sad that history will look back at this and say, "3000 people were killed on 9/11. That wasn't good enough, so GWB had to double the score out of egotism."

I'm glad Shereads is right.

I wish Jenny wasn't.

Being right can really suck! There's a lot to be said for blissful ignorance.
