has anyone seen this film ... its really amazing ... one of my fav coming of age films but also its about a girl/girl relationship

i believe its called "Show Me Love" me USA and canada ... its a swedish film

thanks effigy ... i've got a few films mentally stored that seXieleXie recommended too but its pretty hard to find them ... i'll keep an eye out for that one too :)

i think i posted with you about this before, so i'll just say i reccomend this film as well!:D

ok, one more thing; it reminded me a bit of -the indredibly true adventures of two girls in love-. though in amal, i think they were in middle school? i guess because of the way that they both do represent coming of age and coming out so well as you said.

have you ever seen -all over me-?

oh, and, i liked -but i'm a cheerleader!- too, but it is more of a twisted comedy slash love story, and i don't think it is as obscure as amal.

I recently saw a movie which was made in the early 90s. Its called "If Walls Could Talk" . It comprises of three stories spanning three decades ie the 60s to the 80s. Do see it if you can lay your hands on it in your nearby video store.

Sexyg you may have seen another movie called "sexing The Cherry" which is based on a story by Jeanette Winterson one of the most prolific lesbian writers in the UK . Another must see.:)

Rubymyst, I believe the full title is "If These Walls Could Talk". If I recall correctly it was originally shown on HBO.

Another film of interest in this area is John Sayle's Lianna, about a married woman who falls in love with her female college professor. It came out in the early '80s.

quite right setti..in 2 parts as well?

One part is about lesbians, the other is about women dealing with the issue of abortion. I don't remember which is which.

I have seen Fucking Åmål, But I'm a Cheerleader, Chutney Popcorn, The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love, etc.

Fucking Åmål was pretty cute. The girls are awfully young.
But I'm a Cheerleader really didn't do a whole lot for me...except for Clea Duvall. Yummy.
Chutney Popcorn has great, funny scenes of turkey baster home insemination. (Oops, dropped it on the floor!)
The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love is cute too, but a lot of reviewers found it overly sappy.

Oh man, there are so many more lesbian-themed movies I've seen and want to see, but I really really really have to get back to work! I'll post more later on.

I saw Fucking Åmål when it came out some years ago.
I thought it was pretty good.

I loved this movie, US title was indeed "Show me Love" I really liked how even the unsympathetic characters are sympathetic, how they're all just kids trying to make sense of stuff...it's a very generous movie that way, and a feel-good that lets you actually feel good.

Bend it Like Beckham....not lesbian themed but really good flick about girls, also lets you feel good without feeling guilty.

Bend it Like Beckham has nothing to do with lesbianism unless you took the hyperstrung mother's paranoia seriously.
Its more about an Indian woman's desire to make it in the "white world"

Like I said, it has nothing to do with lesbianism.

Yes, it has to do with an Indian Girl's aspirations and dreams and making it both in a white world and navigating her own culture in a way that works for her.

We are both on the same page.

It's also got some very positive things about girls, sports, independence and coming of age, and in that scope reminded me somewhat of the other film. And it was good.

I'll curb my free associating brain better in the future.

i dont think they are as good as, like - paris is burning- or henry and june, but they moved me just the same. i'm sure the crirics slaughtered go fish, but i still love that as well. :)

oh, and chloe sevigny (sp) rocked in -if these walls could talk-!

netzach, i liked your free associating! i may just see that film now, thanks! i usually tune out as soon as sports are mentioned, but that sounds like it goes way beyond, i probably shouldn't brush it off.

hmm maybe we need a new movie thread. sorry for rambling s-g!

I downloaded it from KaZaA, but it didn't have English sub-titles ... so I didn't watch it.

That movie was pure colonial shite! It's funny how there are comparitively so few movies about little blonde girls who "come of age" by throwing themselves at Indian boys.

But it was *better* colonial shite than the big fat Greek Wedding thing, Jesus.

But I don't have to be 100% politically down with something to like it. Never have never will be.

Hell, I even love Hanif Kureshi.

I believe the girls in Fucking Åmål are 15 or 16. 15 is the legal age for having sex in Sweden. I didn't see the movie myself, only short commercial clips for it, and that was enough to keep me far, far away from the movie in question. I mean, not only did the kids talk weird (not like normal teenagers), but also one of them uttered the sentence "I'm going to become celibacy", and that convinced me that I would shudder less from staying one and a half hour in a freezer.

haha. I've actually teased girls I've dated that I'm so close to swearing celibacy at a convent somewhere! So ugh, it does come into normal everyday conversation.

The film is really cute & adorable. I really like the blonde character, although I really don't go for blondes & usually go for dark-haired girls. Her character is an exception though.

It's probably a really great film for teens & especially those just coming out & figuring out themselves.

Agh! I miss this movie! Love the endig theme song! :rose:

I really used to just get annoyed with movies that were so mainly about gay love. I started off liking girls sexually before ever thinking about them romantically, so I kind of was able to ease into being bisexual through rationalization. Coming of age gay movies just don't do anything for me.

To the people that mentioned "But I'm a Cheerleader", I loved this movie. I just found it hilarious at the time, but one of my friends liked it too much, so I got tired of it.

agh hehe. My friend loved this movie called, "Love & Basketball!" When I finally went to watch it w/ her, I was really disappointed. Actually, I end up not liking any of the movies she hypes up at me beforehand. Don't know why that is really. Maybe it's b/c I start to have overly high expectations for the movie before even watching it.

"But I'm a Cheerleader" is definitely a cute movie. That was actually the first lesbian movie I saw with a happy ending! So it was such a relief for me to watch something like that!

The most recent new ones I like are "Saving Face" & "DEBS." I'm looking forward to watching "Loving Annabelle." Oh, I also heard from a friend that "Imagine Me & You" was a good movie, but for some reason, I'm not too enthusiastic about watching that one, eh.

:rose:

hmmmm I love when people are using letters like Å Æ and Ø :)

now I think it is just time some people learned how to pronounce them. And well maybe I should see that great Swedish movie some time in the future :)

I think you're being too hard on it. I think that the kids in Fucking Åmål talks in a fairly normal way. Oh, and as for the "jag ska bli celibat"-comment, is it really that unusual for kids that age to have a grammatical error or two in their language use? In fact, when it comes to swedish (and international) movies about teenagers of that age, Fucking Åmål is one of the most realistic ones I've seen. It hits the mark spot on several times.
I'm sorry that you missed it because of some stray (and quite deliberate on the movie makers part) grammatical error that you saw in a trailer.

As for the other movies, the first If these walls could talk is a about women's rights in general, while the sequel If these walls could talk 2 is about lesbian women in particular. It has some pretty great actors like Vanessa Redgrave, Sharon Stone, Ellen Degeneres (err, ok...not really an actor), Paul Giamatti, Marian Seldes, Michelle Williams and Natasha Lyonne. Like its predecessor, it has three segments that each deals with a different time period. It's 1961, 1972 and 2000. Some of the segments are pretty hamhanded and/or cheesy. But the first one, 1961, is really, really great. It's worth seeing just because of that one.

Beyond that one, there aren't really that many good lesbian movies. The best you can hope for is a decent romantic comedy like Saving Face or Imagine me and you.
