Mrs. Racliff worked to straighten up some books as the clock on the library wall read 2:46. The final bell rang at 2:50. The library was sparsely inhabited, it being Thursday. There was a football game at 6. Over among the stacks, five students from one class were looking up material on the Roman Empire for their senior project. Elsewhere, about four others were studying.
Two were talking, more loudly than they should be in the library. The librarian was about to say something, but the minute hand on the clock advanced to 47 past the hour. Fuck it, she thought. Her sister had told her she took her career too seriously, and Rhonda Racliff had begun to think her sibling was right.
Among the students seated in the room was Mark Jacobs. When the librarian saw him, he remembered he was slated to help her in the back room for half an hour after school. It was for extra credit in his Student Aide class. Bullshit class, he figured, but with the extra credit his "A" was damn near a shoo-in. He worked to clear out his math homework as the clock ticked off another minute...
