Boston University scientists were today condemned for 'playing with fire' after it emerged they had created a lethal new Covid strain in a laboratory.

DailyMail.com revealed the team had made a hybrid virus — combining Omicron and the original Wuhan strain — that killed 80 per cent of mice in a study.

The revelation exposes how dangerous virus manipulation research continues to go on even in the US, despite fears similar practices may have started the pandemic.

Daily Mail= Brietbart for the middle classes.
Stupid assed scientists create super efficient extinction virus right after a pandemic of the SAME virus, and all you can do is deride the source of the information?

The fucking idiots in the right wing media that are spreading this bullshit should be jailed.....people who don't understand virology have no business interpreting virology for the public.

"It's not like they made this monster virus. That is a complete misinterpretation," Dr. Kuritzkes explained. Also, "what we see in animal models does not directly translate to what happens in humans," he added.

The director of the NEIDL lab released a statement in response to the reports, calling them false and inaccurate. "They've sensationalized the message, they misrepresent the study and its goals in its entirety," says Ronald B. Corley, NEIDL director and BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine chair of microbiology, of the news reports.

A nice shortcut for the majority among us who are not scientists is to look at the identities of those who are promoting certain narratives to gauge whether or not there's anything to them. When I saw this story getting the screaming hysteria treatment from the finest epidemiologists on TikTok and assorted vaccine deniers, I assumed it was safe to ignore and moved on to important stuff like what the Kardashians had for lunch.

Cutting edge science often presents moral dilemmas. On the one hand there can be great value to experimenting and testing with dangerous substances, on the other it can be playing with fire.

The cautionary principal would be a good standard but seeking profitable breakthroughs and notoriety for the research are motivation to push the limits of safety.

Fucking 80% mortality ? The scariest thing to me is that there are people out there who think it would be good to let this kind of cat out of the bag.

This hybrid virus is based on an original COVID variant that was identified in Washington state soon after the pandemic first emerged in 2020.

The main focus of the research was to see if the spike protein in Omicron causes less severe disease, with the hope that better COVID-19 diagnostic tests and treatments could be developed. What they found is that the lab-created hybrid virus killed eight of 10 infected mice, while the mice that were infected with natural Omicron got sick but didn’t die.
Despite killing so many of the lab mice, the hybrid virus used in this study was less lethal than the early variant, which was fatal in 100 percent of the mice studied. The authors claim that this suggests the mutations that make Omicron less pathogenic (or infectious) involve changes in some of the virus’ other proteins and not the spike protein.
The original Covid19 variant was 100% fatal to mice, Omicron was 0% fatal, and the hybrid was 80% fatal.

It's a good thing that a virus cannot escape from a lab...

Question: Does this lab have a food court?
