I live in a small town, so I pretty much know whose credentials are or aren't worth the paper they're written on. So I have to go with who I know.

Absolutely correct.
I lost count at how many times I tried to let my the results of my labor and experience speak for itself. Only to fail because I lacked the charm and persona to kiss someone's ass to make them like me. I have also lost count of how many times I witness someone else take credit for another persons' wonderful idea(s) or workmanship.
Also, dolf is tied for the lead thus far.
Over the years I have learned an important lesson when it comes to whether I will hire or not.
