In Bolivia, in the foot hills of the Andes, the headwaters of a tributary of the Amazon flows out of a high plateau. The topography yields a flora/fauna much like the temperate forests of the Pacific North West in Canada/US. However, the area is in habited by indigenous uncontacted people and therefore off limits to modern people. (Pilon National Park, Bolivia, FWIW). Devastated by disease, the natives contact civilization and become contacted. A university forms an expedition to the area, the first ever allowed.

They meet with the local shaman, who all but forbids their expedition, on the grounds that the spirits wouldn't like them. This is, however, lost in translation, as what he is trying to warn them is that the reason no one lives in there is that the pollen of a bush makes people exceptionally horny. It is fine to go alone, but in a group things get crazy. The expedition, being good westerners, brush off his spirit warning, make the appropriate donation to appease the gods and go on their semester in the forest. Sexy ensues.

Issues: 1. What is the composition of the University expedition group?
2. What are the actual effects of the pollen?
3. What happens when a bush is transplanted to the Pacific NW?

1. Survival experts would be a massive sensibility. At least one translator. Mixed group, ages can range from mid-20's to early 40's. Professor figures in such contexts are usually but not always distinctly older than the youngest party.

2. Saying it is a hormone-increasing pollen and then ignoring the fact that overdoses of hormones on the body are bad would be illogical. Ginseng is said to increase the libido, but only if taken daily for a long period of time - a derivative/concentrated mutation perhaps? Crocin in large doses - found in some flowers - is said to increase libido in male rats.

3. For the sake of the story, not going the route of people realising that pollen that makes people horny (but otherwise useless) is actually a bad thing and so locking it up to do scientific tests on it? But on the other hand, you *could* run with that, and then lead on to a secondary story where the pollen is used to make a new designer aphrodisiac for the super rich.

What the shaman said is that *some* prople can be affected by the pollen. In this case, the senior professor and a gifted junior (19 years old, skipped lots of HS) are the ones that the pollen hits. There of the guides also get the bug, and fun ensues when they try to hide the sexy.

When the research trip is done, the prof brings back several samples, for research purposes only (wink wink), and the campus of the University of Washington gets affected by the sexy pollen.

Will this spread and become an epidemic across the Puget Sound?

I like the story idea for the historical aspect. The history of western explorers going into South America to investigate indigenous tribes and disappearances of other western explorers makes for fascinating reading. It wouldn't be an unrealistic idea that a shaman would tell a story to either get rid of explorers, or to get something from them. :)

Since nobody else has mentioned this so far, not really at least. Most expeditions of scientists and so forth are predominantly men, maybe one or two women go along.

Course since this is a park that has not been explored there would would be a biologist, archaeologist perhaps, geologist, and an anthropologist. At least one of each perhaps more, it depends greatly on how good the funding is. There would be at least one guide, who is largely useless once they get to where they are going. Translators tend to be the very scientists coming along to look at the flora and fauna, though not always so perhaps one of those.

Out of all of that, perhaps one scientist and then maybe the guide along with translator are women. Not likely but possible, so if there are women along they increase the size to bring along men to be pack mules, those usually are locals. This is for an expedition done anywhere from the 60's until now, though add people the closer to 1960 you are.

Farther back, women on an expedition didn't really happen, some women did manage to make it as an archaeologist or so forth, but not very many. Good to know if you want to do mass gay orgies I suppose.

I think my initial idea is getting overwhelmed by history. I am not thinking old school explore the amazon.

First, Bolivia is not that big and is well populated. Pilon park is only a small part of Bolivia. Further, even though it is off-limits to explorers to keep the indigenous people uncontacted, we have plenty of overflight data. So this wouldn't be going into the great unknown, more like finally getting to catalog the flora and fauna of an uncataloged area. Further, the area is unpopulated, so no need for translators.

I was thinking the University would want to set up a recurring presence there as different groups rotate in to log the environment. Low threat, supplies depot only a day's hike away on the river, satellite uplinks.

So a group of 8, Head guy, several grad students, a few undergrads, 4 guys, 4 girls. First trip would be just to establish the lay of the land. They set up camp by a lake fed by a waterfall with crystal clear waters. Multi colored birds flit amongst the treetops. Lush beds of wild flowers, a paradise on earth. And every one is getting hornier and hornier, all the while trying to maintain normal "university group" behavior.

I have to say, I was suffering the worst hangover in a decade when I came up with this.

I haven't read the story, yet, but as an aside (or perhaps sequel seed or something) I have a dream scene in a jungle setting that could perhaps find home in outskirts of this or similar scenario.

...moderately athletic lean white (mousy dark blonde) girl wearing nothing but heavy all-over tan steer a large raft with shed like cabin on it out of the flow and to the jetty with practiced ease and tranquility of normalcy around her... with is disrupted when she notices the young man watching her from the campsite behind the pier. She quickly goes into the cabin, and return wearing a long shirt or similar one piece cover, behind an older, fully dressed man.

The older man greet the stranger, and establish he's not unexpected, even though arrived unannounced and perhaps earlier than thought. He introduces the young woman as his student (alternatively, and/or daughter), and after the introductions, he suggest that she may strip. What the girl does, with mix of visible physical relief and lingering wariness for being in front of the stranger, but she seems not to posses usual modesty, just gauging his reaction.

Between the two, they explain to the newcomer she haven't worn anything for months (perhaps, close to almost a year), ever since she's been stationed here to do an immersive study (of something... originally I thought the local tribe, their language, way of life, etc, but a fully foreign camp in uninhabited area doing botanical work or whatever else might be just as well). Most of it isn't news to the newcomer, in theory. Her fashion choice may be unexpected, but not necessarily illogical (say, the said local tribe is known to not practice clothing in western sense either).

For whatever reason he expects her to, eventually, not necessary right away, follow him back to city (the university campus, whatever), likely as part of a professional relationship, business, maybe even some kind of family stuff... but a sexual relationship may develop, quickly or not so, or quickly at the scene but with expectations to get over it one they go back out, in civilisation.

Implied development is, that she won't be going back to wearing clothes even upon returning -- or rather visiting -- in the city, as her true home is now here.

3. What happens when a bush is transplanted to the Pacific NW?

I would say, the bush is very decorative. And as speculated above, the effect might be slow and/or require significant concentrations. And the expedition may not realise its in any way connected to their behaviour anomalies (including, but not limited to Margaret, the girl from my above post, becoming staunch nudist).

Also as suggested, the effects might be uneven, and it might just be, it affects young women especially strongly. Part of the effect or not is the fact they absolutely adore the plant and it's flowers.

So, the bush is brought home, and distributed, becoming local garden fashion hit before its full properties are uncovered, and then downplayed or dismissed...

Ah, the question was what happens. Eventually the morality in the area morphs, not quite right away and not without resistance, of course... in the meantime there's lots of scandalous news.

You can incorporate indigenous people like the shaman and his tribe if you need a historical setting and female characters. I also recommend maybe adding a villain who wants the pollen for dark purposes but ends up thwarted. If you’re interested in a series meta plot.

While thinking it through and writing, I realized: they cannot find/isolate the bush. Because, even if you knew a bush was putting out wierd pollen, there would be no way to test that particular pollen is the thing doing it to you since you are all already 'under the influence'
